Book excerpt: The Knights of Excelter team up with Lockharst scientists to unravel the meaning of obscure coded equations. This leads to the opening of a portal into another dimension, an alien realm where Brandon Chadler suspects his father, an archaeologist, to have gone missing years ago. Mira's dream visions, Irish folklore of the Gomtrell community, and some ancient clay tablets offer clues that reveal substantial evidence supporting Allen Chadler's disappearance into this other dimensional realm. Follow the adventures of Captain Chadler, and his search team, as they explore a realm previously dismissed by the academic community of Scotwold and the normal world. A realm kept in utmost secrecy by the descendants of Irish and Scottish settlers from past centuries to the present. They discover the indigenous tribes of the canyons, the Ubolozimbe, in this new realm; a people who have learned to tolerate the presence of settlers on their sacred lands. Brandon and Mira's romantic relationship flourishes as they explore the sparkling realm of Gomtrellia, even as time is swiftly passing in Scotwold. And the only link to their previous life is through a mysterious boy with clairvoyant vision and the image of the Great Gray Owl. Sylas Mervinstone returns in this book with a vastly altered appearance due to an elixir of youth which he keeps under lock and key. The Dragon Lord breaks his own well-established rules to accommodate the under-aged Craig Zutherlan, the only person who can make contact with Mira through barriers of light, time, and space between dimensional realms. Book At the Mercy of Their Clothes

Download or read book At the Mercy of Their Clothes written by Celia Marshik and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-29 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In much of modern fiction, it is the clothes that make the character. Garments embody personal and national histories. They convey wealth, status, aspiration, and morality (or a lack thereof). They suggest where characters have been and where they might be headed, as well as whether or not they are aware of their fate. At the Mercy of Their Clothes explores the agency of fashion in modern literature, its reflection of new relations between people and things, and its embodiment of a rapidly changing society confronted by war and cultural and economic upheaval. In some cases, people need garments to realize themselves. In other cases, the clothes control the person who wears them. Celia Marshik's study combines close readings of modernist and middlebrow works, a history of Britain in the early twentieth century, and the insights of thing theory. She focuses on four distinct categories of modern clothing: the evening gown, the mackintosh, the fancy dress costume, and secondhand attire. In their use of these clothes, we see authors negotiate shifting gender roles, weigh the value of individuality during national conflict, work through mortality, and depict changing class structures. Marshik's dynamic comparisons put Ulysses in conversation with Rebecca, Punch cartoons, articles in Vogue, and letters from consumers, illuminating opinions about specific garments and a widespread anxiety that people were no more than what they wore. Throughout her readings, Marshik emphasizes the persistent animation of clothing—and objectification of individuals—in early-twentieth-century literature and society. She argues that while artists and intellectuals celebrated the ability of modern individuals to remake themselves, a range of literary works and popular publications points to a lingering anxiety about how political, social, and economic conditions continued to constrain the individual.

Book A Dress of Violet Taffeta

Download or read book A Dress of Violet Taffeta written by Tessa Arlen and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sumptuous novel based on the fascinating true story of La Belle Époque icon Lucy, Lady Duff Gordon, who shattered the boundaries of fashion with her magnificently sensual and enchantingly unique design from the USA Today bestselling author of In Royal Service to the Queen. Lucy Duff Gordon knows she is talented. She sees color, light, and texture in ways few people can begin to imagine. But is the male dominated world of haute couture, who would use her art for their own gain, ready for her? When she is deserted by her wealthy husband, Lucy is left penniless with an aging mother and her five-year-old daughter to support. Desperate to survive, Lucy turns to her one true talent to make a living. As a little girl, the dresses she made for her dolls were the envy of her group of playmates. Now, she uses her creative designs and her remarkable eye for color to take her place in the fashion world—failure is not an option. Then, on a frigid night in 1912, Lucy’s life changes once more, when she becomes one of 706 people to survive the sinking of the Titanic. She could never have imagined the effects the disaster would have on her fashion label Lucile, her marriage to her second husband, and her legacy. But no matter what life throws at her, Lucy will live on as a trailblazing and innovative fashion icon, never letting go of what she worked so hard to earn. This is her story.
