Book Grappling With The Gray

Download or read book Grappling With The Gray written by Yonason Goldson and published by Business Expert Press. This book was released on 2020-10-02 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grappling with the Gray offers a collection of case studies, real and hypothetical, intended to ignite thoughtful consideration of ethical dilemmas in our personal and professional lives. Simply stated, a business culture driven by profits at the expense of values is destined to fail. Research shows that companies ranked highest for ethics grow faster than companies that aren’t. Work environments are more pleasant. Employees are more satisfied, engaged, loyal, passionate, and productive. Turnover costs are less. Brand image shines. Cultivating a culture of ethics is the time-tested formula for spectacular success. The thought questions and discussions that follow each case study offer the opportunity to develop the ethical mindset that enables us to see the bigger picture, engage in civil debate, and work effectively toward consensus. Raising our ethical awareness ultimately produces a culture where compliance laws take care of themselves and a workforce that feels empowered, appreciated, and invested in a common vision that accelerates success.

Book excerpt: It's time for America to move beyond zoning, argues city planner M. Nolan Gray in Arbitrary Lines: How Zoning Broke the American City and How to Fix It. With lively explanations, Gray shows why zoning abolition is a necessary--if not sufficient--condition for building more affordable, vibrant, equitable, and sustainable cities. Gray lays the groundwork for this ambitious cause by clearing up common misconceptions about how American cities regulate growth and examining four contemporary critiques of zoning (its role in increasing housing costs, restricting growth in our most productive cities, institutionalizing racial and economic segregation, and mandating sprawl). He sets out some of the efforts currently underway to reform zoning and charts how land-use regulation might work in the post-zoning American city. Arbitrary Lines is an invitation to rethink the rules that will continue to shape American life--where we may live or work, who we may encounter, how we may travel. If the task seems daunting, the good news is that we have nowhere to go but up

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Jack Livingston Describes the Book"Clearing out the high school with a smoke bomb prank in our senior year, raising a family of pigs in a village yard, saving a drowning man in Singapore, and overcoming the trauma of a childhood abduction are part of my friend, Chris Kelley's past. I knew little about them. To me, Chris was the guy who was always up for doing two fun things in one day (sometimes three). When Chris was diagnosed with Pick's disease (a rare type of dementia) in his mid-fifties, it signaled the end to what we had taken for granted. It changed our friendship. No longer would I follow him on epic adventures he planned. These days, I take him for hikes, hold both sides of our conversations, and help him across a two-foot stream. But because I didn't want to forget the times we'd had together, I started to write, and as a result found out there was more to my friend. In A Lot Like Fun -- Only Different I share incredible stories of our improbable friendship where Chris met life head on while I asked, "Are you sure we want to do this?" It contains dozens of stories and photos from our past that contrast 'current day' Chris, diminished by Pick's, with the Chris I knew so well. No longer are we barreling down the 219 to ski or mountain bike the Bent Rim Trail, and celebrating with a 'couple tree' beers. We aren't breaking trails with our snowshoes in the Adirondack High Peaks or cruising through Appalachia on the way to a 24-hour mountain bike race. We still get together every week. And I look forward to those times. It's fun -- only different. Chris greets me with a smile and a hearty laugh. He doesn't speak, but I know if he could, he'd tell me, 'Thanks for coming out, Jack. Today was great.' And then it breaks my heart when he stands next to my car, wanting to ride home with me and I have to tell him, 'Chris, you're riding with your brother. I'll see you next week, okay buddy.' And I hear his words of the past. 'Good deal.'"

Book Reconsidering American Civil Military Relations

Download or read book Reconsidering American Civil Military Relations written by Lionel Beehner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-02 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores contemporary civil-military relations in the United States. Much of the canonical literature on civil-military relations was either written during or references the Cold War, while other major research focuses on the post-Cold War era, or the first decade of the twenty-first century. A great deal has changed since then. This book considers the implications for civil-military relations of many of these changes. Specifically, it focuses on factors such as breakdowns in democratic and civil-military norms and conventions; intensifying partisanship and deepening political divisions in American society; as well as new technology and the evolving character of armed conflict. Chapters are organized around the principal actors in civil-military relations, and the book includes sections on the military, civilian leadership, and the public. It explores the roles and obligations of each. The book also examines how changes in contemporary armed conflict influence civil-military relations. Chapters in this section examine the cyber domain, grey zone operations, asymmetric warfare and emerging technology. The book thus brings the study of civil-military relations into the contemporary era, in which new geopolitical realities and the changing character of armed conflict combine with domestic political tensions to test, if not potentially redefine, those relations.

Book Managing in the Gray

Download or read book Managing in the Gray written by Joseph L. Badaracco Jr. and published by Harvard Business Review Press. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Resolve the Really Hard Problems Every manager makes tough calls—it comes with the job. And the hardest decisions are the “gray areas”—situations where you and your team have worked hard to find an answer, you’ve done the best analysis you can, and you still don’t know what to do. But you have to make a decision. You have to choose, commit, act, and live with the consequences and persuade others to follow your lead. Gray areas test your skills as a manager, your judgment, and even your humanity. How do you get these decisions right? In Managing in the Gray, Joseph Badaracco offers a powerful, practical, and even radical way to resolve these problems. Picking up where conventional tools of analysis leave off, this book provides tools for judgment in the form of five revealing questions. Asking yourself these five questions provides a simple yet profound way to broaden your thinking, sharpen your judgment, and develop a fresh perspective. What makes these questions so valuable is that they have truly stood the test of time—they’ve guided countless men and women, across many centuries and cultures, to resolve the hardest questions of work, responsibility, and life. You can use the five-question framework on your own or with others on your team to help you cut through complexities, understand critical trade-offs, and develop workable solutions for even the grayest issues.

Book Catherine and the Captain

Download or read book Catherine and the Captain written by Margaret Lake and published by Jobree Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-14 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catherine’s lips tightened at the tone of Anne’s voice. She was speaking to her as if she were a servant. But she said nothing, only turned and walked out the door after patting Anne reassuringly on the shoulder. She hurried down the stairs, not even bothering to tuck her hair back into place. She had left it unbound, not expecting visitors, and when she entered the courtyard, it tumbled about her shoulders in an unruly cloud of sable. It seemed that Catherine became aware of Fallon at the same time he looked up to see her walking across the courtyard. She could see his eyes flick over her from head to toe and she thought she saw a glimmer of distaste pass over his features. Hell and damnation. The man always seems to have me at a disadvantage, Catherine thought furiously. I haven’t used vulgar language, since that day at Dilham and just the sight of him has me swearing like a soldier. At that moment, Fallon removed his helm, shaking his long, black hair loose. It is him! Catherine screamed in her mind, not sure that she had not screamed out loud. The thought of Dilham, coupled with his actions, made the connection in her mind, and she knew without a doubt that Fallon was the lion of her nightmares. Kyle was watching Catherine intently. First, she blushed to the roots of her hair. Then she stopped dead in her tracks and her face turned a deathly white. Afraid that she was about to swoon, he started toward her, hoping to reach her before she fell to the ground and injured herself. Seeing Kyle bearing down on her, Catherine's mind went blank with horror and she fainted straight into his arms.

Book excerpt: From Harper L. Woods, comes The Cursed, the next chapter in her Coven of Bones series--a pulse-pounding romantasy where The Magicians meets Gothikana. Betrayal. He was the deception waiting in the night; the truth I never saw coming. After a lifetime of manipulation, I finally learned the truth. I was his puppet—even if I never saw my strings. Even knowing how deep his betrayal runs, I can’t shake the undeniable connection between Gray and I—the way a single glance from him sets my soul on fire. We are not the same. We're enemies, poised to battle for the future of the very thing I’d wanted to destroy. With the Covenant gone, the revenge I thought I wanted is no longer my priority. The witches that remain played no role in my aunt’s death, and the only person standing in the way of righting those wrongs is the very man determined to keep me in his bed. But the remaining members of the Coven will never forgive me for the role I played in their demise and subjugation, and the worst part of all is that I can’t even blame them for it. I’d been naive, believing my own delusions of grandeur when destiny clearly had other plans for me. Plans that had been set in motion centuries before my birth. But even that had been a lie, and now it is my duty to do everything in my power to undo it. To protect my Coven from my husband’s hatred—no matter what the cost.
