Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous Painters of America While the present list of Famous Painters of America is limited to fourteen names, it is by no means definitive. Others who have strong claims for consideration may be found in a general history of art, which this book does not claim to be. Nevertheless, the ones here chosen are broadly representative of the best in line and color that our country has yet produced: and while their work is not considered to the exclu sion of other noted names, it will always be shown with the foremost examples of its period. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Great Artists IN trying to interest the children of our own school in some of the world' s great pictures and the artists who painted them, we felt the need of reading material on the subject. We searched for it, but found nothing that could be put into the hands of young children. The sketches contained in this book were then written. The lessons given are intended for supplementary reading in the third and fourth grades. We suggest that picture study precede the reading in class of each sketch. The abundance of good copies of the masterpieces of art, which may be obtained at a very small price, makes the accomplishment of this easy. A. Picture never fails to arouse the interest of a child. Through good pictures he may be taught to recognize and appreciate the beautiful in art. May we not hope that this will lead him to an appreciation of the good and the beautiful in whatsoever form it may be presented to him? N o wonder that, in Raphael's time when this Spirit was fresh and strong, it gave a character of piety and sweetness to the works of all the painters of Umbria. From these two causes, the secluded position of the region and the influence of Saint Francis, arose what Is called the Umbrian school of painting. All painters belonging to this school made pictures very. Beautiful and full of fine religious feeling. One April morning in 1483, to the home of Giovanni Santi, the painter, and his wife Magia, a dear little boy came, as millions of boys and girls have since come, to cheer and to bless. The father and mother were very proud of their little son, and feeling perhaps that a more than ordinary child had been given them, they gave him the name of Raphael, as one of good omen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Master Painters: Being Pages From the Romance of Art But though the roaring current Of modern life passes him by, yet never were people more curious to hear about the lives of artists and their doings. Why is this? What is it that outsiders find so attractive about Bohemia? They would not live and work in a smell of paint and varnish and snatch scanty meals in the midst of the muddle. They have little taste for poverty, which is only picturesque to the outsider. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Graphic Forms: The Arts as Related to the Book To these speakers who served their arts without monetary reward and then, at great additional expense in time and effort, revised their talks to fit the requirements of book form sincere thanks must be given. A special word of appreciation is due Philip Hofer, whose admirable summation of the four meetings was one of their out standing features and whose words, as they appear here, have suffered severely in color and content because of limitations of space; Mr. Hofer's generous acceptance of drastic editorial abridg ment matched in quality the excellence of the commentary with which he brought our meetings to a close. It is a pleasure also to acknowledge the cordial hospitality of John P. Coolidge, Director of the F ogg Museum, and his entire staff. Book Sketches of Great Painters for Young People Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sketches of Great Painters for Young People Classic Reprint written by Colonna Murray Dallin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Great Painters for Young People Pictures should play an important part in the edu cation of young people. The study of the art treasures of the world, revealing, as they do, the thoughts and feelings of great men of all ages and climes, helps greatly in the development of mind and character. Such study not only is a source of pleasure, but leads to a deeper knowledge of nature and of life, for the artist stands as an interpreter between nature and man. The primary object of this book is to interest young people in the lives and the works of some of the mas ters of painting. A secondary object is to aid them in making collections of photographs. This work is of real value to them, and they should be encouraged in it, for it is through familiarity with pictures that one learns to understand and love them. At the end of the book is placed a list of pictures, photographs of which are recommended for mounting. In choosing photographs, care should be taken to select those which are reproductions from the original pic tures, and not from engravings or copies. The photo graphs recommended for mounting and many others mentioned in the volume may be obtained of Messrs. C. H. Dunton Co., Boston, Mass, to whom thanks are due for their courtesy in supplying many of the photographs used in illustrating this book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art in Painting In this book an effort is made to trace in the history Of painting the essential continuity Of the great traditions and to Show that the best Of the modern painters use the same means, to the same general ends, as did the great Florentines, Venetians, Dutchmen and Spaniards. TO Show that continuity, it has been necessary to analyze the plastic forms of the principal painters from the dawn Of the Italian Renaissance down to the present day. His torical data are treated as merely incidental: no attempt has been made to present a complete summary Of the history of painting, although no important movement and no really first-class artist has been entirely left out of account in the general evaluations. Book Great Masters Classic Reprint

Download or read book Great Masters Classic Reprint written by John Lafarge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-05 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Masters Great artist of the past as a free agent, early possessed of all the power and development acquired by long work against outside pressure, and to think of him as imposing the form of his ideas upon an easy world. Hence, sometimes we think of Albrecht D'urer as bringing Teutonic art into Italy, while, of course, he is nothing more than a German student going to the land of greater art. We throw back into the early position of the great man the image of his full development; we make him out as conscious from the beginning of all his capacities. Instead of recognising in him the same laws that belong to other developments, we insist on his being all of one piece - as if, like Minerva, he had sprung all armed from the brain of Jupiter. In short, we forget that these men had to die long ago to obtain the authority which they hold to - day. It is possible that none of them achieved their best work, or carried out their intentions in full. Rubens and Raphael may have had some such chance, but we know that we see in Michelangelo and Rembrandt the expression of a struggle against outside necessities. To give a full account of the life of any great artist the history of each piece of work should be taken up as we take up the story of a general's campaign. I have not expressly stated these points in the brief essays. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Fine Arts Vol 10 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fine Arts Vol 10 Classic Reprint written by Kenyon Cox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fine Arts, Vol. 10 The glamour of the unknown is woven about the art ist's studio, and the romance of an imagined Bohemia has tempted many into the paths of art Who had no need and no right to walk there. The glamour fades early, and the atmosphere of Bohemia is not that in which masterpieces are wrought. The studio of the true artist is a workshop where long hours are spent in exhausting labor, a workshop where there are few holidays and no vacations. No solid success in art was ever won easily, and no lasting reputation made that was not earned by untiring industry and indomitable perseverance. In its demand for hard work and rigorous devotion the profession of art does not differ from the professions of law or medicine. Like them, also, it asks for a long novitiate, and generally for a struggle with poverty and discouragement. Unlike them, it offers no great rewards. In this country, at least, no man can earn with brush or chisel anything approaching the income of a great lawyer or a great surgeon. If he can live in decency and comfort and give his children a fair education and a start in life, he is among the lucky. He can rarely hope to leave much behind him but his unsold works. Book The Life and Art of Sandro Botticelli Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life and Art of Sandro Botticelli Classic Reprint written by Julia Cartwright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Art of Sandro Botticelli Was kindly received by the public last autumn. On larger lines and with greater fullness of detail, I have here tried to give some account of Sandro Botticelli, both as the painter and the man; of his relations with the Medici and the Florentine humanists on the one hand, and of his connection with Savonarola and the Piagnone revival on the other. At the same time I have endeavoured to follow the course of his artistic training and development, and to enumerate and describe the works which, in the opinion of the best critics, may be attributed to this master with certainty. Although of late years much study has been devoted to Botticelli and his art, our knowledge of the great artist's history remains scanty and limited, and no complete record of his life can be given. But his personality and his works are both of them so attractive, and the interest which he inspires at the present time is so deep, that this study, incomplete and fragmentary as it necessarily is, may be acceptable to those who wish to gain a clearer knowledge of one of the most remark able painters of the Florentine Renaissance.
