Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gospel Truths: Presenting Christ and the Christian Life Response to repeated appeals from the people who heard them from the pulpit. With some slight discrimina tion, they have been chosen from a cabinet of upwards of two thousand discourses. There hasbeen little or no change, except where some purely local reference demanded it. In their preparation for pulpit use, two thoughts were constantly kept in mind: to preach Christ as the Way, the Truth, and the Life, with all their redemptive significance, and to implant in the minds and hearts of those who listened to their deliverance, those principles which underlie Christian character and conduct. There is no effort to develop distinctive doctrines; yet every sermon aims to have some fundamental doctrine as its basic part. It is the living relations of the doctrine, the doctrine in actual life, that is designed, above all else, in this series. The heart right, the life in line with it the doctrine sound, the practice conformed to it: such has been, throughout, the underlying thought. As this new volume goes forth with its message of truth and grace, may it be instrumental in quickening in the hearts of those who read it a deepening sense of spiritual certitudes and an increasing purpose to realize them in their lives. Book The Gospel in the Gospels Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gospel in the Gospels Classic Reprint written by William Porcher Dubose and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels The title of the present volume is intended to indicate that, while it aims to be an exposition of the whole Gospel of Jesus Christ, it does not purpose to be a whole or final exposition of that Gospel. It looks forward definitely to a further and fuller expression of it. We have here to do with the Gospel, not in its developed utterance as that of the New Testament or of the Church, but only so far as it is contained in our canonical Gospels or can by ourselves be deduced from them. My own position is that, while the Gospel as an act or fact is complete in Jesus Christ Himself, the rationale of its operation in human salvation is best interpreted and stated by St. Paul. My true objective point has therefore been the completer construction of the Gospel according to St. Paul, to be treated in a volume to follow the present one. That the epistles of St. Paul are an interpretation only, and not a transformation nor even an essential modification, of the Gospel of our Lord is - next to the hope of casting a single new ray of light upon the nature of the Gospel itself - the point which I have most at heart to prove in the end. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel According to Saint Paul IN advocating and pressing any particular point of View, one is inevitably liable to press it unduly and at the expense of other points of View. In the quest of truth this danger ought not to be too much of a deter rent to either freedom of thought or boldness of expres sion. The ultimate aim of each one of us should be not to save ourselves from error but to advance the truth. We may safely rely upon it that our truth will in the end be accepted and our error corrected. If I had been too much afraid of going wrong I should have made no progress in growing right; who of us that has really thought or spoken may not say that of himself? For my own part, I have not merely tradi tionally believed but become personally convinced that there is a truth of the Scriptures and that there is a mind of the Church; and that each of these will take care of itself as against the infinite errors and vagaries of individual thinkers and writers. I have in my mind not only an implicit faith but a rational science or philosophy of these things, which at least satisfies myself and gives me security and rest from the fear. Book Some Fundamental Gospel Truths in Modern Light A Book for Present Day Use

Download or read book Some Fundamental Gospel Truths in Modern Light A Book for Present Day Use written by Joseph A. Cottam and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Fundamental Gospel Truths in Modern Light; A Book for Present Day Use: Being a Number of Sermons, Talks, and Articles, on Subjects of Interest to Preachers, Teachers, and Christian Believers The topics included in this work have been written with a definite object. The present times call for a statement of Evangelical Truths in the language of the people. Despite the broadening light, heavy mists still hang over portions of the theological field. In no corner of it is the fog denser than that where lie the questions relating to knowledge and revelation. Examples are continually occurring of experienced theologians entering this region, to flounder hopelessly in its opaque atmosphere, involving themselves and their followers in dire confusions and contradictions. The time has surely arrived when it is proper to assert, that, in the thinking and preaching of to-day, there is confessedly much that is vague, misty, uncertain, negative, unsatisfactory, and even positively erroneous. The doctrines of many are not orthodox, and the spiritually minded man must of necessity mark the fallibility of such statements as have been preached and printed, and endeavor to point out where they are wrong. We admit that we need to have a restatement of Christian doctrine from time to time which may be brought clearly up to date and modern in its light. All study is now carried on by the comparative method; there is a science of anthropology, and a science of comparative religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of Paul: The Gospel of Jesus Have no doubt been largely determined by the writings of the Apostle Paul. The statements of the Saviour regard ing His own person and work, plain and pregnant as these are, run into a peculiar and definite mould when passing through the mind of Paul, and come forth stamped with his own individuality. In more recent times some critics have endeavoured to make out that the writings of the great Apostle set forth a different gospel from that contained in the sayings of Jesus as recorded in the Synoptic Gospels. We recognise the profound truth of Peter's words, Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. But it does not follow that the same Spirit of Truth who spake in and through Jesus Christ (heb. Ii. Does not. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the New Testament The world, indeed, into which Christianity came was painfully aware of the need for salvation. Before the first Christian missionaries started out, zealous preachers of other faiths were abroad in the Roman Empire, offering their various remedies to the sick soul. Some of these remedies bore a curious family likeness to some of the most modern ways of salvation, and a brief survey of them will not lead us too far afield. The thoughts of men, in spite of all changes, tend to run in a comparatively small variety of channels; and after all, we are, in a broad View of the limitless sweep of history, not so very far removed even in time from these first-century seekers of truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ Is All: The Gospel of the Pentateuch; Genesis But what is the eldest wonder, which steps forth to usher in the train of harmony and grace? It is light. Do you ask what is the chamber of its birth? And what the art, by which it is composed? The reply is, God said, Let there be light: and there was light. To khow more is impossible. And it is impossible, just because more knowledge would neither tend to profit, nor to good. There are, how ever, truths linked with light, which are open to our earnest search. It is a casket rich in Gospel jewels. In its fair form we see the fairer features of the Lord of light. The Holy Spirit - no doubtful guide proclaims, That was the true light, which lighteth every man, which cometh into the world. Jesus, too, exalts it as His emblem, when he instructs, I am the light of the world; he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. The prophet, too, gazing on the rays of Christ, rings, The people that walked in darkness have men a great light. The apostle, intent on Jesus, exhorts, Show forth the praises of Him, who hath called you out of darkness into His marvellous ligh We should close our eyes, then, on the high purposes of light, if we failed to trace therein the transcendent beauties of salvation' s Dayspring.
