Download or read book A God Sized Vision written by Collin Hansen and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2010-11-02 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can God stir revival by his Holy Spirit, even in our culture today? Do we really believe he can? In a day of diminished expectations, A God-Sized Vision: Revival Accounts That Stretch and Stir recounts global examples of prior revivals, beginning with the Reformation and the Great Awakenings. It continues with the Welsh and Azusa Street revivals and those that occurred simultaneously in Asia, followed by the East Africa Revival of the 1930s. More recent revivals in North America that instigated parachurch or evangelistic ministries like those of Billy Graham and the revivals in China, particularly in Henan Province over the last forty years, give further evidence of church renewal. These stories enlarge our hearts, expand our minds, and empower our witness to the power of God at work in human history. Christians with a deep evangelistic commitment who realize that there is more to church growth than field-tested techniques will expand their vision by remembering God’s vision, as it has been revealed throughout history. Hansen and Woodbridge mine these stories of renewal to suggest how to get ready for revival today.

Download or read book Revival and Revivalism written by Iain Hamish Murray and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murray analyses a crucial period in American religious history, with particular attention to the major theme of the nature ofreligious revival. He rejects the common identification of revival & revivalism, showing that the latter differed from the former both in its origins & in its implications. Whereas in the earlier period, revival was understood as supernatural & heaven-sent, in the later period the ethos was much more man-centred & the methods employed much closer to the manipulative. The change in perspective can be summed up by saying that revival was first viewed as OEsent down, but later seen as OEworked up. A pivotal figure in the change & a major promoter of the new methods, was Charles Grandison Finney (1792-1875). Murray traces developments from the time of Samuel Davies (1763-61), through the age of the Second Great Awakening, to the New York Awakening of 1857-8. In addition to Davies & Finney, major leaders whose names recur in these pages include Archibald Alexander (1772-1851) of Princeton Theological Seminary, Edward D. Griffin (1770-1837) & Asahel Nettleton (1783-1844).Arnold DallimoreAn outstanding biography, scholarly, yet popularly written, of theleading preacher of the eighteenth-century evangelical revival.Whitefield (1714-70) is acknowledged to have made a greaterimpact on evangelical Christianity on both sides of the Atlanticthan any other preacher of the eighteenth century. Download or read book Young Fire written by Joel Hitchcock and published by . This book was released on 2016-02-16 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revivalist Joel Hitchcock believes that youth revivalists can learn from the revivals and spiritual awakenings of the past in order to facilitate a World-shaking Revival and Great Spiritual Awakening in our generation. Joel discusses several revivals of the past - such as the Great Awakenings, Welch Revival, the Azusa Street Outpouring, and others, as well as his own experiences, to challenge young people as the next generation of revivalists to usher in the greatest move of God this world has ever known. God is raising up a younger generation of revivalists for the end time Great Awakening. Great revivals and spiritual awakenings have occurred throughout history in many nations. Great revivalists blazed the trails of great awakenings in the past, and have passed the torch to a younger generation of revivalists. This younger generation of revivalists are the Young Fires that God is raising up to accomplish His purpose in the end time generation. The Young Fires look back and learn for the flaming revivalists of old, then look at our current generation, and cry, "Wilt thou not revive us again?" Joel Hitchcock Writes in the first chapter: "I wrote this book in 1999 under the title, The End Time Revival and Great Awakening. At the time I had a tremendous passion for God to move in our generation in a mighty way. I prayed that God would use me and raise up others to usher in a mighty end time revival and spiritual awakening. I have changed the title of this book to Young Fire - End Time Revivalists for the Great Awakening, because not only was I a youth when I wrote it, but it is my deep desire that young people that read it will catch the spirit of revivalism, and be used by God in their generation. As this book goes into yet another printing, I reflect on what the Lord has done in our generation. I see how God has raised up many powerful men and women of God, who were unknown at the time that I had written this book. Some of them were barely teenagers. God has indeed raised up some great revivalists. I now look forward to what God may do in the next 20 years and beyond. I wonder what kind of nation-shaking revival God may grant us. Regardless of the powerful revivals that God had blessed this nation with, they all seem to fall short from the awakenings in the USA, Wales, Hebrides and others from early 1700s through the early 1900s. Yet we cannot underestimate what God has done recently. Countless lives have been changed and the impact of this move of God will only be appreciated to its full in time to come. Yet our world seems in a horrible spiritual state. Perhaps these most recent revivals were but tremors before the big one hits. I believe this may be the case. An author is always hesitant to put into print a work he or she did many years back, without completely re-editing it, or maybe rewriting it altogether. The reason for this is because authors views on certain things change, they may have come upon greater clarity on certain theological topics, their audience is no longer the same as the one present when they initially wrote their book, and their writing skills have also changed or improved. However, I am putting this book back into print, as it was in 1999, with some editorial changes here and there. The reader may notice that the style of the author reflects that of an on-fire young man, eagerly expecting a mighty move of God. After serving God for many years, and after over 25 years of full time ministry, I am as on fire now as I have ever been. The spirit of revival is more caught than it is taught. It is my prayer that this work would stir a passion for revival and spiritual awakening in you and in our young generation... Dr. Joel Hitchcock, Georgetown Delaware, 2016
Download or read book Inventing the Great Awakening written by Frank Lambert and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of an astounding transatlantic phenomenon, a popular evangelical revival known in America as the first Great Awakening (1735-1745). Beginning in the mid-1730s, supporters and opponents of the revival commented on the extraordinary nature of what one observer called the "great ado," with its extemporaneous outdoor preaching, newspaper publicity, and rallies of up to 20,000 participants. Frank Lambert, biographer of Great Awakening leader George Whitefield, offers an overview of this important episode and proposes a new explanation of its origins. The Great Awakening, however dramatic, was nevertheless unnamed until after its occurrence, and its leaders created no doctrine nor organizational structure that would result in a historical record. That lack of documentation has allowed recent scholars to suggest that the movement was "invented" by nineteenth-century historians. Some specialists even think that it was wholly constructed by succeeding generations, who retroactively linked sporadic happenings to fabricate an alleged historic development. Challenging these interpretations, Lambert nevertheless demonstrates that the Great Awakening was invented--not by historians but by eighteenth-century evangelicals who were skillful and enthusiastic religious promoters. Reporting a dramatic meeting in one location in order to encourage gatherings in other places, these men used commercial strategies and newly popular print media to build a revival--one that they also believed to be an "extraordinary work of God." They saw a special meaning in contemporary events, looking for a transatlantic pattern of revival and finding a motive for spiritual rebirth in what they viewed as a moral decline in colonial America and abroad. By examining the texts that these preachers skillfully put together, Lambert shows how they told and retold their revival account to themselves, their followers, and their opponents. His inquiries depict revivals as cultural productions and yield fresh understandings of how believers "spread the word" with whatever technical and social methods seem the most effective.
