Book Improving Crop Estimates by Integrating Multiple Data Sources

Download or read book Improving Crop Estimates by Integrating Multiple Data Sources written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is the primary statistical data collection agency within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). NASS conducts hundreds of surveys each year and prepares reports covering virtually every aspect of U.S. agriculture. Among the small-area estimates produced by NASS are county-level estimates for crops (planted acres, harvested acres, production, and yield by commodity) and for cash rental rates for irrigated cropland, nonirrigated cropland, and permanent pastureland. Key users of these county-level estimates include USDA's Farm Services Agency (FSA) and Risk Management Agency (RMA), which use the estimates as part of their processes for distributing farm subsidies and providing farm insurance, respectively. Improving Crop Estimates by Integrating Multiple Data Sources assesses county-level crop and cash rents estimates, and offers recommendations on methods for integrating data sources to provide more precise county-level estimates of acreage and yield for major crops and of cash rents by land use. This report considers technical issues involved in using the available data sources, such as methods for integrating the data, the assumptions underpinning the use of each source, the robustness of the resulting estimates, and the properties of desirable estimates of uncertainty.

Book Livestock Dairy and Poultry Outlook

Download or read book Livestock Dairy and Poultry Outlook written by Kenneth Mathews and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the last quarter of 2015 begins, production data show that total red meat and poultry production, aggregated over the first three quarters of 2015, increased by less than 1 percent over the same period of 2014. In the first three quarters of 2015, beef production is about 3 percent below production in the same period last year. Cattle prices so far in 2015 have averaged almost 3 percent above prices in the same period of 2014. Production effects of disease outbreaks link the pork and poultry sectors, but in divergent directions: the pork sector continues to recover from the effects of porcine epidemic diarrhea (PEDv) outbreaks last year, with total production in the first three quarters of 2015 almost 8 percent ahead of the same period in 2014. The poultry sector is recovering from Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), the effects of which has fallen so far on the turkey sector (2 percent lower production) and the egg sector (5 percent lower production). Turkey prices have averaged almost 6 percent above the same period last year; average egg prices are almost 36 percent above the same period of 2014. Broiler production is up in 2015 by 4 percent.

This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Government Crop Reports: Their Value, Scope, and Preparation But even those farmers who do not keep posted are indirectly benefited by the publication of Government. Crop reports, for these reports check and lessen the injurious effects of false reports sent' out in the interest of speculators. As a police and constable force tends to check but not entirely prevent crime, so Government reports check but do not entirely prevent the circulation of false and injurious reports. The more certainty there is as to the supply of and demand for a crop the less hazard or speculation there is in the business Of dis tributing the crop, to the benefit, in the long run, of both producer and consumer.
