Book Greek and Roman Artillery

Download or read book Greek and Roman Artillery written by Eric William Marsden and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Defining a piece of artillery as a 'relatively complex engine powered by springs of resilient metal, composed of several mechanical devices, and designed to hurl bolts or shot over the longest possible range', Marsden presents a comprehensive account of the development and historical employment of ancient artillery from its invention in 399 BC to the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West (c. AD 400). Among the many topics raised are the influence of the introduction of artillery on warfare, the organization of artillery by states and monarchs, the obtaining of artificers and the training of artillery-men by ancient governments, and the effects of artillery on the design of fortifications. The work is based on the Greek and Latin texts describing the construction of catapults, ballistae and other machines translated in Greek and Roman Artillery: Technical Treatises"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The catapult (katapeltikon) was invented under the patronage of Dionysius I, tyrant of Syracuse, in the 4th century bc. At first only the arrow-firing variant was used, and it was not until the reign of Alexander the Great that stone-projecting catapults were introduced. The Romans adopted these weapons during the Punic Wars and further developed them, before introducing the new arrow-firing ballista and stone-throwing onager. This title traces the often controversial design, development and construction of these weapons throughout the history of the classical world.

Book excerpt: Whether playing at defending their own castle or simply chucking pumpkins over a fence, wannabe marauders and tinkerers will become fast acquainted with Ludgar, the War Wolf, Ill Neighbor, Cabulus, and the Wild Donkey—ancient artillery devices known commonly as catapults. Building these simple yet sophisticated machines introduces fundamentals of math and physics using levers, force, torsion, tension, and traction. Instructions and diagrams illustrate how to build seven authentic working model catapults, including an early Greek ballista, a Roman onager, and the apex of catapult technology, the English trebuchet. Book Greek and Roman Siege Machinery 399 BC AD 363

Download or read book Greek and Roman Siege Machinery 399 BC AD 363 written by Duncan B Campbell and published by Osprey Publishing. This book was released on 2003-06-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siege machinery first appeared in the West during the Carthaginian invasion of Sicily in the late-5th century BC, in the form of siege towers and battering rams. After a 50-year hiatus these weapons of war re-appeared in the Macedonian armies of Philip II and Alexander the Great, a period that saw the height of their development in the Ancient World. The experience of warfare with both the Carthaginians during the later-3rd century BC, and Philip V of Macedon during the early-2nd century BC, finally prompted the introduction of the siege tower and the battering ram to the Roman arsenal. This title traces the development and use of these weapons across the whole of this period.

Book Roman Imperial Artillery

Download or read book Roman Imperial Artillery written by Alan Wilkins and published by . This book was released on 2024-05-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek and Roman torsion catapults were the most powerful missile projectors in the western world from their invention in the 4th century BC to the 11th century AD. Powered by the energy stored in tensioned and twisted rope springs, they outranged archers, slingers and all other missile launchers. After tracing their Greek origins, Roman Imperial Artillery describes the machines used from the time of Sulla and Caesar, the Roman improvements in their design and power, and their importance in the defence of the Roman Empire. Full-size reconstructions, made in collaboration with engineers Len Morgan and Tom Feeley, are based firmly on the author's revised editions of the texts of the Greek and Roman engineers, the latest archaeological finds and the evidence of relief sculptures. This revised edition analyses remarkable new finds from the Rhine frontier in the Netherlands and elsewhere. The 1999 find of a catapult frame in Germany allows an accurate reconstruction of the standard early Imperial bolt-shooter, as used in the AD 43 invasion of Britain by Vespasian against hillforts at Maiden Castle and Hod Hill. The siege-camps at Burnswark Hill, Dumfriesshire are investigated. Range and accuracy are examined, and technical tests demonstrate the strike power of these formidable and long-lived weapons.

Book The Ancient Artillery of Saalburg Translated

Download or read book The Ancient Artillery of Saalburg Translated written by Erwin Schramm and published by . This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Compilation of Schramm and SchneiderTranslated: First English EditionIn 1903, Erwin Schramm began one of the first in-depth, scientific studies of the artillery of Greece and Rome. With the assistance of Rudolf Schneider, he reconstructed several engines for the museum at Saalburg. In 1910, Schramm published his results, with a second edition appearing in 1918. Within, he discussed the processes by which he and Dr. Schneider first restored the ancient treatises on artillery and provides detailed descriptions of the extant Greek and Roman artifacts. Schramm then described in detail the reconstructed engines themselves, both their forms and their capabilities. General Schramm's work serves as much of the modern basis for research into this field. The 1918 edition included an additional chapter after the discovery of a 2nd century AD Roman catapult in the ruined town of Ampurias. This engine confirmed a great many of Schramm's hypotheses and provided a basis for reconsidering some of the other pieces. Details of a reconstructed engine based upon it were added to the end of what became Schramm's Chapter 5.Never having appeared in English before, this book combines both Schramm's 1918 edition and Schneider's supplement to the 1910 edition. These works are fundamental to understanding ancient artillery.

Book Roman and Greek Warfare

Download or read book Roman and Greek Warfare written by Eugene S. McCartney and published by . This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A three title volume on warfare in the ancient world No student of warfare in the ancient world should be without Eugene S. McCartney's brilliant work on the subject. This book appears in its entirety as the first piece in this special Leonaur edition which also includes campaign and battlefield maps absent from other editions. McCartney's research is exemplary; he not only gives examples of every aspect of Roman and Greek military tactics, formation, organisation, logistics, engineering and weapons but also provides numerous examples of how and when they were employed-successfully or otherwise-by describing relevant campaigns and engagements. What makes this Leonaur volume particularly important for military historians is that reference is frequently made to Creasy's classic work on the fifteen most decisive battles in history. Five of these conflicts took place in the ancient period and Creasy's learned essays on these battles have been included here for easy reference when reading the principal text. Also cited in the principal text is Ralph Payne-Gallwey's work on ancient artillery, such as the balista and catapult; that, complete with its excellent and detailed line drawings, concludes an essential volume that will enhance any library on warfare in the ancient world. Recommended. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Book Siege Warfare in the Roman World

Download or read book Siege Warfare in the Roman World written by Duncan B Campbell and published by Osprey Publishing. This book was released on 2005-05-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Osprey's study of various sieges in Rome, from 146 BC to 378 AD. Sieges were often pivotal in Rome's wars, including its conflicts with the Macedonians and Carthaginians in the 2nd century BC; the civil wars of the Republic; and the late Roman wars against the Sassanid Persians, who, alone amongst Rome's adversaries, were equally skilled in siegecraft. This book discusses the siege techniques employed by Roman armies and their opponents throughout the Republic and Empire. It shows that although the 1st century AD has long been considered the golden age of siegecraft, followed by a decline, new and effective siege techniques were in fact used in the following centuries.
