Book Sundown on Top of the World

Download or read book Sundown on Top of the World written by R.E. Donald and published by Proud Horse Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2016 Whistler Independent Book Award finalist. Former homicide investigator Hunter Rayne follows the white lines northward on the Alaska Highway, but a truck breakdown forces him to take an unscheduled stop in Whitehorse, Yukon, where he had been stationed as a rookie cop. While his Freightliner is awaiting repairs, Hunter and fellow driver, Dan (Sorry) Sorenson, kill time with a side trip to bush Alaska where a chance meeting with a young Alaskan woman awakens his interest in a baffling cold case. A reclusive trapper and his young girlfriend disappeared from a bloody cabin 25 years before, leaving their sled dogs chained outside. Reawakened memories of his past coupled with a recent murder find Hunter back in investigative mode with the blessings of Whitehorse RCMP boss Bartholomew Sam, son of a shaman and Hunter's old friend. He finds himself searching the banks of the mighty Yukon River for a tough old bush woman who may hold the key to more than one bloody death. It's a vivid reminder that the breathtaking beauty of the northern wilderness camouflages its brutal indifference to human life. This is the fourth novel in the Highway Mysteries series of character-driven traditional mysteries in a uniquely North American setting.

Book Postethnic Narrative Criticism

Download or read book Postethnic Narrative Criticism written by Frederick Luis Aldama and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magical realism has become almost synonymous with Latin American fiction, but this way of representing the layered and often contradictory reality of the topsy-turvy, late-capitalist, globalizing world finds equally vivid expression in U.S. multiethnic and British postcolonial literature and film. Writers and filmmakers such as Oscar "Zeta" Acosta, Ana Castillo, Julie Dash, Hanif Kureishi, and Salman Rushdie have made brilliant use of magical realism to articulate the trauma of dislocation and the legacies of colonialism that people of color experience in the postcolonial, multiethnic world. This book seeks to redeem and refine the theory of magical realism in U.S. multiethnic and British postcolonial literature and film. Frederick Aldama engages in theoretically sophisticated readings of Ana Castillo's So Far from God, Oscar "Zeta" Acosta's Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo, Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children, Shame, The Satanic Verses, and The Moor's Last Sigh, Julie Dash's Daughters of the Dust, and Stephen Frears and Hanif Kureishi's Sammy and Rosie Get Laid. Coining the term "magicorealism" to characterize these works, Aldama not only creates a postethnic critical methodology for enlarging the contact zone between the genres of novel, film, and autobiography, but also shatters the interpretive lens that traditionally confuses the transcription of the real world, where truth and falsity apply, with narrative modes governed by other criteria.

Book When Alice Lay Down With Peter

Download or read book When Alice Lay Down With Peter written by Margaret Sweatman and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2011-01-28 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Alice Lay Down with Peter is a sweeping, magical novel that follows four generations of the McCormack family through more than a century of Canadian history, as it unfolds on the flood plains of southern Manitoba. The story of Alice and Peter McCormack and their progeny is a glorious, witty, and intimate epic that truly reminds us that life stories not only include the details of the past, but also expand into the present and future, encompassing much more than the statistics of life and death would seem to admit. Narrated by Blondie McCormack--Alice and Peter’s daughter, who has just died at the age of 109--When Alice Lay Down with Peter is a novel that rejoices in the inevitability of change, and in the hauntings that reward our choosing to remember our own history. Just as When Alice Lay Down with Peter is a story of a family, it is a story of a particular place over time. Margaret Sweatman’s characters are never separate from the story of the land itself, or from the natural and political events that work away at its edges. The history of the McCormacks is a history of life on the land: of bountiful crops and devastating floods, the renewal of spring and the death that marks each fall. It is in the connection between the place and its inhabitants that we find the deceptively simple meaning of “home.” And it is to this conjoining of histories that Sweatman brings the lightning spark of her imagination, and out of which this wonderful novel has been born.

Download or read book Shifting Sands written by Radha Venuprasad and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shifting Sands is a collection of short stories about relationships — not only between men and women, but between families, extended families and even cultures. Most of the stories are rooted in the culture and traditions of the Nairs of Kerala, but any reader can identify with these well-told tales, because the building blocks of all relationships are universal. Some of the life situations central to the stories may not be acknowledged, much less talked about, even in this ‘liberal’ age, but Radha Venuprasad discusses them frankly and with sensitivity. All the stories revolve around strong people who are not afraid to be themselves. There is Renu, who decided to keep her love child. But at what price? There is Shiva, who, despite his commitment to his wife of many years and their children, found himself drawn towards and taking responsibility for a beleaguered young woman. Then there is Dhruva, an affluent, gifted doctor with a secret, Aruna, for whom the stars foretold a violent end, and Ammu, Markanday and Seema, whose lives intermingle and turn conventions upside-down. Read also about Anita, whose tragic past intrudes into her idyllic present, about Minikutty, a chip off the old block, and how Gopala Menon unwittingly sets off a chain of events that shake the very foundations of his ancient family when he lets a young writer live in a house on his sprawling premises. Written in simple language, Shifting Sands is an easy read, and is sure to engage the interest of anyone who picks it up.
