Book excerpt: "Is it time?" Jack asked, already knowing the answer. "Yes, Jack, everyone's waiting for you. The hall is bursting at the seams with your friends. And all the networks have their people in place. All that's missing is you." "What will I say, Billy?" "Just go down there and tell them what's on your mind. Just like always." Jack nodded appreciatively, pulled open the door, and walked into the light and noise. Few people among the hundreds of millions that have populated the United States have stood where Jack Dodger stood on that November night. The odds of anyone getting to that place in time were extremely high-even more so for a man like Jack Dodger. After a lifetime of struggles, Jack Dodger wants nothing more than to spend his retirement playing cards with old friends at the barbershop in East Dallas. But everything changes on New Year's Eve when a burglar bursts through the door and takes Jack into the night at gunpoint. Jack returns safely home the next morning but with a secret and a story that will propel him into the spotlight and onto the biggest stage in America: the race for President of the United States. Will Grandpa Jack win the election? And will he survive the process? What will he learn about himself and his country along the way? Join Grandpa Jack on a journey that takes him from coast to coast and from the depth of disillusionment to the pinnacle of pride.

Book Tell Me Again Grampa

Download or read book Tell Me Again Grampa written by Merrill Phillips and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tell Me Again, Grampa is my second book. My first book, My Calling, tells of my personal relationship with Jesus Christ and short articles pertaining to the spiritual aspects of life. It was also published by Trafford Publishing Co. and is available through most bookstores. Many of the stories in Tell Me Again, Grampa are based on experiences as a child growing up in Chatham, Massachusetts-which, at the time, was a fishing village. Other stories are memories from the late 1930s to the early 1940s when we lived in a fishing shanty on Monomoy Point close to the Coast Guard station during the summertime. In addition, some are stories told to me by my grandfather. All are experiences and memories of days when life was simpler, when family shared the work of running a farm and family was the center of our lives. We wandered the fields and explored the woods and waterways. How I wish that my grandchildren had the freedom to experience the outdoors as I did!

Book Bear Down Bear North

    Book Details:
  • Author : Melinda Moustakis
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 2012-10-01
  • ISBN : 0820338931
  • Pages : 175 pages

Download or read book Bear Down Bear North written by Melinda Moustakis and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her debut collection, Melinda Moustakis brings to life a rough-and-tumble family of Alaskan homesteaders through a series of linked stories. Born in Alaska herself to a family with a homesteading legacy, Moustakis examines the near-mythological accounts of the Alaskan wilderness that are her inheritance and probes the question of what it means to live up to larger-than-life expectations for toughness and survival. The characters in Bear Down, Bear North are salt-tongued fishermen, fisherwomen, and hunters, scrappy storytellers who put themselves in the path of destruction—sometimes a harsh snowstorm, sometimes each other—and live to tell the tale. While backtrolling for kings on the Kenai River or filleting the catch of the Halibut Hellion with marvelous speed, these characters recount the gamble they took that didn't pay off, or they expound on how not only does Uncle Too-Soon need a girlfriend, the whole state of Alaska needs a girlfriend. A story like “The Mannequin at Soldotna” takes snapshots: a doctor tends to an injured fisherman, a man covets another man's green fishing lure, a girl is found in the river with a bullet in her head. Another story offers an easy moment with a difficult mother, when she reaches out to touch a breaching whale. This is a book about taking a fishhook in the eye, about drinking cranberry lick and Jippers and smoking Big-Z cigars. This is a book about the one good joke, or the one night lit up with stars, that might get you through the winter.

Book Poems of the Deepwoods Nitwit

Download or read book Poems of the Deepwoods Nitwit written by Ethel Crownover and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-11 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book of stories and poems are taken from the lives of my family and friends. For the most part, they are the subjects that will cheer up those that are sad and think only they have had troubles in this life. I hope it will bring a smile to your face, and sometimes may you also laugh out loud. Many of the poems were written in the wee hours when I awakened with something on my mind that I thought would take a friend's troubles off her mind. Many are written on subjects suggested by those that I worked with. I decided to one day write this book because I think we all should leave a little bit of ourself for future generations to know what life was like when we felt free. You will notice that many of the poems are about freedom, love of country, and the desire to preserve that which our forefathers fought and died for when we claimed our birthright promised to Abraham. Happiness is also what I wish for those of you to find in my simple words of wisdom in the form of verse, If by chance you that read get half as much pleasure reading as I did writing, I feel I have accomplished what I set out to do.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ace Blackman plays the Blues because it had been deeply ingrained into his soul. It was a defining legacy that he shared with Joe Makery his Bass Player. His great grandpa Jack, a tenant farmer in the Tidewater area, was brutally murdered in the presence Ace's grandpa, Johnny, who turned away from playing church music, after witnessing that God didn't stop the racist from murdering Jack. Johnny played the Blues, until a white agent drew him away from home so that he could rape Mary his wife. Johnny came home early, discovered the assailant raping his wife, and got shot between the eyes. Mary and her girls contracted TB. Her only son, Andrew, was a carrier of that disease. Andrew Sr., gave his wife Courtney TB. She died shortly after the birth of her only child, Andrew, Jr., (Ace). Ace's father went mad, and Ace grew up in an orphanage. Ace learned of the murders of two of his Gay Band Members by Bowles Allenson, who had been hired by Mr. P., a dope-trafficker. When he discovered that his music was being used as a dope-pushing cover, he qui playing it. James has written another gut-gripping Novel.
