Book Grace Gratitude and Giving Biblical Reflections on Christian Philanthropy

Download or read book Grace Gratitude and Giving Biblical Reflections on Christian Philanthropy written by Jeffrey P. Greenman and published by Regent College Publishing. This book was released on 2020-07 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Grace, Gratitude, and Giving, six ambassadors of Regent College attempt to deepen the conversation among Christians about our relationship to money and the idea of giving some of it away--a subject usually considered awkward at best, and perhaps even off-limits in many church circles. It is intended to assist Christian lay people and pastors alike to gain some valuable glimpses into the Bible's way of thinking about money, possessions, and generosity. Aimed at stimulating our thinking about the foundational beliefs underpinning the practices of Christian philanthropy, Grace, Gratitude, and Giving ultimately hopes that, as an expression of Regent's core mission, it might be used by God "to cultivate intelligent, vigorous and joyful commitment to Jesus Christ, his church and his world." Jeffrey P. Greenman is President and Professor of Theology and Ethics at Regent College. He also served as Associate Dean of Biblical and Theological Studies and Professor of Christian Ethics at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, and worked for nine years in leadership at Tyndale Seminary in Toronto. He has also worked in the US government in the areas of education and juvenile justice, as well as working in national politics and in educational consulting.

Download or read book Toxic Charity written by Robert D. Lupton and published by HarperOne. This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public service is a way of life for Americans; giving is a part of our national character. But compassionate instincts and generous spirits aren’t enough, says veteran urban activist Robert D. Lupton. In this groundbreaking guide, he reveals the disturbing truth about charity: all too much of it has become toxic, devastating to the very people it’s meant to help. In his four decades of urban ministry, Lupton has experienced firsthand how our good intentions can have unintended, dire consequences. Our free food and clothing distribution encourages ever-growing handout lines, diminishing the dignity of the poor while increasing their dependency. We converge on inner-city neighborhoods to plant flowers and pick up trash, battering the pride of residents who have the capacity (and responsibility) to beautify their own environment. We fly off on mission trips to poverty-stricken villages, hearts full of pity and suitcases bulging with giveaways—trips that one Nicaraguan leader describes as effective only in “turning my people into beggars.” In Toxic Charity, Lupton urges individuals, churches, and organizations to step away from these spontaneous, often destructive acts of compassion toward thoughtful paths to community development. He delivers proven strategies for moving from toxic charity to transformative charity. Proposing a powerful “Oath for Compassionate Service” and spotlighting real-life examples of people serving not just with their hearts but with proven strategies and tested tactics, Lupton offers all the tools and inspiration we need to develop healthy, community-driven programs that produce deep, measurable, and lasting change. Everyone who volunteers or donates to charity needs to wrestle with this book.

Book What s So Amazing About Grace Bible Study Participant s Guide Updated Edition

Download or read book What s So Amazing About Grace Bible Study Participant s Guide Updated Edition written by Philip Yancey and published by HarperChristian Resources. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of Christianity depends on how we master the art of understanding and giving grace. At the end of the twentieth century, Philip Yancey wrote his classic bestseller What's So Amazing About Grace? as a testament to the power of God's grace and as a rallying cry to the Christian church to see the acting out of grace as its single most important contribution to the world. Now, in this 6-session, video-based participant's guide (DVD/video streaming sold separately), Yancey reexamines—with fresh material and new stories—the scandalous power of grace so that groups and individuals can reflect upon, share, and extend this amazing gift of Christ in new and transformative ways. In this study, you'll discover: The extent of God's love and what it means for us. Why the church seems to have lost the gift of grace-giving and why the world apart from the church can't offer it at all. What it would look like for us to truly understand, receive, and give the gift that God gives so generously to us. Yancey offers compelling and true portraits of grace's life-changing power. He searches for its presence in his own life and in the church. He asks how Christians today can contend graciously with moral issues that threaten all they hold dear. And he challenges each of us to become living answers to a world that desperately wants to know, "what's so amazing about grace?"

Book excerpt: What does biblical prosperity have to do with giving? While it is clear from Scripture that God desires to prosper His children materially, the Word's emphasis is not on amassing personal wealth but on having a generous heart like the Father's. Ché Ahn believes that God desires to prosper His people, and that He will do so as they trust His grace to provide for their needs and seek to reflect His giving, blessing image. This happens as believers repent of the hindrances of mind and heart that motivate them to grasp at wealth in unhealthy and self-defeating ways. The Grace of Giving guides readers to tear down the idols of wealth and poverty and to flourish in God's presence and provision.

Book Gratefulness

  • Author : Susan Muto
  • Publisher : Ave Maria Press
  • Release : 2018-02-02
  • ISBN : 1594717869
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Gratefulness written by Susan Muto and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a consumer-driven world where we’re told we need and deserve more, Susan Muto, executive director of the Epiphany Association, reminds us that gratefulness is a gift from God. In Gratefulness: The Habit of a Grace-Filled Life, she reveals that grateful living is not another new fad but has been the way of saints and Christian mystics for centuries. Many popular secular books today explore how embracing gratitude can lead to a happier, healthier life. In contrast, Muto, a renowned author, speaker, and teacher, approaches gratitude from a uniquely Catholic perspective. In this insightful, inspiring book, she explores how life-changing a spirit of gratefulness can be by using both personal and well-known examples of the struggles and rewards of grateful living. Muto and companions such as Julian of Norwich, St. Thérèse of Lisieux, Henri J. M. Nouwen, and Dorothy Day highlight the power of gratitude as a grace from God and walk with us as we learn to practice thankfulness. We start the journey toward gratefulness by embracing gratitude in all circumstances and end it by thankfully accepting the missions God entrusts to each of us. Along the way, we begin to accept God’s grace by understanding the benefits of positivity and dangers of negativity, the redemptive power of prayer, and the lasting fruits of thankfulness. A spirituality of gratitude reminds us that, even without the possessions, luxuries, or leisure time society claims are the most important things in life, God still loves, cares, and knows what’s best for us. Muto also provides practical tools that help us embrace this grace in our lives.
