Book excerpt: The final battle of the War of 1812 results in a surprising victory for the outnumbered American defenders at the Rodriguez Canal east of New Orleans. The American command dispatches a patrol from its position in the Mississippi Delta. Its mission is to transport a group of severly wounded Scottish soldiers to a United States army field hospital for urgently needed medical care. The patrol, led by a free-black sergeant from the New Orleans militia, encounters problems along the trail. When the men are borne into an Acadian settlement in central Louisiana on one of the first experimental steam carriages, an irresistible tide of vengence and revenge is unleashed. The mystical forces conjured by a voodoo priestess and a Choctaw Indian chief reach even into the twentieth century. There they combine with modern conspiracy and murder to draw an attorney and newspaper reporter into the age-old enmity between the English and French. The deadly curse culminates on the same graveyard hill where it began.

Book excerpt: After a terrifying nightmare, Joseph Paul Robinson wakes in the subway. But stations are named after places on the Monopoly board, all the station exits are blocked, and he's lost his memory. Eventually, he discovers that he is dead. After a bittersweet reunion with his deceased parents, he is left on his own in the Spiritual-Material Afterlife Rapid Transit (SMART) system to find his way to redemption or damnation. While following Joe, we meet others in this complex, fascinating and funny morality tale. There is Luscious "Mack" Brown, the sharecropper, facing a lynch mob in 1931. There is Tony Santini, the Korean War soldier facing his consequences in 1951. There is Effie Parker, the pure-hearted SMART Guide who died rescuing children from a fire in 1870. And there is Mortese the Stalker, a Demon seeking all the souls he can get. In this, his first novel, author Gerald Davis takes us on a ride into an imaginative exploration of the afterlife, inspired by modern accounts of near-death experiences. It is a highly readable parable addressing classic themes of good against evil, of faith, social responsibility, and the decline of American values.

Book A Father s Love

Download or read book A Father s Love written by Dante Keith and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Father's Love is a true story of the author's long and treacherous journey, which by all accounts, should have simply ended in his unheralded death, imprisonment, insanity, or all of the above. But there is a different ending because this story is also a testimony of God's love""the Father's love""and just some of the miracles he did on behalf of a young man who had no clue as to the true nature and character of God. The story begins with the author's struggles in an abusive home environment mixed in with the strict, legalistic teachings of his church. He enters his teen years with a twisted, unrealistic perspective of God, viewing him as a cruel, merciless ogre intent on damning him to hell. The author recounts his bout with mental illness, and the final incident of parental abuse, which pushed him over the edge where he gave up all hope. Resigning himself to hell, the author vows never to end up there for pettiness and wastes no time in pursuing a life of worldly pleasure, taking to the streets and highways. But he is soon blindsided, falling in love with a girl who changed his mind, his heart, and his world forever. He shares his failure at intimate relationship and the radical effect his loss has on his life. Estranged from his family, he faces life alone and lonely, sure that God is indifferent to his pain, which finally drives him back to the highway, where he lives as a gypsy and a criminal. Desperate to outrun his pain and regain the love he lost, he runs thousands of miles rolling the dice with his life again and again. Just when it seems he has finally succeeded in destroying himself, the unthinkable happens""God begins to reveal himself and then another journey begins, that of experiencing the Father's love.

Book excerpt: This is the first critical biography to explore John Fogerty's life and his music. When inducting Creedence Clearwater Revival into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, Bruce Springsteen referred to the "music’s power and its simplicity... [its] beauty and poetry and a sense of the darkness of events and of history, of an American tradition shot through with pride, fear, and paranoia." This book investigates those aspects and more of Fogerty’s songs and life: his Americanism, his determined individualism, and unyielding musical vision which led to conflicts with his band, isolation from his family, constant legal battles, and some of the greatest songs of the 20th century.

Book excerpt: Finding Fogerty: Interdisciplinary Readings of John Fogerty and Creedence Clearwater Revival, edited by Thomas M. Kitts, begins to correct the scholarly neglect of John Fogerty, one of America’s great songwriters, one of the rock era’s great vocalists, and one of its underrated guitarists and producers. This essential collection pulls together scholars from a wide range of disciplines and approaches to assess Fogerty’s fifty-year career and to argue for his musical and cultural significance. The composer of American classics like “Proud Mary,” “Fortunate Son,” “Green River,” “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” and “Centerfield,” Fogerty first achieved commercial success with the release of Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1968. As the band’s songwriter, lead singer, lead guitarist, and producer, Fogerty led CCR in a blistering output of 10 top-ten singles and seven gold albums before disbanding CCR in 1972. Divided into four sections (“Born on the Bayou,” “Run Through the Jungle,” “Centerfield, ”and “Keep on Chooglin’”), Finding Fogerty investigates Fogerty’s songs, life, and legacy, and stands as a tribute to one of America’s most treasured musical legends.

Book Small Venues

Download or read book Small Venues written by Sam Whiting and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-08-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the history of popular music, the careers of many culturally significant artists and groups began on the small stages of local bars clubs, pubs, and discotheques. When the stories of The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and the New York punk hardcore and post punk scenes are told, iconic venues such as The Cavern, The Marquee and CBGB's serve as the settings of their early chapters Small live music venues such as these are pivotal in the narratives and history of popular music. However, very few of them survive. This book focusses on the role of small live music venues as incubators for emerging talent and social hubs for music scene participants. Such venues are grassroots spaces of cultural labor and production that often struggle with issues of financial precarity yet are fundamental to the live music ecology of a city, acting both as platforms for emergent performers and spaces of sociality for local music scenes.

Book excerpt: A collection of lyrics and autobiographical commentary by singer Mark Lanegan, with a preface by John Cale and a foreword by Moby With a voice that Pitchfork has called "as scratchy as a three-day beard yet as supple and pliable as moccasin leather," former Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age vocalist Mark Lanegan draws frequent comparisons to masters like Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen. Lanegan's voice is one of the most distinct and recognizable in rock, but his talents aren't limited to his vocal skills. Lanegan's lyrics are on par with the best of them, exploring with Blake-like insight the stark and scorched emotional terrain that exists somewhere beyond sadness, addiction, trauma, and spiritual longing. With a body of work that now includes seven albums with the Screaming Trees, eleven acclaimed solo albums, three albums of duets with Belle and Sebastian's Isobel Campbell (including the Mercury Prize-shortlisted Ballad of the Broken Seas), and collaborative albums and singles with the likes of Queens of the Stone Age, Moby, Soulsavers, Twilight Singers, and countless others, Mark Lanegan occupies a singular space in rock music. Now, for the first time ever, the reclusive singer presents a comprehensive look at his lyrics, the stories behind them, and the making of his albums. I Am the Wolf is a rare and candid glimpse into the inner workings and creative process of a legend.

Book launches are rarely exciting. The odd murder tends to spice things up a bit, though.

When famous novelist Rupert Pearson's PA doesn't turn up for his book launch at the Freemason's Arms, he's more annoyed than upset. He certainly didn't expect someone to find her face-down in a ditch.

For Kempston Hardwick, dead PAs are business as usual. Unfortunately. At least there are lots of excuses to visit the pub.

But why had she made so many enemies? Why are the police so keen to fit up an innocent man? And where did Doug's pickled onions go?

Book Dreams in French Literature

Download or read book Dreams in French Literature written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-10-16 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nine essays in this volume deal with several well known French authors through the ages - for example Descartes, Voltaire, Mme de Staël, Nerval, Verlaine - and explore the problematic relationship between dreams and literature. Generally speaking, contributors are interested in the production of literary meaning. How does various dream material, ranging from the traditional dream to visions and hallucinations and day dreams, come to be? And how is the dream image transformed into discourse? What exactly is the relationship between dream and narrative? Each essay focuses on a different author and different period, ranging from the Middle Ages to the late nineteenth-century, but also takes a unique critical and theoretical approach. What the contributors have in common, though, is an analytical, sensemaking strategy that characterizes the interpretation of dreams through the ages, from ancients such as Artemidorus and Cicero to modern thinkers such as Freud. Most of the texts studied here, from the Chanson de Roland to Chateaubriand's Mémoires d'outre-tombe, lend themselves to this type of approach because they promote narrative unity. So too do Voltaire, Mme de Staël, Nerval and Verlaine. Many if not most texts, however, in the end, turn out to be not quite so tightly-knit as one may have supposed at first and, in the case of Agrippa d'Aubigné and Descartes, the reader is in for several surprises when the normal course of events leading from dream to text, from signifier to signified, is interrupted and subverted.

Book The Grateful Dead FAQ

Download or read book The Grateful Dead FAQ written by Tony Sclafani and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (FAQ). The Grateful Dead rose out of San Francisco's '60s underground rock scene with an unprecedented sound and image. Its members, steeped in rock, folk, classical, and blues; their instrumental prowess; and their refusal to bow to commercial conventions helped originate jam band music. Unapologetic in its advocacy of drug use as a means toward mind expansion, the Dead helped catapult psychedelic music. After performing at the Monterey International Pop Festival and Woodstock, the group became iconic without ever scoring a hit single. A large, devoted fan base "Deadheads" began to follow the band everywhere. The group suffered a tragedy when bandleader Jerry Garcia slipped into a coma in 1986, but returned the next year with a top-selling album and surprise hit single, "Touch of Grey." By 1993, the Dead was the top-grossing live act in the United States. The band ended when Garcia died in 1995, but the music lives on with a stream of live releases. In Grateful Dead FAQ , Tony Sclafani examines the band's impact and influence on rock music and pop culture. This book ventures into unexplored areas and features a host of rare images, making it a must-have for both Deadheads and casual fans.
