Book excerpt: 'Great Britain's Sea Policy: A Reply to an American Critic' is the publication of a historical article written by the Australian-born British classical scholar Gilbert Murray. Professor Murray responds to an earlier article by a Mr. Arthur Bullard, a critic of Britain's policy on naval warfare during WW1. Bullard's criticism of Britain stems from his view that Britain is no longer interested in ensuring fair play at war when it comes to sea battles as evidenced by the ignoring of the 'Declaration of London.' Murray counters this view with a few explanations of his own.

Book Great Britain and Sea Power 1815 1853

Download or read book Great Britain and Sea Power 1815 1853 written by Christopher John Bartlett and published by . This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an analysis of the main forces determining British naval policy between the defeat of Napoleon and the start of the Crimean War. It is based on official and provate papers and challenges some of the traditional charges that naval policy was too conservative, notably in the introduction of steamships. These were weaknesses, but the fleet compares favourably with other navies. It also has to be borne in mind that in the Crimean War it was engaged against fortications rather than enemy ships. The navy was an undoubted success as a strategic instrument before and during that war.

Book Great Britain International Law and the Evolution of Maritime Strategic Thought 1856 1914

Download or read book Great Britain International Law and the Evolution of Maritime Strategic Thought 1856 1914 written by Gabriela A. Frei and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-16 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gabriela A. Frei addresses the interaction between international maritime law and maritime strategy in a historical context, arguing that both international law and maritime strategy are based on long-term state interests. Great Britain as the predominant sea power in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries shaped the relationship between international law and maritime strategy like no other power. This study explores how Great Britain used international maritime law as an instrument of foreign policy to protect its strategic and economic interests, and how maritime strategic thought evolved in parallel to the development of international legal norms. Frei offers an analysis of British state practice as well as an examination of the efforts of the international community to codify international maritime law in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Great Britain as the predominant sea power as well as the world's largest carrier of goods had to balance its interests as both a belligerent and a neutral power. With the growing importance of international law in international politics, the volume examines the role of international lawyers, strategists, and government officials who shaped state practice. Great Britain's neutrality for most of the period between 1856 and 1914 influenced its state practice and its perceptions of a future maritime conflict. Yet, the codification of international maritime law at the Hague and London conferences at the beginning of the twentieth century demanded a reassessment of Great Britain's legal position.

Book Routledge Handbook of National and Regional Ocean Policies

Download or read book Routledge Handbook of National and Regional Ocean Policies written by Biliana Cicin-Sain and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive handbook, prepared by leading ocean policy academics and practitioners from around the world, presents in-depth analyses of the experiences of fifteen developed and developing nations and four key regions of the world that have taken concrete steps toward cross-cutting and integrated national and regional ocean policy. All chapters follow a common framework for policy analysis. While most coastal nations of the world already have a variety of sectoral policies in place to manage different uses of the ocean (such as shipping, fishing, oil and gas development), in the last two decades, the coastal nations covered in the book have undertaken concerted efforts to articulate and implement an integrated, ecosystem-based vision for the governance of ocean areas under their jurisdiction. This includes goals and procedures to harmonize existing uses and laws, to foster sustainable development of ocean areas, to protect biodiversity and vulnerable resources and ecosystems, and to coordinate the actions of the many government agencies that are typically involved in oceans affairs. The book highlights the serious conflicts of use in most national ocean zones and the varying attempts by nations to follow the prescriptions emanating from the 1982 UN Law of the Sea Convention and the outcomes of the 1992, 2002, and 2012 sustainable development summits. The interrelationship among uses and processes in the coast and ocean requires that ocean governance be integrated, precautionary, and anticipatory. Overall, the book provides a definitive state-of-the-art review and analysis of national and regional ocean policies around the world.

Book The Rise And Fall of British Naval Mastery

Download or read book The Rise And Fall of British Naval Mastery written by Paul Kennedy and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Kennedy's classic naval history, now updated with a new introduction by the author This acclaimed book traces Britain's rise and fall as a sea power from the Tudors to the present day. Challenging the traditional view that the British are natural 'sons of the waves', he suggests instead that the country's fortunes as a significant maritime force have always been bound up with its economic growth. In doing so, he contributes significantly to the centuries-long debate between 'continental' and 'maritime' schools of strategy over Britain's policy in times of war. Setting British naval history within a framework of national, international, economic, political and strategic considerations, he offers a fresh approach to one of the central questions in British history. A new introduction extends his analysis into the twenty-first century and reflects on current American and Chinese ambitions for naval mastery. 'Excellent and stimulating' Correlli Barnett 'The first scholar to have set the sweep of British Naval history against the background of economic history' Michael Howard, Sunday Times 'By far the best study that has ever been done on the subject ... a sparkling and apt quotation on practically every page' Daniel A. Baugh, International History Review 'The best single-volume study of Britain and her naval past now available to us' Jon Sumida, Journal of Modern History
