Book Great Philosophical Problems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Great Philosophical Problems Classic Reprint written by James Lindsay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Philosophical Problems This volume of Philosophical Essays is an inde pendent work and may be read as such. But it has, at the same time, an ulterior and higher value than that of a volume of detached essays. For, in its choice of subjects, it has been designed and pur posed to serve as a supplementary volume to my recent large work, entitled A Philosophical System of Theistic Idealism.' All the subjects dealt with in the present volume were touched upon in that work, but, because I could not, without serious dis proportion, give them in that work, elaborate as it was said to be, the extended treatment which I desired, I have provided this in the present volume. This enhances the value of the present work, by placing the contents of its chapters in a systematic relation and connection. It, at the same time, ex tends the range and widens the usefulness of the larger work, which it so supplements. This to me is important, for, however some philosophers may choose to entertain indifference as to the value of system, that appears to me no high or satisfying philosophic plane in which the mind is content to be the abode of merely individual, sporadic, and unrelated problems. There is no lack of philosophical variety in the work. Epistemology, Ontology and Metaphysics, and Ethics, are all represented in its chapters, in whose discussions Psychology and Logic also find frequent place. The book covers central topics in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy. An introductory chapter presents the foundations of philosophical discourse and offers a primer on the basics of logic. Those argumentative tools are then employed to address classic philosophical issues such as the relationship between body and mind, skepticism, the possibility of free will, and the existence of God. Later chapters engage issues of morality, justice, and liberty, as well as moral questions concerning abortion and the practice of punishment. Throughout, Alward aims for clarity, providing summaries, diagrams, and reflective questions to assist the student reader.

Download or read book An Introduction to Philosophy Classic Reprint written by W. Windelband and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Philosophy The Introduction to Philosophy which I here offer to the public gives a general view of philosophical problems and explains the tendencies of the various attempts to solve them. It seeks to provoke the reader to think over the great problems of life. It is in no sense an introduction to a special philosophical system, but it makes a very Wide survey of all the possibilities in the way of solutions. Naturally, it is based upon the author's personal view, as the student of philosophy will easily perceive; but this will not be pressed, or suffered to influence the author's judgment in appraising other systems of thought. In View of the aim of the work I have not found it necessary to burden it with literary references to the historic systems to which reference is made in its pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Philosophical Problems There is no lack of philosophical variety in the work. Epistemology, Ontology and Metaphysics, and Ethics, are all represented in its chapters, in whose discussions Psychology and Logic also find frequent place. The chapters on "The Character of Cognitive Acts," "Philosophy and Faith," and "The Phenomenology of Pain" appear for the first time. My best thanks are tendered to Mrs Paul Carus for cordial permission to republish the chapters on "The Greatest Problem in Value," and on "Rationalism and Voluntarism," which appeared in 'The Monist'; to Dr Silas M'Bee, editor of 'The Constructive Quarterly,' New York, from which journal the chapters on "The Ontological Consciousness" and "The Unity of God and Man" are reprinted; and to Professor James H. Tufts, University of Chicago, editor of 'The International Journal of Ethics,' from which the chapter on "The Ethical Value of Individuality" is taken. The chapter on "The Ethics of some Modern World-Theories" appeared in the 'Bibliotheca Sacra' while my dear and distinguished friend, the late Professor G. F. Wright, D.D., LL.D., was editor. All these papers have been revised, and minor alterations and additions made, but without substantially affecting the character of the papers as they originally appeared. In their present form they will, I hope, find a new circle of readers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Introduction to the History of Modern Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Introduction to the History of Modern Philosophy Classic Reprint written by Arthur Stone Dewing and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the History of Modern Philosophy There are at the present time accessible to the English reader many excellent and comprehensive histories of philoso phy. And the only reason for treating the subject again has arisen from the h0pe that a more simple treatment would prove useful to those readers unfamiliar with the technicalities of recent philosophical systems. For various reasons the bistori cal side serves as perhaps the only broad and permanently valuable approach to the whole field of philosophy, while it is a firm conviction with many that some slight acquaintance with the development of philosophical problems is indispensable to their appreciation. This work is intended as an introduction to the subject, and is not the expression of a critical or recon structive attitude; it makes no attempt to trace the logico genetic development of modern thought, nor does it pretend to consider every aspect of historical development. Book Problems in Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Problems in Philosophy Classic Reprint written by John Bascom and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in Philosophy This volume may seem to be constructed on the idea of gathering up the fragments that nothing may be lost. This precept, however, wise as it often is, does not express the law of production in the present case. A few points in philosophy invited more clear or more thorough state ment. This labor I chose to undertake directly and briefly, rather than to attempt it as a part of a more ex tended and systematic work. One evil in philosophy is the accumulation of fruitless discussions. A few positions fortunately taken may be easily lost in their practical value by the extended treatises which accompany them, traversing old ground with no sufl'icient reward. Philoso phy, above most topics, calls for an explicit statement of a few fundamental principles, and a pushing of inquiry in reference to them, till some satisfactory conclusion is reached. The present volume aims to make, in the most direct way, a contribution on the more obscure topics of philosophy. What it has to say is not, taken collectively, extended, and may be still farther reduced by the reader by confining his attention to the one or more subjects which may appeal directly to him. Only one of these discussions - that on liberty - has appeared elsewhere, and that essay has been somewhat modified. Book A History of the Problems of Philosophy Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Problems of Philosophy Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Paul Janet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Problems of Philosophy, Vol. 1 These characteristics are conspicuous in our bearing towards the History of philosophy, as well as other universal undertakings. We can boast of no serious attempt at presenting in rational order the great systems of philosophy, which are the successive exponents of the main stages of Western civilization. We have written text-books for students, and some very competent and illuminating monographs on individual thinkers. But there has been no attempt at the effective co - ordination of these, nor have we sought to give effect to the conviction that philosophy is, in truth, a continuous endeavour, and the reflection of a continuous experience. And yet one has to go but a little way in philosophy to realize that its great systems can be interpreted only in their context, and its problems effectively handled only through their history. We have to go back to the past not merely because here, as elsewhere, we require the help of earlier thinkers so as to start from their results, but because philosophy must reflect life. It is the exposition of experience. It is experience itself breaking out into explicitness, blossoming into clear consciousness, comprehending itself - at least to some extent. And experience always garners its past into its present: what it is can be discovered only by laying out what it has been, by following the steps of its self-articulating, self-concreting process. Both on account of the bearing of philosophy upon life, and of the history of philosophy upon philosophy itself, one may say that a competent account of its great systems is the most urgent desideratum of English reflective thought at the present time. This book was released on 2017-03-17 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Profound Problems in Theology and Philosophy In Philosophy there is the profound question of Sub stance - that which is properly regarded as the primary foundation of what we experience as the two sub-depart ments of matter and of mind. All that can be hoped for here, is to formulate such definitions as shall present a natural concatenation of these departments with the primal foundation: such, moreover, as will go to ex pound the relationship of objects, as differentiated from one another; and further, such as will elucidate the operations of what is called Cause, in producing the phenomenon which is called Efiect; and in this way to expound the eventualities of nature in all their complex and minute variety. This. In fact, is the problem given forth by Hume, and left unsolved by Kant - a problem which constitutes the Philosophy of law. Book Philosophical Problems of Classical Film Theory

Download or read book Philosophical Problems of Classical Film Theory written by Noël Carroll and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an analytical inquiry into classical film theory (that is, film theory before the advent of the semiotics and poststructuralism that began to dominate academic film literature in the 1970s). The author brings his training and experience as both an analytical philosopher and a film scholar to bear on its chief tenets. Using Rudolf Arnheim, Andre Bazin, and V. F. Perkins as representatives of major types of thinking about film, he provides clear and concise overviews of their work and locates their thought against the critical and theoretical currents of their times, the historical development of the cinema, and the prevalent issues in philosophical aesthetics. This closely reasoned book characterizes the structure of classical film theory, attempts to diagnose its shortcomings, and suggests avenues of inquiry for postclassical film theory. In addition, it includes many illuminating discussions of particular films and cinematic techniques. Arnheim and Bazin represent opposing positions on the nature of photographic recording that are so deeply entrenched in our intellectual culture that these arguments seem to return over and over whenever discussion of the photographic arts is broached. Professor Carroll offers a uniquely penetrating appraisal of their work. Perkins, a more contemporary thinker, has not been subjected to any detailed analysis until now.

Book Philosophical Problems of Medicine

Download or read book Philosophical Problems of Medicine written by Theophilus Parvin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-22 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophical Problems of Medicine: Presidential Address Before the American Medical Association, at the Thirtieth Annual Session, Atlanta, Ga., May 6, 1879 Science, Literature, Philosophy, and Theology are the great subjects of human study. Science is the knowledge of nature and of nature's laws. Literature, including history, is the representation of man's life; it tells his joys and sorrows, his aspirations and achievements, his victories and defeats, his glory and shame; it is man's autobiography. Philosophy studies man's psychical nature, both in its mental and moral mani foetations; it seeks to discover the relation he bears to the past and to the future, to nature and to the universe, and in its highest development brings the reflecting mind to believe in an ultimate unity, a great first cause, the fountain of all other causes, a power originant of them if not immanent in them. Theology discusses the being, attributes, and providence of the Divine, the uncreated, the eternal, whose existence philosophy in its sublimest aspirations maintains, even if that existence he not one of the fundamental convictions of the human mind. Nevertheless, these divisions are in some degree arbitrary. For example, if there be a Divine Being, all-wise and all powerful, and nature his creation, his name will be recorded on its pages; and to the study of such record, the title of natural theology has been given.
