Book History empire and Islam

Download or read book History empire and Islam written by Vicky Randall and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-05 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first comprehensive treatment of the historian and public moralist E. A. Freeman since the publication of W. R. W. Stephens’ Life and Letters of Edward A. Freeman (1895). While Freeman is often viewed by modern scholars as a panegyrist to English progress and a proponent of Aryan racial theory, this study suggests that his world-view was more complicated than it appears. Revisiting Freeman’s most important historical works, this book positions Thomas Arnold as a significant influence on Freeman’s view of world-historical development. Conceptualising the past as cyclical rather than unilinear, and defining race in terms of culture, rather than biology, Freeman’s narratives were pervaded by anxieties about recapitulation. Ultimately, this study shows that Freeman’s scheme of universal history was based on the idea of conflict between Euro-Christendom and the Judeo-Islamic Orient, and this shaped his engagement with contemporary issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greater Greece and Greater Britain: And George Washington, the Expander of England The name of Greater Britain is one which of late years has become strangely familiar. It is possible that a generation back the words might have fallen harshly on patriotic ears. We were then used to believe that the Britain in which we lived was so great that there could be none greater. The name of Great Britain was per haps used without any very clear notion of its history; but it was at least accepted as implying greatness of some kind. Whatever may have been the exact meaning with which the name of Greater Britain was first brought in, it was, we may be sure, suggested by the seemingly older phrase of Great Britain. Those who first spoke of Greater Britain perhaps hardly knew that the name is as old as that of Great Britain, and, more than. Book The International Thought of Alfred Zimmern

Download or read book The International Thought of Alfred Zimmern written by Tomohito Baji and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-11 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive examination into the shifting international thought of Alfred Zimmern, a Grecophile intellectual, one of the most prominent liberal internationalists and the world’s first professor of IR. Identifying the writings of Burke and cultural Zionism as two important ideological sources that defined his project for empire and global order, this book argues that Zimmern can best be understood as an apostle of Commonwealth. It shows that while his proposals changed from cosmopolitan democracy to Euro-Atlanticism and to world federal government, they were constantly shaped by the organizing principles of a professedly universal British Commonwealth. It was the empire transhistorically chained to classical Athens.
