Book Above the Din of War

Download or read book Above the Din of War written by Peter Eichstaedt and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What will happen when international forces finally vacate Afghanistan? The answer to that question is unknown, but if there is any hope for Afghanistan, veteran journalist Peter Eichstaedt asserts, it is with its people. After spending 2004 in Afghanistan working for the nonprofit Institute for War and Peace Reporting and helping build Afghanistan's first independent news agency, Eichstaedt returned to Kabul in 2010. As he worked with Afghan journalists to document their history and collective struggles, he realized that although Kabul itself appeared cleaned up, with freshly paved roads, the optimism of the newly liberated capital had faded under the rise of the Taliban insurgency. Eichstaedt subsequently crisscrossed the country to interview an astonishing array of Afghans. In Above the Din of War, he shares these conversations, including emotional and critical commentary and opinions from a former warlord, a Taliban judge, victims of self-immolation, poppy growers, courageous women parliamentarians, would-be suicide bombers, a besieged video store owner, frightened mullahs, and desperate archaeologists. Providing a forum for the everyday people of Afghanistan to be heard, Eichstaedt reveals the truth behind the calculated rhetoric of war, politics, and diplomacy, and suggests a path forward toward a sustainable future for Afghanistan and southern Asia.

Book Derailing Democracy in Afghanistan

Download or read book Derailing Democracy in Afghanistan written by Noah Coburn and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-07 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume shows how Afghani elections since 2004 have threatened to derail the country’s fledgling democracy. Examining presidential, parliamentary, and provincial council elections and conducting interviews with more than one hundred candidates, officials, community leaders, and voters, the text shows how international approaches to Afghani elections have misunderstood the role of local actors, who have hijacked elections in their favor, alienated communities, undermined representative processes, and fueled insurgency, fostering a dangerous disillusionment among Afghan voters.

Book Do Ask Do Tell

Download or read book Do Ask Do Tell written by Bill Boushka and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As our culture has placed increasing importance on the individual, it may be time to consider further reinforcing our rights. Individual liberties have recently come under severe stress; not only from the necessary war on terrorism but also from corporate misconduct and well-founded concerns about managing exploding technology, as well as more traditional questions about cultural traditions and family values. Many of the affirmative protections in the original Bill of Rights are largely procedural. It would be well to list and review our fundamental rights with a conceptual bottom-up review. These rights would include psychological rights to express to others who we are as individuals and would invoke social rights to ensure basic fairness to all people. How do we reinforce individual rights and, simultaneously, maintain stability, security and social justice in our society? With many issues, the free market provides a much more dependable means of regulation than can government. But there are some areas where law is essential to maintain real freedom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Abortion. Ukraine. Voting rights. Climate change. These are just a few of the issues that Fortune 500 CEOs addressed publicly in the past twelve months. Speaking Out: The New Rules of Business Leadership Communication defines the changing landscape of CEO communication at a time when corporate leaders are expected to navigate an increasing range of complex political and social issues. Skeptics have already dubbed this change the victory of "woke" politics over the corporate sector. Others warn CEOs about the "talking trap" of speaking out on every issue du jour. But these critiques overlook the need for corporate leaders to manage political and social risks. Chief executives whose only strategy is to avoid risk by saying nothing do so at their peril. The ultimate question is not just what leaders say, but what they do. Speaking Out provides case studies of leaders who have spoken out and backed words with action, as well as others who have had mixed records on accountability, failed to show progress on public commitments, or faced consequences for taking a stance. Speaking Out offers a new lens for understanding the difference between PR efforts that can be easily dismissed as spin and authentic communication that enhances credibility and trust"--

Book Corruption and Constitutionalism in Africa

Download or read book Corruption and Constitutionalism in Africa written by Charles Manga Fombad and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stellenbosch Handbooks in African Constitutional Law series engages with contemporary issues of constitutionalism in Africa. The first experiments in democratic and constitutional governance in Africa that started after independence were soon overtaken by dictatorships, and arbitrary and repressive rule. The pulling down of the Berlin Wall followed by the collapse of the Soviet Union unleashed new forces of democratization and new hopes for the establishment and entrenchment of constitutional governance and constitutionalism in Africa. This series is designed to identify, analyse, and promote serious discussion of the critical issues that can shape, refine, and deepen the consolidation of constitutionalism in Africa. Although comparative constitutional law has become a major field of legal scholarship, most of the extensive research that has been carried out has focused on long-established democracies. The only African country that has attracted sustained research interest from a comparative law perspective is South Africa. The few books that present perspectives on African comparative constitutional law focus narrowly and exclusively on developments in either Anglophone, Francophone, or Arabophone Africa without cutting across these divides. Yet, since 1990, Africa has been at the centre of profound and far-reaching constitutional developments. Little comparative research has been carried out to understand the nature of these constitutional changes, to review their impact on the ethos of constitutionalism on the continent, and to explore prospects for the future. The series aims to stimulate interest in comparative constitutional research and the different constitutional traditions operating in Africa by presenting a comprehensive analysis of the latest thinking, research, and practice. In this way, the series intends to fill the huge gap in the existing literature on comparative African constitutional law as well as point out to directions for future research. Book jacket.

Book 9 11 The New Evidence

  • Author : Ian Henshall
  • Publisher : Constable
  • Release : 2021-09-09
  • ISBN : 1472147162
  • Pages : 329 pages

Download or read book 9 11 The New Evidence written by Ian Henshall and published by Constable. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original 9/11 Revealed attracted lavish praise from reviewers in the Daily Mail and Sunday Times for the 'huge gaps' it exposed in the official 9/11 story. It became a non-fiction bestseller despite a wall of silence by the broadcast media and condemnation in a special web page set up by the US State Department. Since then the story has produced many sinister new twists, including: Pentagon whistleblowers have accused the 'Independent 9/11 Commission' of lying; long-suppressed eyewitness testimony has been released confirming multiple explosions in the Twin Towers before and during their collapses; the much vaunted video purporting to prove that Flight 77 hit the Pentagon showed nothing at all; and an analysis of terrorist trials and arrests since 2001 indicates that far from the '600 Al Qaeda sleeper cells in the US' (CIA) there were none at all. In this sequel to 9/11 Revealed, Ian Henshall examines the precedents of black operations by the US/UK, from Northern Ireland to Italy, from Vietnam to Kosovo; he looks at the various 9/11 theories, including the latest twists in the official story, and tests them against the evidence. Finally, he asks what might happen when the storm of popular outrage collides with the regime in Washington and London and outlines the radical changes needed if Washington and London are ever again to function as genuine democracies.
