This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Government Ownership V. Private Ownership of Railways in Canada The true relation of the railway to the people or state may be set forth in the following propositions: First: The railways of a country are the main highways of a country. Second: There is no source of revenue for a railway other than the rates imposed upon the people for the carrying of their persons and their goods. Third: This revenue is raised, not from any hidden fountain of wealth within the railway itself, but from the earnings of the people, whose labor and money furnish the traffic. Fourth: By the division of labor in modern civilized life ever: one who earns or spends money contributes directly or indirectly to the cost of transportation, and this cost enters into every article used by every citizen. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketch of State Railway Ownership One further explanation is necessary. Nothing was said of Canada in the paper as originally written. Not because the history of Government ownership of railways in the democratic Dominion of Canada is lacking in interest, but for purely personal reasons. In the autumn of 1916, before I had finished writing the paper, I was invited to become a member of a Royal Commission to advise the Dominion Govern' ment as to its future railway policy. On Canadian affairs, therefore, my mouth was closed. I am now free, however, to deal with the story. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Briefs of Arguments Against Public Ownership The State management of the Western Railway has been from the very start, and continues to be, a great financial and technical disappointment. For the first two years the whole line was in absolutely chaotic con dition. The trains were never on time and the worst possible accidents were continually happening, whereas under the old management not a single passenger had been killed in ten years. After many experiments, the new management was forced to reduce the number of trains and cut down the speed of the principal ones. To - day the technical side is better than it was at first, but not better than it was under the old company. The financial results, however, could not be much worse than they are, and are a great load on the State Treasury. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Presumed Dedication of Private Property to Public Use, in Its Application to Railroads In the April (1881) number of the "North American Review," I published an article on "The Ownership of Railroad Property." It was the object of that article to maintain that the property of railroad corporations, which has been purchased by private funds, has all the attributes of private property; and that, unless the charter of the corporation, or some law of the State which, by fair implication, or by express provision, is to be regarded as a part of the contract between the State and the corporation, has reserved to the State a power to regulate the rates of fare and freight, the corporation has the same right to fix its own rates as the owner of any other property has to determine the price for which he will allow the use of his property, and will render his personal services in connection with that use. Book Reforming Infrastructure

Download or read book Reforming Infrastructure written by Ioannis Nicolaos Kessides and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2004 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electricity, natural gas, telecommunications, railways, and water supply, are often vertically and horizontally integrated state monopolies. This results in weak services, especially in developing and transition economies, and for poor people. Common problems include low productivity, high costs, bad quality, insufficient revenue, and investment shortfalls. Many countries over the past two decades have restructured, privatized and regulated their infrastructure. This report identifies the challenges involved in this massive policy redirection. It also assesses the outcomes of these changes, as well as their distributional consequences for poor households and other disadvantaged groups. It recommends directions for future reforms and research to improve infrastructure performance, identifying pricing policies that strike a balance between economic efficiency and social equity, suggesting rules governing access to bottleneck infrastructure facilities, and proposing ways to increase poor people's access to these crucial services.
