In American practice it is distinguished on the one hand from the recitation room, which has only chairs or settees for the pupils and is used, as its name implies, only for reci tations (or sometimes also for lectures and dictation exercises), and on the other from the general study room, which is found more frequently in Europe than With us, and in which a number of class es, aggregating a hundred or two of pupils, spend the assigned hours of study between recitations. The normal American class room accommodates from 30 to 50 (or rarely up to 60) pupils as fixed desks. In some special or private schools the number in a class room is as low as 25; but economy of administration makes b it desirable that the number should not fall below 30 to 35, while efficiency demands that it should not greatly or often ex esed 40. Each pupil has a desk, and the total floor area should not be less than 18 square feet per pupil, with at least 216 cu bic feet as the minimum cubic volume per pupil. Twenty square feet and 260 feet, respectively, are better figures for all ex cept the lower grades attended by small children. A slightly oh long room, with the teacher's desk at one end, is the best shape. Thus for a 40-desk class room in an upper grade grammar school. Some years ago the authors of Standards for City School Buildings, which appear in this document, began to develop a score card and standards for the measurement of school buildings. Growing out of an experience in evaluating more than a thousand school buildings and in the careful study of school building standards, there have been developed a score card upon which is recorded the number of points out of a thousand assigned to any particular building and this state ment of standards. The score card and the accompanying standards have been used to advantage for two separate pur poses: first, the scoring of school buildings in the light of a school building program to be developed by a city, and sec ond, in the checking of plans for new school buildings. Even in so short a period as six years, since the earlier book appeared, there have been large changes in American secondary education and these have been reflected accurately in the design and construction of buildings. The high school has entirely outgrown its academic limitations and traditions and has broadened its influence and its curriculum. Thus, the industrial arts and household arts are no longer "basement subjects;" the natural sciences are now taught in a way to require diversified laboratories; the physical care of students has been extended to necessitate very complete gymnasia and lunch rooms; and the movement for the "wider use" of the school plant by adults has become a fixed fact which school authorities have recognized thru better auditorium and night school facilities. The high school building of the present day is far more inclusive and complicated in the number and type of activities which it serves, and the structures illustrated in the following pages bear out this statement. A departure has been made from the earlier book in the shape of text matter. This consists of articles which appeared originally in the School Board Journal and which aroused considerable attention as statements of fundamental principles in the field of high school architecture. The writer of this work, when joining, some years ago, a body concerned with the building and management of a considerable number of Secondary Schools, felt very strongly the want of a book dealing with the ordinary questions arising in connection with their buildings. A careful search, however, elicited the fact that no such thing existed. There was of course Mr Robson's well-known "School Architecture," but this, brought out in 1874, a period when drastic changes in tuition and in the arrangement of school buildings were in progress, has become for the most part inapplicable to the modern style of school. It is also practically confined to the Board Schools of London, and a short chapter in it, with another in Mr Robin's "Technical School and College Building," represent the literature dealing with the subject of buildings for Secondary Schools. The present volume is intended to supply this deficiency, and while both Elementary and Secondary Schools are included, the latter have been made its principal aim. They are dealt with before the Elementary Schools, on the ground that it is more desirable that the methods of Secondary School buildings should find their way into the Elementary Schools, than that those of the Elementary School should be adopted in the Higher Schools, as has hitherto been too much the case; probably owing to the fact that the books published on school buildings treat nearly all questions from the point of view of the Board School. These are essential elements in the planning of any school building of whatever size or material. Separate cloak rooms for boys and girls should be arranged. They should be provided with hooks for the hats, cloaks and coats, and shelves for the dinner baskets. The doors of the cloak rooms should open into the main room. To have them open only into the vestibule adds considerably to the problem of discipline. It is especially important to keep the cloak rooms in a sanitary condition. To that end ample light and ventilation should be provided. A small room for library and storage purposes has come to be one of the most useful agencies of the rural school. \vith very little additional expense such a room may be provided with books, book cases, reference works, a table and a few chairs. This will give a place for the older pupils to study when they have special work to prepare. The library room is an in dispensible part of the modern country school house. A fuel room or fuel basement should also be included in the plans. It will cost less than a separate coal house and will add greatly to the convenience of the school plant. The enrollments have been climbing to high percentages of school-age youth. The curriculum has been broadened to meet the needs of all types of students. There has been expansion downward and upward as the junior high school and the junior College have been established. The services of the school in the library, the cafeteria, the dramatic and fine arts, the home arts, in vocational education, and in physical education have shown significant advancement. School and community interests have been closely joined. Guidance and counseling have become outstanding features of administration. Student activities have been fully recognized for their educational values. In fact, every classroom and laboratory subject has been widened in scope as it has felt the impact of our rapidly changing civilization. School executives, supervisors, and teachers with high professional training have contributed liberally to the unprecedented growth and adjustment represented by these trends in secondary education. Teaching methods have been improved. Audio-visual means of learning have been introduced extensively. The democratization of the school's management has been accepted as a desirable goal. As secondary education has matured, much of the success of new ventures depended upon the capacity and character of the school plant. School buildings, of course, are not at flexible as the school program or the curricula. The past five decades have witnessed a steady improvement in the kind of buildings but without sufficient adaptation of the plant to the needs of the educational program. During this period a new type of high school has been in the making, but the emphases in planning were mainly upon safety, sanitation, student circulation, the materials of construction, and the improvement of the utility services. The centralized sites that were sought were limited in acreage frequently preventing the desired expansion. The needs of the curriculum and the philosophy under which the school was to be administered received little consideration in the planning processes. These years produced, however, many high school buildings which will long serve their communities. The decentralization of American cities, the increasingly popular ownership of automobiles, the necessity for having large sites to meet the need of an expanding curriculum, and the delimitation of a school's enrollment to a workable optimum are influences which in part determine the location and kind of school for the community now compelled to further planning. It seems clear that the regional, comprehensive, coeducational high school will best meet the future needs of most growing American communities. Boards of education, who would have the approval of future generations, will buy extensive acreages. The recommendations of the superintendent of schools and his staff will be based on a most detailed school building survey, to that the school's location and its size are determined without prejudice. The school superintendent's specifications of educational and community requirements for the new building will include a statement of the philosophy under which the school will operate, the functions to be served in all spaces and a detailed outline with all educational implications for each space. Members of the supervisory, educational, and custodial staffs will have participated in giving clear definition of their aims and the space problems they encounter. The architect will then be provided with the voluminous information which will enable him to fulfill his commission. At this stage of building planning, many conferences should be held until the architect and all other interested parties have achieved a common understanding of the educational aims sought, the nature of the curriculum, and the ways and m
