Download or read book Christian Initiation and Baptism in the Holy Spirit written by Kilian McDonnell (o.s.b.) and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up to now the teaching on the Baptism in the Holy Spirit has been based on a few scriptural texts whose interpretation was disputed. Now new evidence found in the post-Biblical authors demonstrates that what is called Baptism in the Holy Spirit was integral to Christian initiation. This means that Baptism in the Spirit does not belong to private piety but to public official liturgy and is normative.

Book Ablution Initiation and Baptism

Download or read book Ablution Initiation and Baptism written by David Hellholm and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 2089 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the web of cultural processes of late antiquity ablution rites and initiation rites were performed in different forms and in different contexts. Such rites existed in Early Judaism and Greco-Roman cults and were also applied in early Christianity under the label “baptism”, however, not as one fixed rite uniformly performed and interpreted. Baptismal rites developed diversely corresponding to the diversity among Christian groups of which some later came to be perceived as heretical. Remains of art, architecture and texts from these contexts were discussed in two conferences gathering scholars who are excellent within their respective fields: text studies, studies of rites, archaeology, architecture, history of art, and cultural anthropology. These different fields of research have in recent years generated new knowledge that is relevant for the discussion of ablution and initiation rites and their function in late antiquity. At the same time interests of research have altered in favour of a growing cooperation across discipline borders. The present volumes are the outcome of two conferences in Rome 2008 and at Metochi (Lesbos) 2009.

Book Dictionary of Paul and his letters

Download or read book Dictionary of Paul and his letters written by GERALD F HAWTHORNE and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 1815 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'Dictionary of Paul and his letters' is a one-of-a-kind reference work. Following the format of its highly successful companion volume, the 'Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels', this Dictionary is designed to bring students, teachers, ministers and laypeople abreast of the established conclusions and significant recent developments in Pauline scholarship. No other single reference work presents as much information focused exclusively on Pauline theology, literature, background and scholarship. In a field that recently has undergone significant shifts in perspective, the 'Dictionary of Paul and His Letters' offers a summa of Paul and Pauline studies. In-depth articles focus on individual theological themes (such as law, resurrection and Son of God), broad theological topics (such as Christology, eschatology and the death of Christ), methods of interpretation (such as rhetorical criticism and social-scientific approaches), background topics (such as apocalypticism, Hellenism and Qumran) and various other subjects specifically related to the scholarly study of Pauline theology and literature (such as early catholicism, the centre of Paul's theology, and Paul and his interpreters since F. C. Baur). Separate articles are also devoted to each of the Pauline letters, to hermeneutics and to preaching Paul today. The 'Dictionary of Paul and His Letters' takes its place alongside the 'Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels' in presenting the fruit of evangelical New Testament scholarship at the end of the twentieth century - committed to the authority of Scripture, utilising the best of critical methods, and maintaining dialogue with contemporary scholarship and challenges facing the church.

The second section deals with baptism in the Early Church, including essays on Jesus' blessing of the children, and baptism in the Epistle of Barnabas and in Gregory of Nyssa. It contains over 6,500 cross-referenced A-Z entries, and offers unrivalled coverage of all aspects of this vast and often complex subject, from theology; churches and denominations; patristic scholarship; and the bible; to the church calendar and its organization; popes; archbishops; other church leaders; saints; and mystics. In this new edition, great efforts have been made to increase and strengthen coverage of non-Anglican denominations (for example non-Western European Christianity), as well as broadening the focus on Christianity and the history of churches in areas beyond Western Europe. In particular, there have been extensive additions with regards to the Christian Church in Asia, Africa, Latin America, North America, and Australasia. Significant updates have also been included on topics such as liturgy, Canon Law, recent international developments, non-Anglican missionary activity, and the increasingly important area of moral and pastoral theology, among many others. Since its first appearance in 1957, the ODCC has established itself as an essential resource for ordinands, clergy, and members of religious orders, and an invaluable tool for academics, teachers, and students of church history and theology, as well as for the general reader.

Download or read book Spirit Baptism written by Harold D. Hunter and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1970s, Pentecostal seminarians who were fed a steady diet of the monographs by James D.G. Dunn and F. Dale Bruner were often co-opted by magisterial traditions. It was time for a new generation of Pentecostal scholars where Pentecostals could themselves address issues brought to the forefront of their movement. This volume became one of the first books of its kind to crest the new wave of an emerging Pentecostal scholarship. Contemporary Pentecostal pneumatology was often regarded as a historically contributed and artificial novelty from the modern period and scores of Pentecostals were persuaded to forsake their heritage. Spirit Baptism: A Pentecostal Alternative sought to ask the question if there was canonical evidence for a Charismatic dimension in the Christian pilgrimage. An answer in the affirmative inspired a scan of Christian figures through the centuries who have embraced this theological reality. The book ends with a theological synthesis that suggests an openness to various ways the Charismatic Spirit becomes a manifest reality in the lives of believers. Since the release of Spirit Baptism: A Pentecostal Alternative in 1983, much significant work has been accomplished in this field by Pentecostal and non-Pentecostal scholars alike. Yet this original groundbreaking work remains relevant as researchers around the world face for the first time theological issues that go to the heart of Pentecostal identify.

Book The Devil at Baptism

    Book Details:
  • Author : H.A. Kelly
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2004-01-30
  • ISBN : 1592445322

Download or read book The Devil at Baptism written by H.A. Kelly and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-01-30 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian baptismal ceremony was at first quite simple; by the beginning of the third century it included complex anti-demonic rites. Henry Ansgar Kelly here describes the evolution of the rites of baptism from New Testament times to the present day and explores the impact of demonological theories on Christian liturgy. Kelly begins by identifying the nature and origins of the evil spirits that are referred to in the New Testament, which proved to be major subjects of speculation and theological development by the Church Fathers. He then traces the history both of Christian demonology and of the initiation rituals, clearly illustrating their parallel evolution and their interaction. In his analysis, Kelly examines not only the direct expression of demonological theory in the original ceremonies but also the symbolic reinterpretation of theoretically untenable rituals into allegorical dramas. An astute and ambitious work, 'The Devil at Baptism' covers all the anti-demonic rites of the catechumenate and baptismal services and compares developments in East and West since the emergence of Christianity. It will be essential reading for anyone interested in the development of Christian liturgy in particular and in the history of religion in general.
