Book excerpt: This first, systematic survey of the Tibetan non-canonical literature dealing with Sanskrit grammar, partly consists of translations of Indic works, such as revisions of canonical versions, and translations of works not contained in the canon, and partly of original Tibetan works. In the first chapter of the book a detailed description of these textual materials is presented – sixty-one titles in total – which were produced during all periods of Tibetan literary history, from the ninth to the twentieth centuries. The second chapter discusses one specific effect of the impetus of Indic traditional grammar within Tibetan scholastics, namely the influence of Indic models of linguistic description on Tibetan indigenous grammar. This particular assimilation of an Indic technical discipline into Tibetan scholarship is examined in detail, and it is shown that other segments of Indic Buddhism were sources of inspiration and derivation for the Tibetan grammarians as well.

Etymologia is a fundamental procedure and discursive strategy in the philosophy and analysis of language in early medieval Latin grammar, as well as in Biblical exegesis, encyclopedic writing, theology, and philosophy. Read through the frame of poststructuralist analysis of discourse and the philosophy of science, the procedure of the ars grammatica are interpreted as overlapping genres (commentary, glossary, encyclopedia, exegesis) which use different verbal or extraverbal criteria to explain the origins and significations of words and which establish different epistemological frames within which an etymological account of language is situated. The study also includes many translations of heretofore untranslated passages from Latin grammatical and exegetical writings.

It is a grammatical commentary on the Hebrew Bible. This volume presents a critical edition of a large section of that Hebrew grammatical text, together with an annotated English translation and a detailed analysis of its contents. The analysis concerns the tradition of Hebrew grammatical thought that was developed in the Middle Ages by grammarians belonging to the Karaite movement of Judaism. The work is an important contribution to the study of the history of Hebrew grammar and to the study of medieval Jewish thought in general. It brings to light, for the first time, one of the major Hebrew grammatical texts from the tenth century, which predates most of the works of the Spanish school of Hebrew grammar.
