Book Government House and Western Australian Society

Download or read book Government House and Western Australian Society written by Jeremy C. Martens and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a lineage stretching back to 1829, Government House and its grounds are among Perth's most important and iconic historic monuments. This social history of Government House uncovers life stories of the scores of people who have lived and worked in this grand Victorian mansion and who played a crucial role in the creation and maintenance of Western Australia's social order in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Intriguing stories, such as the 'murder in the ballroom' and a young royal's impressions of the sandy colonial town, are woven into this thoroughly researched account. The book's handsome design showcases images from the earliest days of the Swan River settlement, royal visits, and the evolving appearance of Government House over two centuries. It also describes the design, construction and furnishing of the residence, and the cultivation and landscaping of the surrounding domain.

Book Jeremy Bentham and Australia

Download or read book Jeremy Bentham and Australia written by Tim Causer and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2022-04-28 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeremy Bentham and Australia is a collection of scholarship inspired by Bentham’s writings on Australia. These writings are available for the first time in authoritative form in Panopticon versus New South Wales and other writings on Australia, a volume in The Collected Works of Jeremy Bentham published by UCL Press. In the present collection, a distinguished group of authors reflect on Bentham’s Australian writings, making original contributions to existing debates and setting agendas for future ones. In the first part of the collection, the works are placed in their historical contexts, while the second part provides a critical assessment of the historical accuracy and plausibility of Bentham’s arguments against transportation from the British Isles. In the third part, attention turns to Bentham’s claim that New South Wales had been illegally founded and to the imperial and colonial constitutional ramifications of that claim. Here, authors also discuss Bentham’s work of 1831 in which he supports the establishment of a free colony on the southern coast of Australia. In the final part, authors shed light on the history of Bentham’s panopticon penitentiary scheme, his views on the punishment and reform of criminals and what role, if any, religion had to play in that regard, and discuss apparently panopticon-inspired institutions built in the Australian colonies. This collection will appeal to readers interested in Bentham’s life and thought, the history of transportation from the British Isles, and of British penal policy more generally, colonial and imperial history, Indigenous history, legal and constitutional history, and religious history.

Book Dancing in Shadows

Download or read book Dancing in Shadows written by Anna Haebich and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2018 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dancing in Shadows explores the power of Indigenous performance pitted against the forces of settler colonisation. Historian Anna Haebich documents how the Nyungar people of Western Australia strategically and courageously adapted their rich performance culture to survive the catastrophe that engulfed them, and continue to generously share their culture, history, and language in theatre. In public corroborees, they performed their sovereignty to the colonists, and in community-only gatherings they danced and sang to bring forth resilience and spiritual healing. Pushed away by the colonists and denied their culture and lands, they continued to live and perform in the shadows over the years in combinations of the old and the new, including indigenised settler songs and dances. Nyungar people survived, and they now number around 40,000 people and constitute the largest Aboriginal nation in the Australian settler state. The ancient family lineages live in city suburbs and country towns, and they continue to perform to celebrate their ancestors and to strengthen community well-being by being together. Dancing in Shadows sheds light on the little-known history of Nyungar performance. [Subject: Theatre Studies, Sociology, History, Australian History, Aboriginal Studies]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Second Sudanese Civil war, thousands of South Sudanese boys were displaced from their villages or orphaned in attacks from northern government troops. Many became refugees in Ethiopia. There, in 1989, teacher and community leader Mecak Ajang Alaak assumed care of the Lost Boys in a bid to protect them from becoming child soldiers. So began a four year journey from Ethiopia to Sudan and on to the safety of a Kenyan refugee camp. Together they endured starvation, animal attacks, and the horrors of land mines and aerial bombardments. This eyewitness account by Mecak Ajang Alaak's son, Yuot, is the extraordinary true story of a man who never ceased to believe that the pen is mightier than the gun.
