Book Building Cities that Work

Download or read book Building Cities that Work written by Edmund P. Fowler and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1993 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1945, North Americans have spent hundreds of billions of dollars on urban development, literally transforming the landscape of the continent. This development has been disastrous, Edmund Fowler maintains, because it is inordinately expensive, destructive of the environment, and disruptive of healthy social life and authentic politics. Revealing the connections between our basic cultural beliefs and why we build the way we do, he stresses that to build cities that work we must become aware of how our personal choices contribute to the form of the built environment.

Book Variations on a Theme Park

Download or read book Variations on a Theme Park written by Michael Sorkin and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 1992-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's cities are being rapidly transformed by a sinister and homogenous design. A new Kind of urbanism--manipulative, dispersed, and hostile to traditional public space--is emerging both at the heart and at the edge of town in megamalls, corporate enclaves, gentrified zones, and psuedo-historic marketplaces. If anything can be described as a paradigm for these places, it's the theme park, an apparently benign environment in which all is structured to achieve maximum control and in which the idea of authentic interaction among citizens has been thoroughly purged. In this bold collection, eight of our leading urbanists and architectural critics explore the emblematic sites of this new cityscape--from Silicon Valley to Epcot Center, South Street Seaport to downtown Los Angeles--and reveal their disturbing implications for American public life.

Book The Canadian Modernists Meet

Download or read book The Canadian Modernists Meet written by Dean Irvine and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2005-07-12 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canadian Modernists Meet is a collection of new critical essays on major and rediscovered Canadian writers of the early to mid-twentieth century. F.R. Scott's well-known poem 'The Canadian Authors Meet' sets the theme for the volume: a revisiting of English Canada's formative movements in modernist poetry, fiction, and drama. As did Scott's poem, Dean Irvine's collection raises questions - about modernism and antimodernism, nationalism and antinationalism, gender and class, originality and influence - that remain central to contemporary research on early to mid-twentieth-century English Canadian literature. The Canadian Modernists Meetis the first collection of its kind: a gathering of texts by literary critics, textual editors, biographers, literary historians, and art historians whose collective research contributes to the study of modernism in Canada. The collection stages a major reassessment of the origins and development of modernist literature in Canada, its relationship to international modernist literature, its regional variations, its gender and class inflections, and its connections to visual art, architecture, and film. It presents a range of scholarly perspectives, drawing upon the multidisciplinarity that characterizes the international field of modernist studies.

Download or read book Photogenic Montreal written by Martha Langford and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2021-12-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The agency of photographs is a recurrent concern within the context of the city. Whether found in architectural records, social documentary, photojournalism, or artistic practice, photographic objects are embedded in urban contestation, aesthetically charged by artists, reinserted into social histories, and mobilized to imagine a future city. Photogenic Montreal takes a question initially posed by heritage debates – what does photography preserve? – and creates a rich conversation about the agency of the human actors before and behind the camera, and of the medium itself. The interplay of archives and activisms structures the book. Photographs that appear to be sealed off in newspapers, storage rooms, or archives accrue new meaning when they cross the threshold back into social spaces and circulate anew. It is through the reactivation of archival photographs that submerged traces of urban experience are discovered, and alternate histories of Montreal can be recounted. Multiple forms of activism and artistic expression complement this archival work. Beginning in the 1960s, community-minded and heritage groups responded to the tensions arising from urban reconstruction, gentrification, and the erasure of neighbourhoods; this activism also left its photographic traces. Attentive to the still-changing face of the city’s architecture, neighbourhoods, and street life, Photogenic Montreal participates in debates about who the city belongs to, who speaks on its behalf, and how to picture its past and present.

Book A City with a Difference

Download or read book A City with a Difference written by Timothy Lloyd Thomas and published by Dossier Quebec Series. This book was released on 1997 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Montreal Citizen's Movement, a municipal party created in 1974, was a broad coalition which included union members, Parti Québécois militants, members of the Quebec wing of the New Democratic Party, independent radicals, and a significant number of anglophone intellectuals. In its ten years in opposition (1974-1984), and its two terms in power (ending in 1995), the Montreal Citizen's Movement had a powerful influence on both the policy and process of Montreal's municipal government.A City With a Difference describes how electoral pragmatists and ideologically-driven social activists co-existed within the same political structure of what theorist Herbert Kitschelt calls a left-libertarian party. From the years in opposition to the years in power, the author chronicles the MCM's triumphs, failures, conflicts, and compromises.
