They appear in reports, memos, presentations to colleagues or clients, annual reports, sales brochures, and the pages of business magazines and newspapers. They are even part of the popular image of business; the executives pictured in cartoons frequently sit in front of large wall charts of sales or profits. Moreover, microcomputers with graphics software promise to make graphs even more common by making graphs in minutes that an art room would have taken hours to produce. As powerful tools for communicating, analyzing, and monitoring the massive amounts of data managers deal with daily, graphs are here to stay. Although we take them for granted now, graphs and charts appeared on the managerial scene relatively recently. They have served as managerial tools only since the very end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth. As businesses grew and evolved structurally during those years, the managers who came to manage the enterprises needed better ways of handling larger quantities of data. At the same time, the capabilities of graphics were just beginning to be understood beyond circles of statisticians. It is a powerful and flexible tool which has been and is being thoroughly researched at the abstract level. Many useful theorems dealing with graphs exist. They need to be put to use. The hypothesis of this paper is that if graph theory is compared to the methods currently being used by the U.S. Army in solving several managerial problems, it will become apparent that graph theory is superior. Following a brief introduction to graph theory, three typical managerial problems which face in the U.S. Army are investigated. They are a scheduling problem, a facility layout problem, and a transportation problem. The three problems are solved using techniques which are typical of those used by U.S. Army staffs. They are then solved using a graph theoretic approach. Finally, comparisons of the two techniques are made for each problem.
