Book Fire and Smoke Simulator FSSIM Version 1 User s Guide

Download or read book Fire and Smoke Simulator FSSIM Version 1 User s Guide written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several computational tools exist for examining fire effects that can be applied to a ship and its crew. Hand calculations can be used to examine simple scenarios in single compartments. Zone models are also suitable for more complex, time-dependent scenarios involving multiple compartments and levels, but stability can be a problem for multilevel scenarios, scenarios with Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, and for post-flashover conditions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models can yield detailed information about temperatures, heat fluxes, and species concentrations; however, the time penalty of this approach currently makes using CFD unfeasible for long periods of real time or large computational domains. Another class of models has traditionally played supporting roles in fire modeling. This class is constituted by a variety of network models, which are used for ventilation systems in buildings or fluid flow in piping networks. These models lack specific physics required for fire modeling. Therefore, to meet the computational speed and algorithm requirements, it was decided to develop Fire and Smoke Simulator (FSSIM) as a network fire model. This document (User's Guide) discusses creation of FSSIM input files, including guidance in transforming a prototype structure to a network representation, and explains the available outputs.

Book excerpt: There currently exists a number of computational tools for examining the effects of a fire that can be applied to a ship and its crew. One could use hand calculations for examining simple scenarios in single compartments. Simple rules can be used to extend this approach to multiple compartments. Zone models are suitable for examining somewhat more complex, time-dependent scenarios involving multiple compartments and levels, but stability can be a problem for multi-level scenarios with Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, and for post- flashover conditions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models can yield detailed information about temperatures, heat fluxes, and species concentrations; however, the time penalty of this approach currently makes using CFD unfeasible for long periods of real time or large computational domains. There is another class of models that have traditionally played supporting roles in fire modeling. This class is constituted by a variety of network models, which are used for ventilation systems in buildings or fluid flow in piping networks. These models, however, lack specific physics required for fire modeling. To meet the computational speed and algorithm requirements, it was decided to develop Fire and Smoke Simulator (FSSIM) as a network fire model. This document (Theory Manual) describes the equations solved, and the solution algorithm for the heat and mass transfer along with the equations and algorithms for FSSlM sub-models.

Book User s Guide for Smokeview Version 5 a Tool for Visualizing Fire Dynamics Simulation Data NIST SP 1017 1

Download or read book User s Guide for Smokeview Version 5 a Tool for Visualizing Fire Dynamics Simulation Data NIST SP 1017 1 written by nist and published by . This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smokeview is a software tool designed to visualize numericalcalculations generated by fire models such as the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of fire-driven fluid flow or CFAST, a zone fire model. Smokeview visualizes smoke and other attributes of the fire using traditional scientific methods such as displaying tracer particle flow, 2D or 3D shaded contours of gas flow data such as temperature and flowvectors showing flow direction and magnitude. Smokeview also visualizes fire attributes realistically so that one can experience the fire. This is done by displaying a series of partially transparent planes where the transparencies in each plane (at each grid node) are determined from soot densities computed by FDS. Smokeview also visualizes static data at particular times again using 2Dor 3D contours of data such as temperature and flow vectors showing flow direction and magnitude. Smokeview and associated documentation for Windows, Linux and Mac/OSX may be downloaded from the web site http://fire . nist .gov/smokeview at no cost.

Book AISIM Automated Interactive Simulation Modeling System VAX Version Training Manual

Download or read book AISIM Automated Interactive Simulation Modeling System VAX Version Training Manual written by S. Kneeburg and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This training manual presupposes virtually no programming experience and is intended to provide step by step information necessary to begin using AISIM as hosted on a VAX 11/780. It is not intended as a complete account of the system, and many topics covered in the companion AISIM User's Manual are covered here in less detail, or not at all. For further details on the operation of AISIM or on the kind of simulation AISIM is adapted to, the reader is referred to the more detailed AISIM User's Manual. This manual consists of seven sections. This first section provides a brief overview of AISIM and its main concepts. Sections 2, 3, and 4 concern the Design User Interface (DUI), i.e., that part of AISIM in which models are created. Section 5 describes the complete construction of a simple model. Section 6 turns to the use of the Analysis User Interface--the part of AISIM where simulation and analysis occur--using the model developed in Section 5 as an example. Finally, Chapter 7 will document the creation, simulation and analysis of a more complex system.

Book Modelling Environmental Dynamics

Download or read book Modelling Environmental Dynamics written by Martin Paegelow and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-07-16 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modelling environmental dynamics is critical to understanding and predicting the evolution of the environment in response to the large number of influences including urbanisation, climate change and deforestation. Simulation and modelling provide support for decision making in environmental management. The first chapter introduces terminology and provides an overview of methodological modelling approaches which may be applied to environmental and complex dynamics. Based on this introduction this book illustrates various models applied to a large variety of themes: deforestation in tropical regions, fire risk, natural reforestation in European mountains, agriculture, biodiversity, urbanism, climate change and land management for decision support, etc. These case studies, provided by a large international spectrum of researchers and presented in a uniform structure, focus particularly on methods and model validation so that this book is not only aimed at researchers and graduates but also at professionals.

  • Pages : 8 pages

Download or read book Fire Modelling written by G. Cox and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Digest explains the methodologies being used for the computer simulation of fire. It focuses on models of the fire itself: the essentially gas phase phenomenon at the heart of any fire simulation. Numerical modelling has become increasingly attractive for those wishing to fully exploit the freedoms to achieve safe, cost effective design offered by performance based regulation. This new edition of Digest 367 supersedes the version published in 1991. It explains fire growth and spread, and the two basic types of computer simulation methodologies. These are the zonal models, and the more universal field models that use the specialist discipline of computational fluid dynamics. Two types of field model are described which employ alternative approaches using Reynolds Averaged and Large Eddy methodologies to capture the influences of turbulence. An example shows the BRE CRISP model applied to the problem of smoke spread through a two storey theatre and the evacuation of the occupants.

Book DoD Digital Modernization Strategy

Download or read book DoD Digital Modernization Strategy written by Department of Defense and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-12 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global threat landscape is constantly evolving and remaining competitive and modernizing our digital environment for great power competition is imperative for the Department of Defense. We must act now to secure our future. This Digital Modernization Strategy is the cornerstone for advancing our digital environment to afford the Joint Force a competitive advantage in the modern battlespace. Our approach is simple. We will increase technological capabilities across the Department and strengthen overall adoption of enterprise systems to expand the competitive space in the digital arena. We will achieve this through four strategic initiatives: innovation for advantage, optimization, resilient cybersecurity, and cultivation of talent. The Digital Modernization Strategy provides a roadmap to support implementation of the National Defense Strategy lines of effort through the lens of cloud, artificial intelligence, command, control and communications and cybersecurity. This approach will enable increased lethality for the Joint warfighter, empower new partnerships that will drive mission success, and implement new reforms enacted to improve capabilities across the information enterprise. The strategy also highlights two important elements that will create an enduring and outcome driven strategy. First, it articulates an enterprise view of the future where more common foundational technology is delivered across the DoD Components. Secondly, the strategy calls for a Management System that drives outcomes through a metric driven approach, tied to new DoD CIO authorities granted by Congress for both technology budgets and standards. As we modernize our digital environment across the Department, we must recognize now more than ever the importance of collaboration with our industry and academic partners. I expect the senior leaders of our Department, the Services, and the Joint Warfighting community to take the intent and guidance in this strategy and drive implementation to achieve results in support of our mission to Defend the Nation.
