Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gray Hair, Black Belt", by Mr. Carl "Cal" Tuohey, describes one elderly-ish persons experience during a series of Tae Kwon Do classes. While geared toward those over the age of 50, this book will help anyone that has thought about taking a martial arts class and provides hilarious details on what to expect. The book is divided into two parts. Part I describes the inner workings of a Tae Kwon Do class as seen through the author's comedic eyes. Mr. Tuohey begins by explaining his decision to start Tae Kwon Do at such a late stage in life. It ends with Mr. Tuohey taking you through his Black Belt testing and earning his Black Belt. The book covers topics such as "The Class Format", "Sparring" and "Belt Ranks". It also provides descriptions for the various Korean terms used in class, and the patterns necessary to reach each belt level. While taking the classes, Mr. Tuohey contributed articles to the school's monthly newsletter. Part II of his book is a compilation of those light hearted fun-to-read articles. They reflect an exaggerated viewpoint of what Mr. Tuohey saw and experienced during his classes, told as only Mr. Tuohey can.

Book Kicking and Screaming

Download or read book Kicking and Screaming written by Melanie D Gibson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Melanie Gibson was an independent woman with a good job, multiple college degrees, and a condo in the trendy part of town. She also had a few mental illnesses, a minor substance abuse problem, and rotten relationship skills. She was a high-functioning crazy who needed a good kick in the pants, literally and metaphorically. In early 2013, as a last desperate means to save her sanity, Melanie turned to a nearly forgotten childhood activity: the Korean martial art of taekwondo. As if the universe were listening, she discovered her West Texas childhood taekwondo instructors’ Grandmaster operated a taekwondo school a few miles from her home in Fort Worth, Texas—and she decided to start her training over as a white belt. In taekwondo, Melanie felt like she had a fresh start in more ways than one. She found an inner peace she’d never known before, a sense of community, a newfound confidence, and a positive outlook on life. The kicking and screaming she was doing in class quieted the long-term kicking and screaming in her mind. Funny and frank, Kicking and Screaming: A Memoir of Madness and Martial Arts is the story of Melanie’s life-changing journey from troubled, lost soul to confident taekwondo black belt.

Follow along with Cristofo, a sharp-minded and exceptionally skilled young prodigy who can do little to suppress his excitement when he hears of an impending visit from one of his grandfather’s longtime friends who just so happens to be a venerated wizard of the highest repute. Bewilderment takes hold of the seasoned conjurer as well as the starry-eyed youngster when the two eventually come face-to-face, and the boy’s remarkable nature and irrepressible spirit comes to reveal an inevitability that simply cannot be ignored. And so, at the onset of their initial encounter, it is determined without question that a wizardly vocation would be Cristofo’s destiny. And the rest is history as adventures and fiercely savage battles abound, wherein the affluent and supremely trained young champion associates with and encounters a wide assortment of creatures and characters of variegated origins, qualities, and kinds. Immerse yourself into the fantastical storytelling, where a new and refreshing vitality is breathed into the admittedly underdeveloped genre on wizards. This is a whimsical work of fiction written in a Tolkien-inspired style and with a middle earth–resembling flavor and feel.
