Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984, this collection of original papers highlights the major problems and challenges that lie ahead in U.S.-Japanese energy relations. Energy cooperation, both through joint projects and bilateral planning, has become an important barometer of the U.S. diplomatic relationship with Japan, as evidenced by the high-level U.S.-Japan Energy Working Group set up in January 1984 following Prime Minister Nakasone's visit to Washington. Contributions to this book detail the problems posed by energy security differences and uncertain oil markets; U.S. crude oil exports to Japan; and nuclear, coal solar-energy; and they consider the prospects for conflict over investment in Siberia and Asia

Download or read book The Standard Vacuum Oil Company and United States East Asian Policy 1933 1941 written by Irvine H. Anderson Jr. and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oil was a basic source of conflict between the United States and Japan. This book examines the role played by the Standard-Vacuum Oil Company in the crisis that led to Pearl Harbor. "Stanvac" was the largest American supplier of oil to Japan and represented the single largest American direct investment in Asia before the war. In the context of Stanvac's relations with various governments, the author examines the ways in which United States petroleum policy was formulated and the arrangements by which Japan sought to increase its oil reserves. He provides new insight into the impact of the financial freeze of July 1941, the origins of the Pacific War, and the complexities of oil diplomacy. Originally published in 1975. Book Dynamics of Japan s Trade and Industrial Policy in the Post Rapid Growth Era 1980 2000

Download or read book Dynamics of Japan s Trade and Industrial Policy in the Post Rapid Growth Era 1980 2000 written by RIETI and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-08 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides an in-depth examination of Japan's policy responses to the economic challenges of the 1980s and '90s. While MITI's earlier role in promoting rapid growth has been addressed in other studies, this volume, based on official records and exhaustive interviews, is the first to examine the aftermath of rapid growth and the evolution of MITI's interpretation of the economy's changing needs. Covering such topics as the oil shocks, trade conflict with the United States, and the rise and collapse of the so-called bubble economy, it presents a detailed analysis and evaluation of how these challenges were interpreted by government officials, the kinds of policies that were enacted, the extent to which policy aims were realized, and lessons for the longer term. This book is recommended especially to officials of countries concerned about the challenges that follow on high economic growth and to readers interested in Japan’s contemporary economic history.

Book Two Hungry Giants

Download or read book Two Hungry Giants written by Raymond Vernon and published by Cambridge, Mass. : Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book that explores the relationship between the United States and Japan in terms of the competition for industrial raw materials. With startling consistency, their responses to similar problems appear to stem from each country's history and culture, almost as if the country had no choice but to pursue the policy selected. Vernon suggests that in this field of policy, political leaders are prisoners of their national environment more than anyone--including the leaders themselves--has been prepared to recognize. Examining in turn the world markets in oil, aluminum, copper, and steel, Vernon shows how Japan has learned to cope with its have-not status, using flexible and inventive national policies designed to help industries acquire what they need. The United States, on the other hand, lacking an explicit and consistent national policy, is torn between protecting domestic producers of these resources and trying to develop dependable sources of supplies abroad. The result is a haphazard and unstable raw-materials policy. This unique commingling of political and economic analysis will appeal not only to scholars of international relations, domestic political behavior, and commodity markets but also to the informed layman who wishes to understand what is likely to happen as two economic superpowers range the world to satisfy their appetites for raw materials.
