Download or read book Vibe written by Corey J. Miles and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where exactly does the South begin and end? Current maps are too rigid to account for the ways Black people have built the South while being simultaneously excluded from it. Drawing from the different ways Black artists in the 2-5-2 area code in North Carolina use "vibe" as a mode of knowing and communication, author Corey J. Miles illustrates how Black feeling and unfeeling offer entry points into the contemporary South that challenge static and monolithic notions of the region. Placing the local artists in conversation with other southern cultural creators such as 2 Chainz, Rod Wave, and Rapsody, these ethnographic narratives demonstrate that there are multiple Souths, with overlapping and distinct commitments to working through pain, sound, and belonging. In Vibe: The Sound and Feeling of Black Life in the American South, Miles narrates how southern Black sound, feeling, and being is constantly policed, surveilled, and criminalized. In doing so, he re-narrates the region as the "carceral South," to capture the ways people in the South and beyond can feel the emotional weight of the criminalization of Blackness. Pain music, a subgenre of trap music, is used to take the listener to moments of violence to allow them to hear the desires, anger, and silences that bind Black life in community. Through conceptions of ratchet, hood, and ghetto, Black artists turn away from respectable images and unmap the South. In trap music, they move the South to a space where multiple modes of being find respect and care.

Book A Load of Hooey

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bob Odenkirk
  • Publisher : McSweeney's
  • Release : 2014-10-07
  • ISBN : 1940450667
  • Pages : 107 pages

Download or read book A Load of Hooey written by Bob Odenkirk and published by McSweeney's. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bob Odenkirk is a legend in the comedy-writing world, winning Emmys and acclaim for his work on Saturday Night Live, Mr. Show with Bob and David, and many other seminal TV shows. This book, his first, is a spleen-bruisingly funny omnibus that ranges from absurdist monologues (“Martin Luther King, Jr’s Worst Speech Ever”) to intentionally bad theater (“Hitler Dinner Party: A Play”); from avant-garde fiction (“Obituary for the Creator of Madlibs”) to free-verse poetry that's funnier and more powerful than the work of Calvin Trillin, Jewel, and Robert Louis Stevenson combined. Odenkirk's debut resembles nothing so much as a hilarious new sketch comedy show that’s exclusively available as a streaming video for your mind. As Odenkirk himself writes in “The Second Coming of Jesus and Lazarus,” it is a book “to be read aloud to yourself in the voice of Bob Newhart.”

Book excerpt: DEDICATION & THANK YOU Dear tiny angels, slippery tadpoles, and sugar bears everywhere! When I was little (just about your age), I visited my grandparents in New Bedford, Massachusetts for summer vacations. Grandma always had fun lessons waiting for us "city kids." She brushed our hair, ironed our underwear, and hung the laundry on the clothesline while holding clothespins in her mouth! My brothers and sisters would race through the yard, screaming and yelling, tripping and falling, climbing the cherry tree, and getting our new clothes muddy or dusty or torn. She cooked every meal we ate. No restaurants for us, no sir! We had no television. Grandma said, "Read a book! Write a poem! Let's start a choir! Sing, children!" Then she would sit at her piano and lullaby us to sleep after a hard day of having fun! When she had spare time, she would say, "Run and hide!" This would end up being a fun game of PEEK-A-BOO...Grandma-style! Peek-a-boo was the most amazing, absolute best fun EVER for me! I dedicate my summer memories to Lucy Louise Green Barbour, my grandmother, my mentor, my cherry-pie-from-scratch baker! Now that I am a grandmother, I dedicate this book to Leah Renee, Lilah Gizelle, and Leslie Marie-my three granddaughters! "Run! Hide! Grandma's coming!" Winifred "Oyoko" Loving St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands"

Book Zion Roses

    Book Details:
  • Author : MONICA. MINOTT
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2021-07
  • ISBN : 9781845235178
  • Pages : 72 pages

Download or read book Zion Roses written by MONICA. MINOTT and published by . This book was released on 2021-07 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Zion Roses, her second collection, Monica Minott's poems grasp the reader's attention with a voice that is distinctively personal, both taut and musical--and tender and muscular when the occasion demands. Her language moves seamlessly and always appropriately between standard and Jamaican patwa, a reflection of a vision that encompasses a Black modernity still very much in touch with its aphoristic folk roots, where the ancestral meets Skype or a Jonkonnu band is stuck in a Kingston traffic jam. It is possible to see Minott's poems as being in a constant dialogue between four quadrants of engagement: with history, with landscape, with personal and family experience, and with the worlds of literature, music, and art. Minott's sense of history is deeply informed by a knowledge of the brutalities of commercial empire and of slavery and Black people's struggles against injustice and for selfhood. There is scarcely a poem that does not have some precisely described sense of the materiality of its circumstance and the interactions between the physical world and human feelings. You sense that what sustains a certain bravery of self-exposure and of risk is a sense of belonging to family.
