Download or read book Soviet Postcolonial Studies written by Epp Annus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postcolonial studies is a well-established academic field, rich in theory, but it is based mostly on postcolonial experiences in former West European colonial empires. This book takes a different approach, considering postcolonial theory in relation to the former Soviet bloc. It both applies existing postcolonial theory to this different setting, and also uses the experiences of former Soviet bloc countries to refine and advance theory. Drawing on a wide range of sources, and presenting insights and material of relevance to scholars in a wide range of subjects, the book explores topics such as Soviet colonality as co-constituted with Soviet modernity, the affective structure of identity-creation in national and imperial subjects, and the way in which cultural imaginaries and everyday materialities were formative of Soviet everyday experience.

Download or read book Presidential Sheet Music written by Danny O. Crew and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political historians have traditionally interpreted the people and events of each presidential era by studying books, periodicals, letters, diaries and speeches. One source of printed material that has not received much scholarly attention is published music, much of which has been all but lost in the archives of libraries and museums. The traditional librarianly cataloguing of music has ignored important aspects such as lyrical content and cover art, making it impossible to comprehensively locate and study items by subject matter. Presidential Sheet Music presents an exhaustive listing of presidential-related music in all printed forms, and provides information on each piece. Thus may we expand our understanding of political communication and discourse throughout American history. A sizable Introduction discusses matters from the publication in 1768 of The Liberty Song (which formally made music an instrument of political expression in America) to the few 1980s and 1990s presidential songs and marches. There are also helpful appendices which list music by titles, composers, publishers, and candidates.

Download or read book Boom Harangue written by Richard Heyman and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-07-10 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard X. Heyman is a 60's person -- not a person in his 60's, but one who embraced the decade of the Twist, Dylan, The Beatles, drugs and sex (not necessarily in that order, but close). A Baby Boomer through and through, with the flashbacks to prove it. Born and raised in Plainfield, New Jersey, he started playing music at ages seven and has never stopped. He is an acute observer of his era and here recounts hilarious stories of his life in rock'n'roll. Plenty of names are dropped, mostly of the more successful songsters of the day that he stumbled across in his quest for rock stardom, so total strangers will stay interested. But whether you're a bonfire Boomer or a member of one of the generations on either side, you'll laugh out loud at Heyman's wild tales of music, love and mischief making as a young rock musician in the 1960's and 70's.

Download or read book Scriptural Tales Retold written by Erich S. Gruen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-25 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erich S. Gruen investigates a remarkable phenomenon in religious and literary history: the freedom with which Jewish writers in antiquity retold and recast, sometimes distorted or bypassed, biblical narratives that ostensibly had the status of sacred texts. Gruen asks the question of what prompted such tampering with tales that carried divine authority, and what implications this widespread practice of liberal revising had for attitudes toward the sacrality of the scriptures in general. Gruen focuses upon writings of the Second Temple period, an era of the deep integration of Jewish history and the Greco-Roman world. Gruen brings to the task the training of a classicist and ancient historian rather than that of a biblical textual critic or a rabbinics scholar, not pursuing the commentaries of the later rabbis with their very different approaches, methods, and goals. As such, Gruen's emphasis rests upon narrative rather than legal matters, the haggadic rather than the halakhic. The former lends itself most readily to the creative instincts of the re-tellers.
Download or read book Pindar s Poetry Patrons and Festivals written by Simon Hornblower and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-02-22 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient sport made a huge if indirect contribution to the literature of ancient Greece, since some sixty poems by Pindar and Bacchylides ('epinikian odes'), written to commemorate victories, survive from the Classical period. This book is a collection of essays about that literature, and about the social and physical context for which it was written. The editors assembled an internationally distinguished team of speakers for the original 2002 seminar series held in London, and thesepapers form the backbone of the book. But to ensure coherence and comprehensive coverage, they have commissioned three further papers, and have themselves written a long thematic Introduction. The result is a stellar team of authors, and a book which looks at an important literary phenomenon inlight of the latest archaeological and sociological insights, as well as evaluating the poetry both as poetry and as a performance genre with distinctive characteristics.
Download or read book The Different Faces of Politics in Literature and Music written by Mario Thomas Vassallo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the links between politics and governance and the arts. The essays in the volume show how literature and music have challenged those in power risking political censure. In addition, they also try to delineate how patronage has been used for propaganda, or to stir up national fervour. They focus on the tension and symbiosis between the politician and the artist foregrounding how they have always tried to influence, challenge, and, in some cases, undermine one another. This volume will serve as an indispensable source for researchers and academics in political science, the humanities and performing arts.
