Download or read book Countless Blessings written by Barbara M. Cooper and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of pregnancy and childbirth customs in Niger, and how it has both a high fertility rate and high rates of maternal and infant mortality. How do women in Niger experience pregnancy and childbirth differently from women in the United States or Europe? Barbara M. Cooper sets out to understand childbirth in a country with the world’s highest fertility rate and an alarmingly high rate of maternal and infant mortality. Cooper shows how the environment, slavery and abolition, French military rule, and the rapid expansion of Islam have all influenced childbirth and fertility in Niger from the nineteenth century to the present day. She sketches a landscape where fear of infertility generates intense competition between communities, ethnicities, and co-wives and creates a culture where concerns about infertility dominate concerns about overpopulation, where illegitimate children are rejected, and where the education of girls is sacrificed in the name of avoiding shame. Given a medical system poorly adapted to women’s needs, a precarious economy, and a political context where it is impossible to address sexuality openly, Cooper discovers that it is little wonder that pregnancy and birth are a woman’s greatest pride as well as a source of grave danger. “Beautifully written, insightful, and full of empathy. A must read for anyone seeking to understand the damaging consequences of neglecting women’s and infants’ health.” —Johanna Schoen, author of Abortion after Roe “Few experiences are more potent than reproduction. Countless Blessings brilliantly unwinds the full import of this potency, tracing a history of demography, bodily peril, parental joy, and social, religious, and political meaning. Cooper’s tremendous skill and creativity as a scholar enable us to see the political stakes of reproduction, even as they are grounded in the intimacies of embodied experience.” —Julie Livingston, author of Self-Devouring Growth: A Planetary Parable as Told from Southern Africa “Countless Blessings shows how women in Niger and in West Africa have long navigated the various states of social value, personhood, spirituality, and childbirth, and it paints a remarkable picture of how contested and embodied the social and material concerns of childbirth remain for women today.” —Ampson Hagan, Univeristy of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, IJAHS

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disguised Blessings is a book of poetry. This is a compilation of poems that I wrote for about a year when the COVID-9 pandemic started in 2020. The poems will take your imagination to stories of my personal life, friends, and families. They were the people who inspired me and played vital roles in my life. It will also take you back to my youth and the island I grew up in. In my poems I also shared stories of how wonderful it is to love, be loved, and the hurtful experience of being rejected. A lot of the poetry I wrote were inspired by nature and its beauty that surrounds me. I saw God's glory through His creation and heard His voice and felt His presence. Disguised Blessings are my unexpected gifts that I personally received amid the pandemic. Being a registered nurse working in the frontline is unnerving. God had protected and shielded me from COVID-19 so I could continue serving in His ministry of healing. God had blessed me with talents that I was able to use when I most needed them to keep myself above all chaos from the pandemic. I was able to do many to maintain a healthy mind and spirit. Best of all, he endowed me with special and beautiful thoughts that flowed into rhythmic words of poetry. I'm inviting you to emerge into the pages of this book and be inspired!

Book Laughter Tears

Download or read book Laughter Tears written by Irene Powell and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2006-07-30 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irene Powell's new book "Laughter and Tears" will inspire readers. New biography of the life of a wartime civilian hero and lifetime friend is certain to affect readers. LIVERPOOL, England -- Despite the seeming best efforts of generations, poverty, famine and war persist in the world. One has only to turn on the nightly news or read the headlines to know this is true. In her new book, "Laughter and Tears: Johanna's Story", debut author Irene Powell presents the inspiring story of her friend, Johanna, who survived the German occupation of Holland during World War II, then worked in German refugee camps before settling in England and training as a nurse and midwife. "Johanna was a really down-to-earth person, " Irene writes, "with no special attributes other than a strong determination to live life to the fullest, no matter what life dealt to her and to help and care for others." The narrative reveals a woman who did just those things, helping others and making herself and example for anyone who wishes to live a life of value. An excerpt from "Laughter and Tears": "We were all starving. People were dying from hunger. My sister and I left home in search for food. We had no money or valuables with which to barter so took some of dad's shaving soap hoping someone would exchange it for a little food. We had been walking for thirteen hours. Our feet were blistered, we were cold, tired and hungry. We planned to knock on one more door. If that failed we would have to find shelter under a tree for the night and try again tomorrow." Though Johanna died in 2011, just before her 85th birthday, her legacy and her memory live on in the people she helped, friends she made and lives she changed.
