Book My Ancestral Voices

Download or read book My Ancestral Voices written by Dr. Joice Christine Bailey Lewis and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-10-25 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Jim Crowe Era in Alabama, African- American children were told by their parents and teachers that they had to be ten times better than their white counterparts, just to stay even. Striving to be ten times better became the standard of behavior for Dr. Joice Christine Bailey Lewis who achieved success with ten times fewer resources and against ten times greater odds. What sustained her during the most diffi cult times was the evidence that her people had survived the hardships faced during two periods of slavery: the enslavement of Africans and the era of Sharecropping. Raised on a sharecropping farm and having no money to go to college, Dr. Lewis, nevertheless found a way to achieve a doctoral degree and experience success as an educator.

Book Wendell Berry Port William Novels Stories The Civil War to World War II LOA 302

Download or read book Wendell Berry Port William Novels Stories The Civil War to World War II LOA 302 written by Wendell Berry and published by Library of America. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 1178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Library of America inaugurates its edition of the complete fiction of one of America's most beloved living writers For more than fifty years, in eight novels and fortytwo short stories, Wendell Berry (b. 1934) has created an indelible portrait of rural America through the lens of Port William, Kentucky, one of the most fully imagined places in American literature. Taken together, these novels and stories form a masterwork of American prose: straightforward, spare, and lyrical. Now, for the first time, in an edition prepared in consultation with the author, Library of America is presenting the complete story of Port William in the order of narrative chronology. This first volume, which spans from the Civil War to World War II, gathers the novels Nathan Coulter (1960, revised 1985), A Place on Earth (1967, revised 1983), A World Lost (1996), and Andy Catlett: Early Travels (2006), along with twenty-three short stories, among them such favorites as “Watch With Me,” “Thicker than Liquor,” and “A Desirable Woman.” It also features a newly researched chronology of Berry’s life and career, a map and a Port William Membership family tree, and helpful notes. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.

Book Getting Here From There

Download or read book Getting Here From There written by Clara Atmane and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to tell your truth from a reflective, honest, nonreactive prospective. Recently retired from a challenging legal career, Clara Atmane was asking the big questions: Who am I now? Why am I here now? Why am I still so lonely? Digging into the first ten years of her life, Atmane uncovered secrets and hidden treasure. Blame and anger turned to wonder and curiosity. Emotions and trauma in those first ten years defined her; yet, her ability to survive and the techniques she developed also came to shape who she had become. In Getting Here From There, Ms. Atmane proves that where you start has no bearing on where you can end up. Born the youngest of six in a farming family, the idyllic backdrop hid a hostile and unwelcoming environment. The messages in those formative years were clear: You are ugly. Your birth caused our mother’s mental illness. If you tell, you will not be believed. There was a dark side to her family. There were villains. Thankfully, there was also survival. Getting Here From There will show you how one woman came to forgive and even thank the people who mistreated her.

Book Sweet Redemption

Download or read book Sweet Redemption written by James Thomas and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Redemption comes to those who may refuse to accept the hand you are dealt as a child. I refused to accept and carry all the bad things that were in my life as child. It took about forty years of standing on the promises of God. Even though I was not perfect, he came through. My past speaks loudly to people that a person can overcome. This is my redemption story, and Jesus has stuck closer than any brother. I have learned that God will use a rejected piece of stone to help strengthen his kingdom. Today people that see me and know me would not have a clue as to what I came out of through Jesus Christ. These redemptive years have rewarded us with a lot joy in our hearts that is beyond words although we gave it a chance through this writing about Sweet Redemption.

Book Through These Eyes

Download or read book Through These Eyes written by T/Sgt. James Lee Hutchinson, Ed.S. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2005-10-05 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of Eighth Air Force bombing missions leaving England to blast targets in Hitler's Third Reich in 1944–45. Each clear day, the skies filled with hundreds of B17 Flying Fortress bombers and their escorts crossing the English Channel toward enemy targets protected by anti-aircraft batteries and German fighters waiting to attack the heavy bombers. The skies over the target were filled with black flak appearing to be so thick you could walk on it! The exploding shells filled the space with flying chunks of iron as bombers started their bomb run on the target. We often could hear the flak pelting our plance like a "buckshot" on a tin roof. This flak would often strike a vital part of the plane or wound a member of the crew! Our waist gunner was wounded on our tenth mission! Some missions we could count hundreds of holes in our plane after we landed safely in England! Bombers receiving a direct hit were blown out of the sky and another ten man aircrew was lost. Planes severely damaged had to drop out of formation and face enemy fighters alone unless some of our P-51 or P-47 escort fighters protected them. Bombers disabled or on fire had no choice but to order the crews to bail out. Airmen who survived the parachute jump were captured and placed into German prisoner of war camps (POW). They were classified as "missing in action". Forty-eight photos, some sixty years old are included in this 350 page book to illustrate the story of the author's childhood in the Great Depression through the great air war of World War II. A description of each mission from a sixty year old diary is included. I think you will enjoy the story of a teenage Radio-Gunner's experiences in the Mighty Eighth Air Force.

Book The Sugar Rush

Download or read book The Sugar Rush written by Peter Gregg and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-07-02 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filled with humor and madcap adventure, The Sugar Rush is the story of two friends with a sweet, golden, syrupy dream, set against the rugged New England wilderness. Trying to shake off the emotions of a recently emptied nest and midlife anxiety, Peter Gregg launches into a strange new chapter—he decides to make maple syrup. A lot of it. After recruiting his best buddy, Bert, and collecting advice from a clique of salty farmers who’ve been sugaring all their lives, Gregg is soon consumed by what maple producers call “the Bug.” He sets out to chase the mythical “five pounder” goal—a lofty syrup production total that’ll put him in league with the pros in Vermont. For the next three months, from January to early April, the two men battle the rugged terrain of a mountain of maples in an Ahab-like quest that eats up their energy, time, and contents of their wallets. Along the way, they learn how to handle dangerous equipment, outrun predatory wildlife and deal with the sped-up seasons brought on by climate change. Out of their struggle, they get something more valuable than the liquid gold they’re cooking: bonds of lasting friendship, a lifeline to a community, and a sense of purpose that remains long after sugaring season is over. At its heart, The Sugar Rush is a deliciously hilarious yet moving account of the crazy journey some people will take in their "pursuit of happiness." Told with humor, gusto, and in the profane vernacular common to the woodsy hinterlands of Upstate New York and Vermont, The Sugar Rush speaks to a desire to set the bar high... and the pancake stack higher.
