Book excerpt: The need for a suitable laboratory test that will evaluate greases for ball and roller bearing service and allow correlation of test results with field service is widely recognized. Many machines have been developed for this purpose but correlation among machines and between laboratory tests and field service has in many cases not been too satisfactory. Extensive field tests are the only method by which satisfactory and final proof of performance may be obtained. The matter is complicated by the wide variety of service conditions under which ball and roller bearings operate. The Texas Company, recognizing the shortcoming of depending upon any one laboratory test, has developed at Beacon Laboratories, a number of machines for evaluating ball and roller bearing greases. Some are used as screening tests, others for long-time tests. Machines developed by others also have been investigated on a cooperative basis. In this paper, emphasis is placed on room and elevated temperature conditions, rather than the specialized subject of low temperature evaluation. The following machines, representative of those now in use by The Texas Company, will be described, along with typical test results on various types of greases: 1. Grease-Breakdown Machine. 2. Torque-Breakdown Machine No. 1. 3. Torque-Breakdown Machine No. 2. 4. Beacon High-Temperature, High-speed Ball Bearing Performance Test. 5. SKF Machine--original and modified for elevated temperatures. 6. Beacon Wheel Bearing Grease Tester. 7. Beacon Vibrating Wheel Bearing Grease Tester.
