Book Soviet Foreign Policy in East Asia and the Pacific Under Gorbachev

Download or read book Soviet Foreign Policy in East Asia and the Pacific Under Gorbachev written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gorbachev's Vladivostok speech was a logical follow-on to his evolving policy towards the region since becoming General Secretary. In it he sought to downplay the military component of his Asian strategy in an attempt to gain the greater economic and political leverage denied his predecessors. Although he is anxious to achieve as many improvements with as many Asian nations as he can, the lack of substantial new proposals demonstrates that Gorbachev remains more capable of altering his style than the substance of Soviet Foreign Policy. Gorbachev's predecessors did so badly in the region-pushing, threatening, sneering and spying while being unable to offer tangible economic benefits-that Gorbachev may make immediate headway by simply behaving normally. Beyond that, if successful domestic economic reforms generate Soviet trade with the region and if Gorbachev is able to prevail over forces that resist making substantial diplomatic concessions, further penetration into the region will become possible. The Soviet leadership has realized that over the past decade, the Asian-Pacific region has greatly increased its importance to the world. Moscow also believes that the Pacific will play a crucial role in deciding possible future political structure since the four major powers (Soviet Union, United States, China, Japan are located there. Strategically, Soviet fears are of becoming susceptible to the opening of a second front in a war with NATO and of growing vulnerable to increasing Sino-Japanese-American cooperation. The Soviets will combine veiled and not-so-veiled threats with high-sounding proposals for arms control agreements in order to build public political pressures in the region against security cooperation with the U.S., and with a crucial goal of hobbling the U.S.'s influence in the regions. Of grave concern to the U.S. is the historical Soviet method of activating their foreign policy by a combination of threats and promises.

Book Security Arms Control in the North Pacific

Download or read book Security Arms Control in the North Pacific written by A. Mack and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-26 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988, Security & Arms Control in the North Pacific is the first book to focus on the question of North Pacific arms control. Some chapters examine the problems and prospects for arms control in particular states – the USA, erstwhile USSR, China, Japan, the two Koreas, and Canada; others focus on particular issues- the nuclear infrastructure, controlling the arms trade, confidence building, and naval arms control. A unifying theme of this collection is the tension between military and non-military approaches to security, between threat and reassurance and between deterrence and confidence building. This comprehensive book is a must read for scholars and researchers of security studies, defence studies, international politics, and diplomacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[Matlock’s] account of Reagan’s achievement as the nation’s diplomat in chief is a public service.”—The New York Times Book Review “Engrossing . . . authoritative . . . a detailed and reliable narrative that future historians will be able to draw on to illuminate one of the most dramatic periods in modern history.”—Los Angeles Times Book Review In Reagan and Gorbachev, Jack F. Matlock, Jr., a former U.S. ambassador to the U.S.S.R. and principal adviser to Ronald Reagan on Soviet and European affairs, gives an eyewitness account of how the Cold War ended. Working from his own papers, recent interviews with major figures, and unparalleled access to the best and latest sources, Matlock offers an insider’s perspective on a diplomatic campaign far more sophisticated than previously thought, waged by two leaders of surpassing vision. Matlock details how Reagan privately pursued improved U.S.-U.S.S.R. relations even while engaging in public saber rattling. When Gorbachev assumed leadership, however, Reagan and his advisers found a willing partner in peace. Matlock shows how both leaders took risks that yielded great rewards and offers unprecedented insight into the often cordial working relationship between Reagan and Gorbachev. Both epic and intimate, Reagan and Gorbachev will be the standard reference on the end of the Cold War, a work that is critical to our understanding of the present and the past.

Book The Gorbachev Regime

Download or read book The Gorbachev Regime written by Hiroshi Kimura and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early days of Gorbachev's rise to power in the Soviet Union, an international group of U.S. and Japanese authorities probed the issues and forces that shaped a mammoth struggle within the Soviet Union. This book examines Gorbachev's reforms--the extent of their dramatic changes and the sobering evidence of their limits. The contributors' assessments range from wonder at the new atmosphere and expressive possibilities, to recognition of the reforms' reversibility, increasing difficulty, and the long road ahead. This is a fascinating contemporary review of factors that led to the demise of the Soviet Union only a few years later."Perestroika," the transformation of Soviet society and economic relations, epitomized Gorbachev's remedy for the ailing Soviet economy, which developed into a redefinition of Soviet socialism. Gorbachev emphasized that the success of reform depended not only on the technology and money, but also to succeed the reforms must overcome Stalin's legacy of bureaucratic centralism and enlist the creative energies of the Soviet people. This volume explains why the strength and nature of the reform coalition and anti-reform opposition, the limits and prospects of reform, and the compatibility of decentralizing reforms within the centralized one-party Soviet system and the implications of reforms for Soviet relations with the rest of the world.
