Download or read book Precambrian Tectonics Illustrated written by International Union of Geological Sciences. Subcommission on Precambrian Structural Type Regions and published by Stuttgart : E. Schweizerbart'sche : Nägele u. Obermiller. This book was released on 1984 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the evening of 11th June 1979, the 35 ton motor cutter "K. J. V. Steenstrup", belonging to the Geological Survey of Greenland, anchored in a small bay at Tovqussap nuna, West Greenland. On board were nine members of the JUGS Commission on Tectonics and Subcommission on Precambrian Structural Type Regions. For the next 24 hours a strong gale and snow forced the members to stay below deck, and while being rocked by the swell reflected from the nearby cliffs of two-pyroxene diorite at Verdens Begyndelse ("Beginning of the World" - see Medd. am Gr0nland 123, plate 1), this small group of tectonic "officials" decided to initiate the production of a book to be entitled "Precambrian Tectonics Illustrated". Needless to say, a copy of the magnificent book " Geology of Greenland", published three years earlier by the Geological Survey of Greenland, was lying in front of us on the oak table in the small crowded cabin. H. H. Read once said: "Map it my boy and it will all come out". But don't forget what James Gilluly added: "Most exposures provide answers only to questions that are put to them". With this in mind - "bon appetit".

Book Physical Oceanography of the Baltic Sea

Download or read book Physical Oceanography of the Baltic Sea written by Matti Leppäranta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-20 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Baltic Sea oceanographic research community is wide and the research history is over 100 years old. Nevertheless, there is still no single, coherent book on the physical oceanography of the Baltic Sea as a whole. There is a strong need for such a book, coming from working oceanographers as well as the university teaching programmes in advanced undergraduate to graduate levels. In the regional conference series in physical oceanography (Baltic Sea Science Conference, Baltic Sea Oceanographers' conference, Baltex-conferences) about 500 scientists take part regularly. Even more scientists work in the fields of marine biology, chemistry and the environment, and they need information on the physics of the Baltic Sea as well. There are nine countries bordering on the Baltic Sea and five more in the runoff area. The Baltic Sea as a source of fish, means of transportation and leisure activities is highly important to the regional society. In the runoff area there are a total of 85 million people. Research and protection strategies need to be developed, as the Baltic Sea is probably the most polluted sea in the world. Since the Baltic Sea has become an inner sea of the EU (apart from small shore parts of Russia in Petersburg and Kaliningrad), it is anticipated that the importance of the region will consequently rise. The book will arouse interest among students, scientists and decision makers involved with the Baltic problems. It will also give important background information for those working with biogeochemical processes in the Baltic Sea, because the physical forcing for those processes is of vital importance.

Book Mechanisms of Activity and Unrest at Large Calderas

Download or read book Mechanisms of Activity and Unrest at Large Calderas written by Claudia Troise and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2006 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large caldera collapses represent catastrophic natural events, second only to large meteoritic impacts. In addition, some calderas are densely populated, making the risk extreme, even for moderate eruptions. Understanding caldera mechanisms, unrest and the danger of eruption is therefore a crucial challenge for Earth sciences. Several key features of caldera behaviour have yet to be fully understood. Through a combination of case studies and theoretical modelling, the following topics are addressed in this volume: the conditions required to produce and to release large volumes of magma erupted during caldera formation; how magmatic feeding systems evolve before and after a caldera has formed; the processes that limit the behaviour of precursors to eruptions; how pre-eruptive precursors can be distinguished from those that drive unrest without an eruption; and given that post-collapse eruptions may occur across a wide area, the optimum procedures for designing hazard maps and mitigation strategies.
