Book Grain Size Control in AA5083 by Thermomechanical Processing TMP The Role of Dispersed Particles

Download or read book Grain Size Control in AA5083 by Thermomechanical Processing TMP The Role of Dispersed Particles written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superplasiticity in Aluminum alloys allows for the economical forming of components of complex shapes while retaining the high-strength and stiffness-to-weight ratios characteristic of alloys used in automotive, aerospace and military applications. Superplastic materials require fine grains with high-angle boundaries having resistance to failure by cavitation. This study was designed to achieve improved control of microstructure of Continuously Cast (CC) AA 5083 utilizing the Particle Stimulated Nucleation (PSN) model as a guide. The studies included a variety of overaging parameters in the thermomechanical process (TMP), followed by a constant processing strain and a subsequent recrystallization annealing treatment. The resulting material was analyzed using optical microscopy, and backscatter electron (BSE) and orientation imaging microscopy (OIM) methods to evaluate the effect of the processing on the grain size and the dispersion of particles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superplastic forming is an emerging industrial technology that allows the production of complex shapes in metallic materials including aluminum. A critical characteristic of materials that are capable of sustaining superplastic forming is a fine grain size. In this study a commercial aluminum-magnesium- manganese alloy received in the as-cast condition was subjected to various thermomechanical processes intended to refine the grain size. Particle stimulated nucleation (PSN) theory was employed to develop the thermomechanical processes. These processes all involved initial homogenization and hot working. Subsequent annealing treatments were intended to control the size and size distribution of second phase particles, such as Al6Mn. Strain energy was introduced through cold rolling followed by recrystallization anneals. Samples were analyzed using orientation-imaging microscopy to examine the effect of processing variables on the recrystallized grain size.

Book Electron Backscatter Diffraction in Materials Science

Download or read book Electron Backscatter Diffraction in Materials Science written by Adam J. Schwartz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-11 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron backscatter diffraction is a very powerful and relatively new materials characterization technique aimed at the determination of crystallographic texture, grain boundary character distributions, lattice strain, phase identification, and much more. The purpose of this book is to provide the fundamental basis for electron backscatter diffraction in materials science, the current state of both hardware and software, and illustrative examples of the applications of electron backscatter diffraction to a wide-range of materials including undeformed and deformed metals and alloys, ceramics, and superconductors. The text has been substantially revised from the first edition, and the authors have kept the format as close as possible to the first edition text. The new developments covered in this book include a more comphrensive coverage of the fundamentals not covered in the first edition or other books in the field, the advances in hardware and software since the first edition was published, and current examples of application of electron backscatter diffraction to solve challenging problems in materials science and condensed-matter physics.

Book Friction Stir Welding

Download or read book Friction Stir Welding written by Daniela Lohwasser and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2009-12-18 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friction stir welding (FSW) is a highly important and recently developed joining technology that produces a solid phase bond. It uses a rotating tool to generate frictional heat that causes material of the components to be welded to soften without reaching the melting point and allows the tool to move along the weld line. Plasticized material is transferred from the leading edge to trailing edge of the tool probe, leaving a solid phase bond between the two parts. Friction stir welding: from basics to applications reviews the fundamentals of the process and how it is used in industrial applications.Part one discusses general issues with chapters on topics such as basic process overview, material deformation and joint formation in friction stir welding, inspection and quality control and friction stir welding equipment requirements and machinery descriptions as well as industrial applications of friction stir welding. A chapter giving an outlook on the future of friction stir welding is included in Part one. Part two reviews the variables in friction stir welding including residual stresses in friction stir welding, effects and defects of friction stir welds, modelling thermal properties in friction stir welding and metallurgy and weld performance. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Friction stir welding: from basics to applications is a standard reference for mechanical, welding and materials engineers in the aerospace, automotive, railway, shipbuilding, nuclear and other metal fabrication industries, particularly those that use aluminium alloys. - Provides essential information on topics such as basic process overview, materials deformation and joint formation in friction stir welding - Inspection and quality control and friction stir welding equipment requirements are discussed as well as industrial applications of friction stir welding - Reviews the variables involved in friction stir welding including residual stresses, effects and defects of friction stir welds, modelling thermal properties, metallurgy and weld performance
