Book excerpt: “Tyler Evans was a beloved best friend, grandson, mentor, and (almost) husband.” “Tyler Evans was a young Black man killed by a police officer.” Goodnight, Tyler is the ghost-love story of Tyler Evans, a dead Black man who wants to be remembered for who he was rather than how he died. Only able to speak with his childhood best friend, Davis, Tyler demands his “legacy” be protected. He wants to make peace before he leaves behind Chelsea, his fiancée; Drew, his college buddy; and his grandmother, Fannie (all of whom consider themselves Tyler’s “favorite”). When Shana, a local college student, shows up at the house with an old jacket of his, Tyler quickly loses control over the narrative of his life. His loved ones fight over his affection, his best friend spirals into deep denial, his student doesn’t understand why he hangs around so many white people. Now left behind, these five people struggle to learn how to love each other. In a story about loss, intimacy, fear, and white supremacy, Tyler comes face-to-face with the reality of whose grief matters and whose lives matter most.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preface This story is about the tribulations experienced by a typical American family during a one year period. As is often the case, the root cause for the Flynn familys conflict was the sin of passion. Two questions plead for answers. Does a typical family actually exist? By definition, typical means: Conforming to the essential features of a species, group, and class, pattern of action or behavior. Therefore, we can recognize similarities between families but each is atypical because of the unique personalities in each family, and also the diverse circumstances in which they live. We can further assume that no two people will react precisely the same to a given stimulus. A corollary question is: Can a truly unique event occur? By definition, unique means: Being the only one of its kind. A debater could claim uniqueness for any given event because circumstances were slightly different from all similar preceding events, or because the people who participated were unique. After considering those moot questions and counterpoints, one can assume there is nothing new under the sun. Every thought or action that man can initiate has probably occurred sometime during the history of mankind, with only minor circumstantial and personality differences. Therefore, no thought, event or action in an overall sense is totally unique. Conversely, every thought or action can claim uniqueness because of the uniqueness of individuals and their varied reactions to the same stimulus. It is claimed that no two snowflakes are identical, thus possessing uniqueness. Cannot the same be claimed by people? The foregoing is a caveat that actions of the Flynn family in this novel are both typical and atypical as they deal with happenstances that seemingly take control of their fates. Bizarre behavior and highly unusual situations create an intriguing year for the Flynns, with unexpected twists and surprises that border on being unique by any definition. This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places and incidents either are the product of the authors imagination or are used fictitiously for plot enhancement and reality. Resemblance to actual person, living or dead, events, or locales is entirely coincidental

Book Narcissism Melancholia and the Subject of Community

Download or read book Narcissism Melancholia and the Subject of Community written by Barry Sheils and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the work of scholars and writer-practitioners of psychoanalysis to consider the legacy of two of Sigmund Freud's most important metapsychological papers: 'On Narcissism: An Introduction' (1914) and 'Mourning and Melancholia' (1917 [1915]). These twin papers, conceived in the context of unprecedented social and political turmoil, mark a point in Freud’s metapsychological project wherein the themes of loss and of psychic violence were becoming incontrovertible facts in the story of subject formation. Taking as their concern the difficulty of setting apart the ‘inner’ and the ‘outer’ worlds, as well as the difficulty of preserving an image of the coherently boundaried subject, the psychoanalytic frameworks of narcissism and melancholia provide the background coordinates for the volume’s contributors to analyse contemporary subjectivities in new psychosocial contexts. This collection will be of great interest to all scholars and practitioners of psychoanalysis and the psychotherapies, social and cultural theory, gender and sexuality studies, politics, and psychosocial studies.

She’s always lived at home, and she’s not able to truly research the way she needs to, so she calls a matchmaker whose specialty is introducing people at the altar. She’s convinced that a marriage of convenience is the only way for her to be truly happy. Novel has read enough romance novels to know she belongs with a tall, dark, and handsome man who is just waiting for her to complete his life. Tyler Carrington is doing his best to raise three daughters on his own. When his ten-year-old starts asking questions that could be better answered by a woman, he decides it’s time to remarry—someone who won’t leave him with three little girls to raise on his own like his first wife did. He has no intention of falling in love with the woman he marries. The whole purpose of marrying is to get someone to be a mother to his girls, not to enjoy the companionship of a woman. Will the two be able to come together in the end? Or will Novel get the real-life wake-up call she needs?

Book Toward a Social Psychoanalysis

Download or read book Toward a Social Psychoanalysis written by Lynne Layton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frantz Fanon, Erich Fromm, Pierre Bourdieu, and Marie Langer are among those activists, clinicians, and academics who have called for a social psychoanalysis. For over thirty years, Lynne Layton has heeded this call and produced a body of work that examines unconscious process as it operates both in the social world and in the clinic. In this volume of Layton’s most important papers, she expands on earlier theorists’ ideas of social character by exploring how dominant ideologies and culturally mandated, hierarchical identity prescriptions are lived in individual and relational conflict. Through clinical and cultural examples, Layton describes how enactments of what she calls ‘normative unconscious processes’ reinforce cultural inequalities of race, sex, gender, and class both inside and outside the clinic, and at individual, interpersonal, and institutional levels. Clinicians, academics, and activists alike will find here a deeper understanding of the power of unconscious process, and are called on to envision and enact a progressive future in which vulnerability and interdependency are honored and systemic inequalities dismantled.
