Book excerpt: A thoughtfully curated, cleverly designed keepsake that distills the wisdom of all those powerful graduation speakers—from Barack Obama and Gloria Steinem to Kermit the Frog—into the best advice for grads of all ages. Carpe Every Diem is a thought-provoking collection of quotes from famous graduation speakers meant to motivate and inspire the next generation of leaders. Paired by theme, many of the quotes complement one another. George Saunders, for example, riffs on the “failures of kindness” of his youth, encouraging grads to be kinder. Jimmy Buffett offers a simpler nugget of kind-spiration: “Be Santa Claus when you can.” Other quotes, however, are paired with conflicting advice, giving graduates the opportunity to choose what to believe in. Some may respond to Neil Gaiman's “make good art” speech, while others may prefer John Waters's call to arms to horrify and outrage others with their art. Which of these affirmations will you choose? Each quote is accompanied by a short bio of the speaker and stamped with the year and institution where the commencement speech was delivered. With advice from the likes of Abby Wambach, Angela Davis, David Foster Wallace, Oprah Winfrey, Spike Lee, and more, readers will be swept away by the wit and wisdom contained in this book—perfect for graduates, creative thinkers, or anyone seeking inspiration.

Book excerpt: What will it take to achieve President Obama’s higher education completion agenda? The United States, long considered to have the best higher education in the world, now ranks eleventh in the proportion of 25- to 34-year-olds with a college degree. As other countries have made dramatic gains in degree attainment, the U.S. has improved more slowly. In response, President Obama recently laid out a national “completion agenda” with the goal of making the U.S. the best-educated nation in the world by the year 2020. Getting to Graduation explores the reforms that we must pursue to recover a position of international leadership in higher education as well as the obstacles to those reforms. This new completion agenda puts increased pressure on institutions to promote student success and improve institutional productivity in a time of declining public revenue. In this volume, scholars of higher education and public policymakers describe promising directions for reform. They argue that it is essential to redefine postsecondary education and to consider a broader range of learning opportunities—beyond the research university and traditional bachelor degree programs—to include community colleges, occupational certificate programs, and apprenticeships. The authors also emphasize the need to rethink policies governing financial aid, remediation, and institutional funding to promote degree completion.

Book Latino High School Graduation

Download or read book Latino High School Graduation written by Harriett D. Romo and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-05-28 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While high school drop-out rates have steadily declined among white and African American students over the 1970s and 1980s a constant 35 percent of Latino students continued to quit school before graduation. In this pioneering work, Harriett Romo and Toni Falbo reveal how a group of at-risk Latino students defied the odds and earned a high school diploma. Romo and Falbo tracked the progress of 100 students in Austin, Texas, from 1989 to 1993. Drawing on interviews with the students and their parents, school records, and fieldwork in the schools and communities, the authors identify both the obstacles that caused many students to drop out and the successful strategies that other students and their parents pursued to ensure high school graduation. The authors conclude with seven far-reaching recommendations for changes in the public schools. Sure to provoke debate among all school constituencies, this book will be required reading for school administrators, teachers, parents, legislators, and community leaders.
