Book excerpt: Three decades ago doctors in Cleveland, a county in the northeast of England, identified a sexual abuse scandal that provoked a nationwide scandal in the United Kingdom. Pediatricians uncovered evidence of abuse in 121 children, but official investigations led to the majority of the charges being dismissed, with children returned to their families and the public reassured that there was no widespread abuse problem. In this revelatory book, Beatrix Campbell proves that the government inquiry that followed the scandal was a cover-up. Within days of its opening, experts had confirmed that 75% of the diagnoses had been correct, but ministers never revealed those findings to Parliament or the public. Instead, they discredited the doctors and social workers involved in a dangerous attempt to minimize scrutiny and criticism. The legacy of the Cleveland scandal lives today, even as the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse is underway. It began an era of skepticism and blame in child protection policy that put children's safety at risk, then and now.

Book Understanding and Responding to Child Sexual Exploitation

Download or read book Understanding and Responding to Child Sexual Exploitation written by Helen Beckett and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of child sexual exploitation (CSE) has received intense scrutiny in recent years, following a number of high profile legal cases, serious case reviews and inquiries. This has resulted in increasing expectations that those working in the field will know how to appropriately manage and respond to this form of abuse. Of course, this is no easy task given the widely acknowledged difficulties of identifying and responding to sexual abuse and the particular complexities associated with the gain dynamic within CSE and the predominantly older age of children affected by it. This edited collection draws on the latest research evidence and academic thinking around CSE to consider issues of understanding and response. Written by researchers from ‘The International Centre: Researching child sexual exploitation, violence and trafficking’ at the University of Bedfordshire, Part I considers issues of understanding and conceptualisation. Part II considers the practical implications of some of this thinking, sharing learning from research and evaluation on prevention, identification and response. Understanding and Responding to Child Exploitation presents critical learning for academics and students, and for those working in the fields of policy, practice and commissioning. It is relevant to a wide range of disciplines including social care, youth work, education, criminology, health and social policy.

Book Risk and Harm in Youth Sexting

Download or read book Risk and Harm in Youth Sexting written by Emily Setty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores young people’s perspectives on risk and harm in youth sexting, specifically privacy violations and unwanted, pressured and coerced sexting. This book engages with key debates, academic literature and evidence, as well as findings of a study into young people’s perceptions of, attitudes toward and experiences of sexting. It challenges predominant assumptions that youth sexting is inherently risky and deviant and sets out the specific contexts in which privacy violations and unwanted sexting occur. It explores the sociocultural contexts underpinning harm, including gender, sexism, sexuality, status and power, and associated constructs of risk and shame, as well as broader youth cultural contexts that create and giving meaning to sexters and sexting practices, particularly related to victim-blaming, social shaming, bullying, harassment and abuse. Finally, it discusses young people’s attitudes and beliefs about interventions to reduce the prevalence of youth sexting. In doing so, the book critically engages with young people’s perspectives in order make practical recommendations for encouraging a ‘digital sexual ethics’ based on rights to bodily and sexual expression, autonomy and integrity, positive bystander intervention, and anti-victim blaming and abuse messages. This book will be of great interest to scholars and students of criminology, education, social care, sociology and health. It will also be a valuable resource for those working in educational and social care settings such as sex educators, youth and social workers, youth counsellors and mental health professionals.
