Download or read book The Devil s Backbone written by Bill Wittliff and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last the boy Papa saw of his Momma, she was galloping away on her horse Precious in the saddle her father took from a dead Mexican officer after the Battle of San Jacinto, fleeing from his Daddy, Old Karl, a vicious, tight-fisted horse trader. Momma’s flight sets Papa on a relentless quest to find her that thrusts him and his scrappy little dog Fritz into adventures all across the wild and woolly Hill Country of Central Texas, down to Mexico, and even into the realm of the ghostly “Shimmery People.” In The Devil’s Backbone, master storyteller Bill Wittliff takes readers on an exciting journey through a rough 1880s frontier as full of colorful characters and unexpected turns of events as the great American quest novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Wittliff grew up listening to stories and memories like these in his own family, and in this imaginative novel, they come to vivid life, creating an engrossing story of a Texas Huck Finn that brims with folk wisdom and sly humor. A rogue’s gallery of characters thwart and aid Papa’s path—Old Karl, hell-bent on bringing the boy back to servitude on his farm, and Herman, Papa’s brother who’s got Old Karl’s horse-trading instincts and greed; Calley Pearsall, an enigmatic cowboy with “other Fish to Fry” who might be an outlaw or a trustworthy “o’Amigo”; o’Jeffey, a black seer who talks to the spirits but won’t tell Papa what she has divined about his Momma; Mister Pegleg, a three-legged coyote with whom Papa forms a poignant, nearly tragic friendship; the “Mexkins” Pepe and Peto and their father Old Crecencio, whose longing for his lost family is as strong as Papa’s; and blind Bird, a magical “blue baby” who can’t see with his eyes but who helps other people see what they hold in their hearts. Papa’s adventures draw him ever nearer to a mysterious cave that haunts his dreams—an actual cave that he discovers at last in the canyons of the Devil’s Backbone—but will he find Momma before Old Karl finds him?

Book excerpt: "If you truly want to feel, not just know, what it was like to grow up in the middle of nowhere in the 1930s and '40s, as the son of an alcoholic and abusive father, this fictional story, based on the real-life experiences of the author's father, won't disappoint." --Ric Cox, former Senior Staff Editor, The Reader's Digest Growing up in the time of the depression was hard on all Americans. But doing so under the ruling hand of a violently abusive father was at best, impossible. Will Mueller, his mother, brother and sister were scarred physically and emotionally. His brother and he would wander the river bottoms around where they lived to explore and have great adventures to escape the tyranny of their home life. Will experienced more as a young child than most people do in their whole lives. He met very interesting people, both good and bad. The one thing that kept the family together was his mother's faith. She instilled that faith into her young son. Will's mother was a rock for him and his siblings. Alcohol usually fueled his father's tirades but his father drank all of the time. There was little relief from the violence. As a grown man, Will travels back to where it all began and thanked God that he made it.

Christmas and the New Year are just around the corner; a heavy snowstorm is brewing over the mountains. It would be a miracle if Sandy Claus could find the Alrod farm. There is no money for gifts and yet, the Alrods will have The Best Christmas Ever in the Barn. Five-year-old LeRoy is wearing a path back and forth from the window trying to get a glimpse of the reindeer landing. The oldest Alrod children, Billy Joe, and Sarah Louise are determined to make Christmas as happy as possible for the little ones. The younger children are sneaking to take bites from Sarah Louises poorly decorated cookies hanging on the tree. Many of the popcorn strings have more strings showing than popcorn. Sarah Louise is quite the little Mama caring for the new baby. Papa and the others are helping all they can to make up for Mamas absence. The cast on Papas broken leg makes it difficult for him to get around. Billy Joe is taking care of the animals. Medical bills are piling up; with a mortgage on the farm overdue. There havent been any offerings in the plate at church for Preacher Alrod in several weeks. The Alrods feel blessed to have had such a resourceful Mama. Because of her hard work all summer long, she has a cellar filled with canned foods; her cabinets are lined with homemade jams and jellies. Papa had filled the smokehouse with as much meat as he could. Without those preparations, they would have nothing to eat. Yet they were all looking forward to Night Watch Service on New Years Eve bringing in the New Year of 1940 in the little church on the hill.

Book Act Your Age A Coming of Middle Age Memoir

Download or read book Act Your Age A Coming of Middle Age Memoir written by Priscilla Lindsey Biddle and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Act your age! From her mother's admonition in childhood, a middle ages, twice-married mother of four and a product of the deep south of the seventies makes her way though a meandering inner journey towards a quiet epiphany revealing what her mother's words really mean. This rite of passage at the ungainly age of fifty unfolds through twelve memoir-like narratives that will evoke both laughter and tears. Each chapter is an independent reflection on the dozens of daily anecdotes all of us live each day in the course of growing up and growing older. Reading the narratives may be like going through a shoe box of old photographs you find in the attic, not arrange in any seeming order, but, in total, creating a logic of their own. Memorable characters like Papa, Aunt Norma, Harrison Augustus Turnbull, and Artemesia rise from the narrator's southern Gothic roots. The narrator, nameless Every Woman, prides herself in being an introspective and competent adult, but her naiveté demonstrates that being an adult a really a state of mind, and finding truth is like entertaining company with chipped china. Coping with life's poignant struggles, like disease, old age, suicide, and murder, and its ordinary ones, like child-raising, teaching, pets, and church-going, she seeks sense in the nonsense with humor and with love"--Page 4 of cover.

Book Autobiography of James R Brasel and His Family

Download or read book Autobiography of James R Brasel and His Family written by James R. Brasel and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an autobiography of my life, my wifeaEUR(tm)s life, my family and my daughteraEUR(tm)s family. It represents seventy-six years of delta life, town life, college and career life, and retirement life. Many things happened in those years where I could point out the hand of God in my life. Living on a farm, moving to town, going to college, getting married, finishing college while married, then going to graduate school was a stressful time in my life but an enjoyable time. My wife and I were connected in church during this time, and God was in command of our life. Teaching was my career choice. Three years in high school and forty-two years at Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas. Teaching in Sunday school and training union during the years in West Helena Baptist Church was a plus for my life. My wife was the secretary to the pastors of West Helena Baptist Church for thirty-three years. Our lives were greatly touched by the Lord Jesus Christ. Except for the five years of college life and three years of high school teaching, my life has been in Phillips County Delta in Arkansas. People have changed in the county because of mechanization on the farm. The tenant workers, both black and white, moved to the city to find work or moved to larger cities or out of state to find work. A lot of people think that growing up is up to twenty-one years, but in my life, it has been a continual growth and growing with GodaEUR(tm)s help.
