Book Great Britain Egypt and the Suez Canal Classic Reprint

Download or read book Great Britain Egypt and the Suez Canal Classic Reprint written by F. Egerton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Britain, Egypt, and the Suez Canal Most people seem to believe that we have in Egypt a vital interest which we are bound, more than other nations, to defend, in the free and unrestricted use Of the Suez Canal. Few seem disposed to question the doctrine that the open passage through the Suez Canal is indis pensable to the commercial prosperity, to the political greatness, and to the very integrity Of the British Empire. An attempt, then, to demonstrate the fallacy Of the popular idea that through Egypt and the Suez Canal Our enemies can strike at our mercantile greatness and at our imperial power, is not likely to meet with a favourable hearing. Yet I hope to show this, and illustrate it from my own personal experience. And if it can be done, it is worth trying to do it. For it is of the utmost consequence that we should all under stand Our real stake in the Suez Canal. This once clearly understood, we shall not be liable to panic; we shall not let ourselves be drawn into complications, wasteful Of the blood Of our citizens and the substance of our country complications, moreover, which constantly expose us to the danger Of becoming involved in a European war. Book Secret History of the English Occupation of Egypt

Download or read book Secret History of the English Occupation of Egypt written by Wilfrid Scawen Blunt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secret History of the English Occupation of Egypt: Being a Personal Narrative of Events When I first arranged with Mr. Blunt to publish The Secret History of the English Occupation of Egypt, I suggested that he write for the American Edition a brief foreword bringing the book into even closer relation to the anglo-egyptian situation as it stands today. He thought this idea a good one, and agreed to write such a note. But Mr. Blunt was born in 1840, and has for a number of years been in failing health. In June he wrote me that he was so ill as to be quite unable to finish the foreword, which he had actually commenced to write. He felt further more that any advantage the edition would gain by having a new preface by him would be more than counterbalanced by any delay in the appear ance of the book at the present extremely critical moment. He remarked further: What could I have said more appropriate to day as a new preface than the few words which already stand as the short preface I set to the first edition of my Secret History (published in Lon don and which you reprint in this new edition). This and my poem The Wind and the Whirlwind (which you also give as an Appendix). Both are absolutely true of the present shameful position of England in Egypt and the calamity so closely threatening her Eastern Empire. What could I say more exactly suited? This is the punishment we are reaping today for our sin of that sad morning on the Nile which saw the first English gun open its thunder of aggression just forty years ago at Alexandria in the name of England's honour. What could I add to my words of grief and shame then uttered and repeated here? Let these stand for my new preface. My day is done. Alas! That I should have lived to see those words come true of England's punishment, more than true. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Question of Egypt in Anglo-French Relations, 1875-1904 The passing of British ascendancy in Egypt naturally raises the question of how it originated in the first instance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Egyptian Problem At a time when self-government is recognised more clearly than ever before to be the keystone of the British Empire and has been set before the peoples of the greatest of our Oriental dependencies as the goal which they also shall reach, it is not unreasonable that Egypt should claim something of the same boon as the corollary of the permanent association With the British Empire into which we sought to force her during the war by the proclamation of a British Protectorate. Were that her Whole claim, few if any responsible Englishmen would refuse to go a long way to satisfy it Without questioning too closely the actual fitness of the Egyptians to govern themselves. But the Egyptian Nationalists, who have at least temporarily carried the bulk of their articulate fellow-countrymen With them, go much further than that. Download or read book Two Years of British Intervention in Egypt written by William Thackeray Marriott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Years of British Intervention in Egypt: A Letter the Marquis of Salisbury, K. G While many members Of the Legislature have been devoting the Short parliamentary recess to demon strating about a new Reform Bill, concerning the main principle Of which there is no dispute, and which would quickly become law if her Majesty's present advisers would act up to the professions they made prior to 1880, I have been spending some Of the time in Egypt with the View Of finding out from personal Observation the effect Of English intervention in that country. Important as a new Suffrage Bill must necessarily be, and beneficial as would be any complete measure extending household suffrage to the counties, and SO arranging the distribution Of seats as to give a fair proportion Of political power to the labourers in the country and the artisans in the towns, yet at this particular juncture I feel certain that the Egyptian question is Of far more importance, affecting as it does, not merely the happiness and well-being of the five-and a-half millions of inhabitants of Lower Egypt and the eleven millions Of Upper Egypt, but to a greater degree the vital interests Of all classes in our own country, and the reputation, and perhaps even the very stability, Of the Empire itself.
