Book The Good the Bad and the G lenists

Download or read book The Good the Bad and the G lenists written by Asli Aydintasbas and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Turkish government, the Gülenist movement is at the heart of the failed coup attempt of 15 July. Fethullah Gülen, the movement's leader is a former ally of the Turkish president and one of the country's most powerful and in uential forces. With the help of the Turkish government, the Gülen movement successfully created a deep state within the Turkish bureaucracy and persecuted political enemies in show trials in 2008-2013. The movement is opaque and secretive in the state bureaucracy. There is enough evidence linking followers of Gülen to the coup but evidence pointing to Fethullah Gülen himself remains scant. Turkey extradition request for Fethullah Gulen will continue to create a turbulence in Turkey relationship with Washington. For the US, this is a legal matter; for Ankara, a prerequisite for partnership. The Turkish government has embarked on a massive purge to "clean the state", involving tens of thousands of state employees, banks, and companies. In its quest to protect Turkish democracy by purging Gülenists, the Turkish government needs to make sure it does not destroy the frail democracy it is trying to save.

Book July 15 Coup Attempt In Turkey

Download or read book July 15 Coup Attempt In Turkey written by Muhittin Ataman and published by SET Vakfı İktisadi İşletmesi. This book was released on with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turkey’s democracy has historically suffered from continuous coup attempts which aimed directly to overthrow the elected governments of the time. At least four successful coups have occurred in a period of 50 years and in July 15 2016 the latest attempt was executed. However, unlike the previous coups, the plotters failed to achieve their goals on the night of July 15, resulting in a triumph for Turkish unity and democracy. As such, the July 15 coup attempt can be considered as an example per se of people power which is worth studying. July 15 Coup Attempt in Turkey: Context, Causes and Consequences presents different perspectives focusing on political, economic, sociological and psychological aspects of the factors leading up to, the events during and aftermath of this historic date. Academicians and journalists have aimed to examine in detail the coup attempt and to present an accurate account of July 15. History and current events are analyzed through an academic perspective, creating a fuller picture to better understand this most recent attempt to compromise the will of the Turkish people. Book Turkey s July 15th Coup

Download or read book Turkey s July 15th Coup written by M. Hakan Yavuz and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "On July 15, 2016, a faction of the Turkish military tried to overthrow the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The attempt failed. The Turkish government blamed the attempted coup on Gülenists, followers of an Islamist movement led by Fethullah Gülen, who had helped Erdoğan and his AK Party get elected and bring an ostensibly 'soft' version of Islam into the secular Turkish government. In alliance with the AK Party, Gülenists over time became widely represented in various government institutions, including the military and police. This volume focuses on the Gülen Movement and its possible role in the failed coup, providing historical and sociopolitical context for what may have led to this conflict. Editors Yavuz and Balcı were among the first to study the movement from its beginning. They and other contributors have spent time in Turkey, Central Asia, and the Balkans examining various dimensions of Gülenist activity as the movement became a major economic and educational force in Turkey and elsewhere. Startled by the 2016 coup attempt, a group of scholars who had studied the Gülenists came together to discuss how and why the once-restrained movement became belligerent opponents of Erdoğan's government. This book is a product of their exchanges and it addresses questions such as: what did researchers fail to see in their earlier studies and how will this major disruption in Turkey affect the future of the movement?"--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A photo frame can sometimes loudly shout out the truth that hundreds of striking words may have difficulty in elucidating. As AST, we wanted to utilize the power of images to demonstrate the violations of rights that we have also tried to announce with reports and special studies. This book in your hand focuses on people from all walks of life who have been subjected to the ruthless persecution of the regime in Turkey during the last decade. Especially after the coup attempt of 15 July 2016, it is a reality that many people, who have never been involved in violence in their lives, have been subjected to monstrous pressure and discrimination just because of their social affiliations. The state apparatus, which has been rapidly evolving towards a one-party dictatorship, overturned all the rules of law in the ensuing period, shelved the constitutional rights and decriminalized legal acts that could never be considered a crime within the framework of universal principles, and even made a blatant attempt to retroactively exploit these newly-defined crimes to sentence people. As part of the mass cultural genocide perpetrated against the members of the Gülen Movement, also known as Hizmet: * Investigations were launched against more than 1.5 million people for terrorism allegations, * 300,000 people were detained, * More than 100,000 people were arrested. * 234,419 passports revoked, * More than 17,000 women were arrested, * Nearly 900 babies had to grow up in prison with their mothers. * Hundreds of thousands were laid off from their jobs, * Properties of thousands of people were forcibly confiscated. As AST, we wanted to record the intense oppression and persecution and to demonstrate the unlawful and anti-democratic practices of the political regime in Turkey and make a note of history with 159 photographs, some of which could be the symbols of this period. For example, among many others, the photos featured Zabit Kişi, who was tortured for 108 days and lost 30 kilos due to intense torments; Bilal Konakçı, a bomb disposal expert, who was sent to prison on account of the “membership in a terrorist organization” years after he became blind and had a 98-percent disability when a bomb exploded while he was trying to defuse it; or Ms. Hacer, whose hospital room door was well guarded by a police team that was there to detain her soon after she gave birth. We were unable to demonstrate all the atrocities due to the physical limitations of this book. Yet the book will achieve its purpose if it can interpret the sufferings of the innocent masses, albeit with a weak voice.

Book The Dubious Case of a Failed Coup

Download or read book The Dubious Case of a Failed Coup written by Feride Çiçekoğlu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an attempt to contextualise the coup attempt of 15 July 2016 in Turkey, within the framework of militarism and masculinities. The immediate aftermath of the 15 July in Turkey witnessed confusion, contestation and negotiation among different narratives, until a hegemonic version was superimposed on the collective memory as part of official history building. This project is an attempt to bring a fresh and critical perspective by compiling together analyses from various disciplines of political science, media and film studies, literature, sociology and cultural studies. Several chapters of this volume delineate the paradox of “victorious militarism,” meaning that despite the failure of the coup, its aftermath has been shaped by a new wave of state-sponsored gendered militarism, with the establishment of a regime of “state of emergency.”

Download or read book Disinformation written by Filiz Barın Akman and published by Kopernik Incorporated. This book was released on 2018 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the disinformation on Turkeys failed coup attempt in July 2016. The night of 15 July 2016 was long for Turkey. A military coup was in action. Some soldiers -- also known as FETÖ terrorists -- declared a military takeover on national TV, holding the trembling anchorwoman at gun point while tanks rolled in the streets, bulldozing cars and civilians alike, helicopters rained down bullets on unsuspecting protestors; access to the Bosporus Bridge was blocked, fighter jets began to fly very low, Turkish Parliament was bombed with impunity. With the dawn, it became apparent the perpetrators of the nights bloody coup attempt had destroyed many government buildings and killed some 250 people and wounded more than 2000. Turks unprecedented bravery and sacrifice in defense of democracy, freedom, and country against a military intervention was an exemplary act of civil defense, but it is seldom recognized or appreciated as such in the mainstream Western media.

Book An Uncertain Ally

Download or read book An Uncertain Ally written by David L. Phillips and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the rule of Recep Tayyip Erdogan Turkey has descended into a dictatorship, promotes the Islamist agenda, abuses human rights, limits freedom of expression in the press, and wages war against the Kurds. While Turkey has historically been important geopolitically, it has become an outlier in Europe and an uncertain ally of the United States. An Uncertain Ally is a straightforward indictment of Erdogan. Drawing on inside sources in his Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the police, the book reveals corruption and money laundering schemes that benefitted Erdogan, his cronies, and family members. Erdogan has polarized Turkish society and created conditions that led to the coup attempt of July 2016. He has also deepened divisions by accusing Fethullah Gulen, an Islamic teacher in Pennsylvania, of establishing a parallel state and masterminding the coup attempt. Erdogan has seized on the failed coup to justify a witch hunt, arresting thousands and ordering the wholesale dismissal of alleged coup sympathizers. Rather than foster reconciliation, he pursued vendettas and turned Turkey into a gulag. An Uncertain Ally exposes Turkey’s ties to jihadists in Syria and the Islamic State, questioning its suitability as a NATO member. Under Erdogan, Turkey faces a dark future that poses a danger to the region and internationally.

Book A Genocide in the Making

Download or read book A Genocide in the Making written by Bulent Kenes and published by Blue Dome Press. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Turkish government under the Erdoğan regime is undertaking a brutal crackdown against the participants of a civic group, namely the Gülen movement, also known as the Hizmet (service) movement, with the deliberate intention of destroying this social group, in whole or in part. In this extensive research, Dr. Keneş argues that this crackdown is filled with violations that may be classified at the very least as crimes against humanity and could very well be the harbinger of what comes next in terms of a full-scale genocide to exterminate thousands of innocent people. Keneş exemplifies many of these crimes and scales them against the genocide criteria according to definitions and norms accepted by United Nations and field experts. Given that the international community has historically downplayed the early signs of genocidal acts and thus failed to prevent such crimes many times before, it is necessary to be on the alert before the Erdoğan regime goes that far. A Genocide in the Making? is a unique volume that loudly cries out to the world this highly probable risk before it is too late.

Book Conspiracy Theory in Turkey

Download or read book Conspiracy Theory in Turkey written by Julian de Medeiros and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Turkey is witnessing an era of political upheaval. From the Gezi protests in 2013 to the attempted military coup of 2016, the concept of 'post-truth' plays a significant role in Turkish politics today. In the chaos of conspiracy theories, hidden enemies and post-coup purges, the unreal merges with the real, fuelling political repression and anti-government sentiment alike. Julian de Medeiros here analyses the many unfolding challenges of Erdogan's New Turkey, and shows how a fixedly Turkish-style of 'post-truth' has taken root. Examining the relationship between conspiracy theory and 'post-truth', this book sheds light on the strategies of political paranoia that threaten to undermine the success of Turkey's democratic model. De Medeiros argues that both the Gezi protests and the failed coup attempt need to be considered alongside the emerging anti-democratic and conspiratorial tendencies of an increasingly authoritarian Turkish government. As Turkish democracy continues to evolve with breath-taking speed and unpredictable outcomes, de Medeiros shows how the rise of paranoid politics in Turkey constitutes part of a global trend towards post-truth narratives. He situates Turkish democracy as subject to a global resurgence of strongman leadership and antagonistic populism. Conspiracy Theory in Turkey presents the very first critical account of the Turkish model of a 'post-truth politics'. Through a counter-intuitive analysis of conspiracy theory and paranoid politics the book disentangles the real from the unreal and chronicles the emergence of post-truth in Turkey today."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Book The G len Movement in Africa

Download or read book The G len Movement in Africa written by Federico Donelli and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2005, Turkey's relations with Africa have demonstrated a growing dynamism. This development was accompanied by greater diplomatic activism both bilaterally and multilaterally. Proactive Turkish diplomacy was rewarded in 2008, when, largely thanks to the votes of African countries, Turkey won a seat on the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member. This development was the outcome of a meticulous trust-building policy characterized by the simultaneous commitment of governmental and nongovernmental actors. Among the latter, Hizmet, better known as the Gülen movement--an Islamic transnational religious and social organization that has developed a multi-sectoral network in Turkey and abroad--played a pivotal role in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Between 2003 and 2014, it has held a special place in the formulation and implementation of Turkey's public diplomacy in Africa, above all in the education sector, by means of a network of several schools. For many years, Turkey has taken advantage of that network, using it to achieve many political and economic gains. However, after the failed coup attempt of July 15, 2016, which, according to Ankara, was orchestrated by the movement, Africa became a further theater of internecine fighting.

Book excerpt: The momentous event of Turkey's failed coup d'état of 15 July 2016 and its aftermath challenges us to ask if the coup was the cause of Turkey's present crisis, or simply an accelerant of trends already in motion, and thus a catalyst for the realization of Erdoğan's latent authoritarian impulses.

This book was released on 2023-01-07 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Turkish President declared in an infamous speech that “Old Turkey no longer exists. This Turkey is new Turkey”, the story of Turkish authoritarianism had once and for all taken on a new character. Since July of 2016, the Turkish government has improperly imprisoned 160,000+homemakers, teachers, NGO workers, academics, judges, prosecutors and journalists. Once upon a time, the Republic of Turkey was lauded by insiders and outsiders for constituting a powerful model for democratization. In New Turkey, however, silence against the regime’s draconian laws, mass imprisonment, and frequent violations of universal human rights has become the norm. In a regime which ranks as the worst upholder of the rule-of law including Eastern Europe & Central Asia, 200+ media outlets have been shut down and 308 journalists and numerous human rights defenders, politicians, including Ilhan Isbilen, Hidayet Karaca, Buşra Erdal, Selahattin Demirtaş and Osman Kavala are held as political prisoners of the state. As a prominent journalist and recipient of international awards, Ahmet Altan was among the political prisoners who resist the regime’s unlawfulness. He was jailed for five years as a result of the crackdown on freedom of expression in Turkey. We are a group of lawyers, judges, academics, journalists, and hundreds of activists who cherish democratic ideals and universal human rights. We are prisoners of conscience wanted by the Erdogan’s regime, relatives of political prisoners, and victims who have lost their jobs, property and even family members to the current administration which has been described as a Mafia State. We are the Advocates of Silenced Turkey. We, the Advocates, have made it our mission to champion the rights of Silenced Turkey until universal human rights and democratic governance are established and sustained as the utmost priorities of the Republic of Turkey. In this regard, we have been the voice of voiceless people of Turkey by means of more than 200 human rights projects. We have shared the stories of the victims of grave human rights violations and persecution in Turkey through the personal belongings of them in The Social Genocide exhibition held in over 4 locations so far. We are also sharing the lives and experiences of persecuted people of Turkey with books. Among those books are the life stories of Gokhan Acikkollu and Halime Gulsu who died of torture in during incarceration in Turkey’s jails. In order to shed light on hideous assaults and rights violations in jails that women face, we have recently conducted a survey which will be reported to international entities and presented in conferences. Furthermore, as AST, we have been gathering prominent human rights experts to only discuss the human rights issues but also recommend solutions at our signature event, the Freedom Convention. For more work we do as human rights defenders please see this report closely. Thank you for all the support you do to help us achieve our humanity goals!
