Book GPSG Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar Recognition Is NP Hard

Download or read book GPSG Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar Recognition Is NP Hard written by Eric Sven Ristad and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proponents of Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar (GPSG) often cite its weak context-free generative power as proof of the computational tractability of GPSG-Recognition. It is well known that context-free languages can be parsed in O(cu h) time by a wide range of algorithms. Hence, it might be thought that GPSG's weak context-free generative power should guarantee that it too is efficiently parasible. This widely-assumed GPSG efficient parsibility result is false: A reduction from 3-Satisfiability proves that GPSG-Recognition is a function of an input string and a grammar, and the GPSG metarule grammar can result in an arbitrarily large finite set of derived context-free rules. It is further demonstrated that a central object in GPSG theory, the metarule, inherently results in an intractable recognition problem, even when severely constrained. The implications for linguistics and natural parsing are discussed. (Author).

Book Computational Structure of GPSG Models

Download or read book Computational Structure of GPSG Models written by Eric Sven Ristad and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary goal of this report is to demonstrate how considerations from computational complexity theory can inform grammatical theorizing. To this end, generalized phrase structure grammar (GPSG) linguistic theory is revised so that its power more closely matches the limited ability of an ideal speaker--hearer: GPSG Recognition is EXP-POLY time hard, while Revised GPSG Recognition is NP-complete. A second goal is to provide a theoretical framework within which to better understand the wide range of existing GPSG models, embodied in formal definitions as well as in implemented computer programs. A grammar for English and an informal explanation of the GPSG/RGPSG syntactic features are included in appendices.

Book Mathematics of Language

Download or read book Mathematics of Language written by Alexis Manaster-Ramer and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By mathematics of language is meant the mathematical properties that may, under certain assumptions about modeling, be attributed to human languages and related symbolic systems, as well as the increasingly active and autonomous scholarly discipline that studies such things. More specifically, the use of techniques developed in a variety of pure and applied mathematics, including logic and the theory of computation, in the discovery and articulation of insights into the structure of language. Some of the contributions to this volume deal primarily with foundational issues, others with specific models and theoretical issues. A few are concerned with semantics, but most focus on syntax. The papers in this volume reveal applications of the several fields of the theory of computation (formal languages, automata, complexity), formal logic, topology, set theory, graph theory, and statistics. The book also shows a keen interest in developing mathematical models that are especially suited to natural languages.

Book A Course In Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar GPSG

This book was released on 1989 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A central goal of mathematical linguistics is to precisely determine the power of a linguistic theory. Traditionally, formal language theory (the Chomsky hierarchy) and its generative power analyses have translated this question into the narrower question of how unrestricted the rule format of a theory is. Modern computational complexity theory offers another, more useful, translation: how much of what computational resources does a theory consume? Complexity theory also offers a new perspective on descriptive adequacy. In a descriptively adequate linguistic theory, the structural descriptions and computational power of the theory match those of an ideal speaker-hearer. The primary goal of this paper is to demonstrate how considerations from computational complexity theory can inform grammatical theorizing. To this end, the paper revises generalized phrase structure grammar (GPSG) linguistic theory so that its computational power more closely matches the limited computational ability of an ideal speaker-hearer. A second goal is to provide a theoretical framework within which to better understand the wide range of GPSG models that have appeared in the theoretical and computational linguistics literature, embodied in formal definitions as well as in implemented computer programs.

Book Practical Parsing of Generalised Phrase Structure Grammars

Download or read book Practical Parsing of Generalised Phrase Structure Grammars written by A. J. Fisher and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An efficient algorithm is described for parsing a dialect of generalized phrase structure grammar (GPSG). A practical parsing system, based on the algorithm, is presented. The dialect of GPSG which the parsing system accepts is smaller, but considerably 'purer' (closer to the original definition of GPSG) and mathematically 'cleaner' than that which is accepted by other practical parsing systems. In particular, the parsing system correctly implements feature co-occurrence restrictions, subject only to the restriction that the FCR set can be expressed in clausal form as a set of Horn clauses.
