Book Failing Law Schools

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brian Z. Tamanaha
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2012-06-18
  • ISBN : 0226923622
  • Pages : 253 pages

Download or read book Failing Law Schools written by Brian Z. Tamanaha and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-06-18 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An essential title for anyone thinking of law school or concerned with America's dysfunctional legal system.” —Library Journal On the surface, law schools today are thriving. Enrollments are on the rise and law professors are among the highest paid. Yet behind the flourishing facade, law schools are failing abjectly. Recent front-page stories have detailed widespread dubious practices, including false reporting of LSAT and GPA scores, misleading placement reports, and the fundamental failure to prepare graduates to enter the profession. Addressing all these problems and more is renowned legal scholar Brian Z. Tamanaha. Piece by piece, Tamanaha lays out the how and why of the crisis and the likely consequences if the current trend continues. The out-of-pocket cost of obtaining a law degree at many schools now approaches $200,000. The average law school graduate’s debt is around $100,000—the highest it has ever been—while the legal job market is the worst in decades. Growing concern with the crisis in legal education has led to high-profile coverage in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, and many observers expect it soon will be the focus of congressional scrutiny. Bringing to the table his years of experience from within the legal academy, Tamanaha provides the perfect resource for assessing what’s wrong with law schools and figuring out how to fix them. “Failing Law Schools presents a comprehensive case for the negative side of the legal education debate and I am sure that many legal academics and every law school dean will be talking about it.” —Stanley Fish, Florida International University College of Law

Book The Hard Road to Reform

Download or read book The Hard Road to Reform written by Brian Raftopolos and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2013-02-17 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The defeat of ZANU-PF in the 2008 parliamentary election marked the end of one-party rule in Zimbabwe. The Global Political Agreement signed later that resulted in a Government of National Unity, and the former ruling party was, for the first time, faced with the reality of sharing power. The Hard Road to Reform presents a penetrating analysis of developments since the GNU was established, reviewing recent political history from a range of perspectives - political, economic, social and historical, and featuring the best work of Zimbabwe's young scholars. As Brian Raftopolos writes in his introduction: 'the book is an attempt to analyse and assess both the hopes and frustrations of the last four years and to confront the harsh challenges that lie ahead.'

Book Asian Americans Education and Crime

Download or read book Asian Americans Education and Crime written by Daisy Ball and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian/Americans, Education, and Crime: The Model Minority as Victim and Perpetrator analyzes Asian/Americans’ interactions with the U.S. criminal justice system as perpetrators and victims of crime. This book contributes to a limited amount of scholarly writing so that researchers, policymakers, and educators can gain a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the relationship between Asian/Americans and the criminal justice system. In reality, Asian/Americans in the United States are both the victims of crime and the perpetrators of crime. However, their characterization as the “model minority” masks the victimization and violence they experience in the twenty-first century.

  • Author : Slavoj Žižek
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2014-12-23
  • ISBN : 0231538413
  • Pages : 239 pages

Download or read book What Does Europe Want written by Slavoj Žižek and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slavoj i ek and Srecko Horvat combine their critical clout to emphasize the dangers of ignoring Europe's growing wealth gap and the parallel rise in right-wing nationalism, which is directly tied to the fallout from the ongoing financial crisis and its prescription of imposed austerity. To general observers, the European Union's economic woes appear to be its greatest problem, but the real peril is an ongoing ideological–political crisis that threatens an era of instability and reactionary brutality. The fall of communism in 1989 seemed to end the leftist program of universal emancipation. However, nearly a quarter of a century later, the European Union has failed to produce any coherent vision that can mobilize people to action. Until recently, the only ideology receptive to European workers has been the nationalist call to "defend" against immigrant integration. Today, Europe is focused on regulating the development of capitalism and promoting a reactionary conception of its cultural heritage. Yet staying these courses, i ek and Horvat show, only strips Europe of its power and stifles its political ingenuity. The best hope is for Europe to revive and defend its legacy of universal egalitarianism, which benefits all parties by preserving the promise of equal representation.
