This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culture and the Gospel, or a Plea for the Sufficiency of the Gospel to Meet the Wants of an Enlightened Age Among the earliest traditions of our race is one of a golden age, when, according to the Greeks and Romans, Saturn ruled the earth. He, fearing that he should be dethroned by one of his sons, devoured his children at their birth. But Jupiter was concealed by his mother, and at an early age deposed his father, and reigned in his stead. Christianity also has its tradition of a golden age, when love reigned, and sorrow was unknown. Its records speak of the advent of a hostile power, of the entrance of Satan, sin, death, and all our woe. But they know nothing of another divinity able to wrest the sceptre from the hands of Him who first held the throne. Book The Fourth Gospel in First Century Media Culture

Download or read book The Fourth Gospel in First Century Media Culture written by Anthony Le Donne and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-05-03 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Werner Kelber's The Oral and the Written Gospel substantially challenged predominant paradigms for understanding early Jesus traditions and the formation of written Gospels. Since that publication, a more precise and complex picture of first-century media culture has emerged. Yet while issues of orality, aurality, performance, and mnemonics are now well voiced in Synoptic Studies, Johannine scholars remain largely unaware of such issues and their implications. The highly respected contributors to this book seek to fill this lacuna by exploring various applications of orality, literacy, memory, and performance theories to the Johannine Literature in hopes of opening new avenues for future discussion. Part 1 surveys the scope of the field by introducing the major themes of ancient media studies and noting their applicability to the Fourth Gospel and the Johannine Epistles. Part 2 analyzes major themes in the Johannine Literature from a media perspective, while Part 3 features case studies of specific texts. Two responses by Gail O'Day and Barry Schwartz complete the volume.

Book The New Social Order Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Social Order Classic Reprint written by John Fordyce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-04-26 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Social Order The following pages have been written for, and they are addressed to, the People. For the learned and the curious, there are abundant opportunities of becoming acquainted with the triumphs of the Gospel in the early pagan world; even within the last few years, several treatises have appeared on this suggestive theme. But these books are gener ally large, and they discuss questions that are not of engrossing interest to the Many. The author has tried to avoid all details and discussions not likely to attract the general reader, and to present a brief and popular account of some of the changes wrought in personal character and in social life by the Spirit of Jesus Christ. With what degree of success he has accomplished his self-imposed task, it is for others rather than himself to determine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Marvelous Work and a Wonder: The Gospel Restored Prefaces, as a rule, are not read, and we do not intend to bore the reader with any unaccepted matter. Perhaps, however, we may be permitted to observe that to arrive at proper opinions concerning any doctrine or denomination it is but fair that we reserve our verdict until it is heard in its own behalf. Rendering a decision previous to this would result in deprivation to self of the information sought, and do injustice to the subject considered. We are aware that time is valuable and that the sundry essential labors of life, engaging nearly all the attention, make it necessary that Whatever time there be to spare should be devoted to the most important questions. Book Christ and Culture Revisited

Download or read book Christ and Culture Revisited written by D. A. Carson and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Called to live in the world, but not to be of it, Christians must maintain a balancing act that becomes more precarious the further our culture departs from its Judeo-Christian roots. How should members of the church interact with such a culture, especially as deeply enmeshed as most of us have become? In this award-winning book -- now in paperback and with a new preface -- D. A. Carson applies his masterful touch to that problem. After exploring the classic typology of H. Richard Niebuhr with its five Christ-culture options, Carson offers an even more comprehensive paradigm for informing the Christian worldview. More than just theoretical, Christ and Culture Revisited is a practical guide for helping Christians untangle current messy debates about living in the world.

Book Order and History

  • Author : Eric Voegelin
  • Publisher : University of Missouri Press
  • Release : 2000
  • ISBN : 0826263909
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Order and History written by Eric Voegelin and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation In Search of Order brings to a conclusion Eric Voegelin's masterwork, Order and History. Voegelin conceived Order and History as "a philosophical inquiry concerning the principal types of order of human existence in society and history as well as the corresponding symbolic forms." In previous volumes, Voegelin discussed the imperial organizations of the ancient Near East and their existence in the form of the cosmological myth; the revelatory form of existence in history, developed by Moses and the prophets of the Chosen People; the polis, the Hellenic myth, and the development of philosophy as the symbolism of order; and the evolution of the great religions, especially Christianity. This final volume of Order and History is devoted to the elucidation of the experience of transcendence that Voegelin discussed in earlier volumes. He aspires to show in a theoretically acute manner the exact nature of transcendental experiences. Voegelin's philosophical inquiry unfolds in the historical context of the great symbolic enterprise of restating man's humanity under the horizon of the modern sciences and in resistance to the manifold forces of our age that deform human existence. His stature as one of the major philosophical forces of the twentieth century clearly emerges from these concluding pages. In Search of Order deepens and clarifies the meditative movement that Voegelin, now in reflective distance to his own work, sees as having been operative throughout his search. Because of Voegelin's death, on January 19, 1985, In Search of Order is briefer than it otherwise might have been; however, the theoretical presentation that he had set for himself is essentially completed here. Just as this volume serves Voegelin well in his striking analyses of Hegel, Hesiod, and Plato, it will serve as a model for the reader's own efforts in search of order.

Book Gospel Culture and Transformation

Download or read book Gospel Culture and Transformation written by Chris Sugden and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-05-13 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gospel, Culture and Transformation explores the practice of mission especially in relation to transforming cultures and communities. Mission as Transformation has become a mainstream definition of mission in orthodox Christian circles, especially in the Two-Thirds World and among those involved in ministry with the poor. Vinay Samuel has played a leading role in developing this understanding of mission which he defines as follows: Transformation is to enable God's vision of society to be actualized in all relationships, social, economic and spiritual, so that God's will may be reflected in human society and his love be experienced by all communities, especially the poor. Christian faith is faith in the incarnation of God in a particular place in history so all theology should have to do with the particular. This work studies mission in the work of the leading Indian Mission Theologian, Canon Dr. Vinay Samuel between 1984-1996. It is taken from the author's larger work Seeking the Asian Face of Jesus (Wipf and Stock, 2011). Lamin Sanneh (D. Willis Professor of Mission and World Christianity, Yale University) wrote of that book, Dr. Sugden brings a sharp theological focus to bear on issues of context, identity and cultural particularity . . . The literature on contextual theology and situational ethics now has a standard to rise to. A companion volume, Mission as Transformation, is edited by Viney Samuel and Chris Sugden (Wipf and Stock, 2009).

Book The Gospel According to Christ

Download or read book The Gospel According to Christ written by Charles Carroll Albertson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel According to Christ: And Other Sermons One beauty of this book is found in the fact that Mr. Albertson does not keep the apostles forever on trial for perjury, but sends them about doing good everywhere. This is not a volume of apologetics. It is rather a new and gentle reincarnation of New Testament utterances. It does not advance upon us with the fixed bayonet: of the old heavy infantry of compulsion; but it glides quietly along in front of us, beckoning us onward and upward to higherlevels of life and wider horizons of privilege. It is a Gos pel of this time and for this people. It credits our age with having reached the point where gravitation, shifting, turns the other way. The public mind is fed and overfed on secular informa tion and stimulated with brilliant fiction. The ever rattling presses daily carpet every city and town with reading matter of the earth, earthy. Magazines and textbooks familiarize us with a vast nomenclature, partly scientific and wholly secular, till there seems neither opportunity nor desire to feed or develop our spiritual natures. This volume, waving an olive branch and offering peace, slides into the moving mass of literature, and pro poses to do its full share in meeting the essential wants of the people. It makes no apology, for it offers no affront. It stands on its own feet. It extends its own hands. Beneath its feet is the solid rock of Divine Revelation. In its hands are peace for time and life for eternity. When you have read its pages. Applied its precepts, and appropriated its revelations, I am sure you will be better and stronger. C. H. Fowler. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church Together is a Christian leadership book designed to give pastors, church leaders, and church members a working plan to overcome the greatest underlying threat to the church today, individualism, through five relationships of surrender which correlate to the five core values of the Church of We. Part One examines the three rotten fruits of individualism within the Church of Me--consumerism, pragmatism, and the extremes of legalism and liberalism--and how to spot each of these problems. Part Two offers a solution on what it will take for churches to make a healthy transition from the Church of Me to the Church of We. Church Together, for this reason, gives churches a manageable plan to defy the individualistic spirit of the age as they become the Church of We in the Age of Me.
