Book Cigars and Other Passions

Download or read book Cigars and Other Passions written by Hochstein Peter Hochstein and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NOT YOUR EVERYDAY CIGAR MOGUL For more than 60 years, Edgar Cullman was king of the cigar business. Whether it was top-of-the-line cigars like Macanudo and Punch or mass market products like White Owls, Tiparillos and Tijuana Smalls, Edgar influenced what people were puffing, the cigar jingles they were humming, where the cigars came from and how they were made. But Edgar also was - and at the age of 92 still is - more than just a cigar man. He built his career on a smorgasbord of businesses, among them plastics, packaging, potato chips, real estate and the world's bestknown laxative - all the while dealing, bantering and playing with an array of unforgettable characters. You'll learn about his father's whacky hobbies, the uncle who produced nearly all of a generation's best Broadway shows, a "terrifying" prep school headmaster, a Nazi secret agent, a daring pilot who escaped Nazi-occupied Holland and became Edgar's friend, and wise-cracking investment bankers and fellow philanthropists who express their camaraderie by taking one another down a notch. There's also a great love story here - Edgar's courtship and romance with Louise Bloomingdale that began in the 1930s and still goes strong today. CIGARS AND OTHER PASSIONS is about cementing relationships, building wealth, giving back to society and nurturing a marriage and family for more than 70 years, all the while having marvelous fun. "Cigars are my passion and Yale football is a close second!" - Edgar Cullman

Book excerpt: The working title of my novel was Metamorphosis, for transmutation was the vehicle by which I intended to explore the concept of identity. There is abundant research on the effects of nature and nurture and their repercussions on personality development. It is well documented that our genes dictate our traits and that our exposure to experiences in the world mould our attitudes, principles and morals which, in turn, enable the intellect to forge and govern our attitudes and behaviour. Our identities, the perceptions others have of them, and the perception we have of the perception others have of them, carry a huge burden. The weak often struggle with the paranoia of self-identity; the strong appear to glide through life unaffected but often paddle furiously in deep running waters. My thesis embraces a belief in universal self-doubt and the tenuous grasp we have on the nature and structure of our existence and on how we define ourselves, within this context. It explores, by means of control experiment, (transmutation), the reference points of our existence, both the unwarranted pride and abhorrence we recognise in ourselves and, above all, the enigma that is our identity.

Book excerpt: Snowy days and steamy nights ... A saucy Christmas novella to heat up your winter nights! It's Christmas, and also the end of Annie's first few weeks as a chalet girl up in the Swiss mountains. Her boyfriend back home has gone off travelling, and Annie's not exactly feeling full of festive spirit. She really isn't in the mood for the stag party of posh-boys who've just arrived... And sure enough, it isn't long before one of the party - alpha male George - is coming on a little too strong, and making it clear he'd relish getting Annie under the mistletoe, and into his bed. She's almost tempted. George is funny, in a loud, arrogant kind of way, and he's certainly attractive. But Annie is more interested in someone else... the shy, quiet one of the group, who doesn't quite seem to fit in with the rest of the public school boys. Pity he's got a girlfriend - according to George, that is. But the days roll on, and despite the freezing temperatures on the slopes, it's hotting up in the chalet, and Annie is close to boiling point. The question is, does a certain person feel the same way... SANTA BABY is part of Hot Key Books' exclusive new novella list, and one of a series of five available this Christmas. Unlock your naughty side!

This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[Bilefsky] is a brisk, enthusiastic storyteller.… [A] meticulously researched procedural.” —Laura Lippman, New York Times Over Easter weekend 2015, a motley crew of six aging English thieves couldn’t resist coming out of retirement for one last career-topping heist. Though not the smoothest of blokes, these analog crooks in a digital age managed to disable the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit’s high-security alarm system and drill through twenty inches of reinforced concrete, walking away with a stunning haul of at least $21 million in jewels, gold, diamonds, family heirlooms, and cash. Dan Bilefsky draws on unrivaled access to the leading officers on the case at Scotland Yard, as well as notorious figures from London’s shadowy underworld, to offer a gripping account of how these unassuming masterminds nearly pulled off one of the greatest heists of the century.
