Their contributions to this volume not only outline their landmark contributions to management theory, but also reflect on the process of theory development, presenting their own personal accounts of the gestation of these theories. The result is not only an ambitious and original panorama of the key ideas in management theory presented by their originators, but also a unique collection of reflections on the process of theory development, an area which to date little has been written about by those who have actually had experience of building theory. In their concluding chapter, Ken G. Smith and Michael A. Hitt draw together some common themes about the development of management theory over the last half a century, and suggest some of the conclusions to be drawn about how theory comes into being.

Book Understanding the Entrepreneurial Mind

Download or read book Understanding the Entrepreneurial Mind written by Alan L. Carsrud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in the functioning of the human mind can certainly be traced to Plato and Aristotle who often dealt with issues of perceptions and motivations. While the Greeks may have contemplated the human condition, the modern study of the human mind can be traced back to Sigmund Freud (1900) and the psychoanalytic movement. He began the exploration of both conscious and unconscious factors that propelled humans to engage in a variety of behaviors. While Freud’s focus may have been on repressed sexuality our focus in this volume lies elsewhere. We are concerned herein with the expression of the cognitions, motivations, passions, intentions, perceptions, and emotions associated with entrepreneurial behaviors. We are attempting in this volume to expand on the work of why entrepreneurs think d- ferently from other people (Baron, 1998, 2004). During the decade of the 1990s the eld of entrepreneurship research seemingly abandoned the study of the entrepreneur. This was the result of earlier research not being able to demonstrate some unique entrepreneurial personality, trait, or char- teristic (Brockhaus and Horwitz, 1986). It was both a naïve and simplistic search for the “holy grail” of what made entrepreneurs the way they are. However, many of the researchers in this volume have never gave up the belief that a better und- standing of the mind of the entrepreneur would give us a better understanding of the processes that lead to the creation of new ventures.

Book Revisiting the Entrepreneurial Mind

Download or read book Revisiting the Entrepreneurial Mind written by Malin Brännback and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-08 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores various aspects of cognitive and motivational psychology as they impact entrepreneurial behavior. Building upon the 2009 volume, Understanding the Entrepreneurial Mind, the editors and contributors explore the cognitions, motivations, passions, intentions, perceptions, and emotions associated with entrepreneurial behaviors, in each case preserving their original chapters and enhancing them with thoughtful and targeted updates, reflecting on the most recent developments in theory and practice, telling the story of what has transpired in the last decade in the field of entrepreneurial psychology. The volume addresses such questions as: Why do some people start business and others do not? Is entrepreneurship a natural quality or can it be taught? Do entrepreneurs think differently from others? While there is a great deal of literature exploring the dynamics of new firm creation, policies to promote innovation and technology transfer, and the psychology of creativity; research on entrepreneurial mindset or cognition is relatively new, and draws largely from such related fields as organizational behavior, cognitive and social psychology, career development, and consumer research. In this book, editors Brännback and Carsrud have reassembled the contributors to Understanding the Entrepreneurial Mind to discuss new research paradigms given their vantage point years after the original volume was published. Featuring the most current literature references, Revisiting the Entrepreneurial Mind continues to challenge conventional approaches to entrepreneurship and articulate an agenda for future research.

Book excerpt: Managerial, organizational, and entrepreneurial scholars across disciplines have discussed the topic of resilience from developed economies, yet much remains unknown on its practice during modern times and the crises that have recently affected daily lives, business, and workplaces. The Handbook of Research on Entrepreneurship and Organizational Resilience During Unprecedented Times explores experiences in different managerial, organizational, and entrepreneurial issues, particularly from the perspective of emerging countries. By investigating different levels with interdisciplinary approaches and integrative frameworks, it advances new perspectives for future research. Book Handbook of Research on Approaches to Alternative Entrepreneurship Opportunities

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Approaches to Alternative Entrepreneurship Opportunities written by Dantas, José Guilherme Leitão and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In some cases, technology-based projects have revolutionized the way of living by contributing to job and wealth creation. These types of ventures, regardless of their outstanding relevance, are the exception rather than the norm in that they account for only a very small percentage of entrepreneurial activity. Although not ignoring these important ventures, the main goal of this title is to fully unleash the wide potential of the entrepreneurial activity, exploring and highlighting the somewhat hidden part, which is ultimately responsible for the largest part of new businesses and, as a consequence, for the wellbeing of millions of people virtually everywhere. The Handbook of Research on Approaches to Alternative Entrepreneurship Opportunities is a collection of innovative research on the methods and applications of entrepreneurial activity beyond the traditional boundaries of entrepreneurship research. While highlighting topics including collective business, organizational performance, and generational differences, this book is ideally designed for entrepreneurs, developers, researchers, business managers, industry professionals, academicians, and students seeking to draw attention to distinctive and multifaceted types of entrepreneurship.

Book The Future of Entrepreneurship in Africa

Download or read book The Future of Entrepreneurship in Africa written by Robert E. Hinson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entrepreneurial and Small Business Development in Africa focuses on entrepreneurial development and the development of small businesses in Africa. The central idea of this book is that entrepreneurial development and small business development are connected. Entrepreneurship is lauded as an engine of growth (economic development and job creation), with small businesses often contributing to new job creation. Also, entrepreneurship and small business development are the heart of many countries’ economies. The decision to focus on entrepreneurial development and small business development is that first, there is a consensus that most entrepreneurial activities are aimed at creating small new ventures. Second, countries that give special attention to entrepreneurship stand a chance of industrialization. Third, Africa has been reported as having a rich entrepreneurial landscape as the continent’s wealthiest individuals generated their wealth as trailblazing entrepreneurs. Fourth, small-scale entrepreneurs and businesses form the backbone of economic activities across the continent. A motivation to focus on entrepreneurial and small business development is the generally accepted view that start-ups in Africa are growing calling for understanding into how to enhance productivity, efficiencies, and application of new technologies. The book aims to enhance the understanding of stakeholders (business owners, governments, practitioners) to overturn challenges such as inadequate start-up capital, competition, lack of employees with the right skills, and low use of technology. The ability to develop entrepreneurship in Africa, and the role of small-medium enterprises cannot be underestimated. The promotion of entrepreneurship in Africa is crucial as it creates jobs, provides decent livelihoods, and contributes to GDP. Most entrepreneurial initiatives in developing economies entail identifying opportunities and new venture creation. It is worth recognizing that most new ventures created take the form of small businesses and the entrepreneurial processes involve entrepreneurs’ knowledge and skills, identifying opportunities, involvement in setting up a business and managing the business. The various aspects of this book focus on many entrepreneurial activities that are undertaken on the African continent. This book is focused on African countries since there is a reason to be optimistic about the prospects for growth and entrepreneurship. To achieve entrepreneurial success in African countries, the African Development Bank (2021) proposes that there must be a link between macro and firm-level characteristics that will serve as the mix of entrepreneurship in societies. This book, therefore, considers some macro-level factors such as education, training, and skills development, technological developments, government programs, and entrepreneurial challenges and opportunities. At the firm-level, this book focuses on entrepreneurial initiatives such as branding and marketing.
