Book excerpt: Although far from the front lines of war, the people of Idaho contributed to the US effort in World War II in myriad ways. Entrepreneurs perfected the dehydration of potatoes and onions that became staples of the rations that sustained Allied troops stationed around the globe. Idahoans mined rare metals and manufactured them into weapons and munitions that allowed US forces to compete with the technologies of their opponents. Local communities organized USO huts that provided coffee, cookies, and warm smiles to homesick troops in transit to and from the war. However, World War II also left an indelible mark on the state of Idaho. On the one hand, the federal government's ambitious construction of airports, buildings, and roads to support the war effort transformed a rural state that had lacked infrastructure. On the other hand, Idaho soil housed detention camps where American citizens were denied fundamental rights. And loss and heartbreak impacted nearly every community.

Book excerpt: The Idaho Air National Guard (ANG), headquartered at Gowen Field in Boise, Idaho, fulfills a vital defense role by maintaining the 124th Tactical Reconnaissance Group at a combat readiness level and by providing effective reconnaissance training for other ANG units. The Idaho ANG assumes the responsibility of Base Manager for the operation and maintenance of the airfield, personnel and facilities, and for the support of tenant units including the Idaho Army National Guard (ArNG) and the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC). In 1975, DOD began its Installation Restoration Program (IRP) to assess past activities on DOD installations related to storage and disposal of toxic and hazardous materials. The purpose of the Phase I Records Search is to identify and evaluate suspected problems associated with past hazardous materials handling procedures, disposal sites, and spill sites on DOD facilities. The existence and potential for migration of hazardous material contaminants was evaluated at Gowen Field by reviewing existing environmental information, analyzing installation records, and conducting interviews with past and present employees at Gowen Field. Pertinent information includes the history of operations, with special emphasis on past hazardous materials management procedures; the geological and hydrogeological conditions that may facilitate migration of the potential contaminants; and the ecological settings that indicate environmentally sensitive habitats or evidence of environmental stress.

The book chronicles the author's life as a professional guide and a distinguished 23-year military career, including time spent as a member of the 7th ARCOM from 1993 until 2004. Growing up on a farm in southwest Idaho, Dawson graduated from the Greenleaf Friends Academy in 1974 and worked as a diesel mechanic, spending his spare time with horses. Dawson eventually met a wilderness outfitter and was offered a job as a guide. He spent several seasons as a guide in the Salmon River Wilderness Area in central Idaho, before moving to Denmark. Dawson joined the 25th Army Band, Idaho National Guard in 1983, eventually transferring to the 104th Division, changing to MOS 11B, and becoming a drill Sergeant in the Army Reserve, and then transferring to the 321st Combat Engineers. After moving to Denmark, the author transferred to the 7th Army Reserve Command (ARCOM) and went on to earn the Meritorious Service Medal and the Bronze Star following assignments in Bosnia, Ukraine, Kosovo, Kuwait, and Iraq. Guide's Life chronicles the author's adventures, experiences and trials during these 23 years of service. Mikel W. Dawson grew up a country boy in rural Idaho. Following a distinguished career in the military, the author now resides in Lintrup, Denmark where he runs his own business shoeing horses.
