Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small and medium-sized enterprises can serve as promising cradles for challenging ideas and pioneering initiatives. That is exactly what is required in order to make progress towards sustainable levels and patterns of production and consumption. Of all the continents of the world, Europe is most likely to lead the way towards a more sustainable relation with the environment. Having been the cradle of the industrialized world as we know it today, Europe again will lead the way in the journey of discovery to sustainable industrial practice, that is, if suitable conditions exist, and engaged and motivated entrepeneurs take the challenge and the role of the pioneer. Essential to these conditions is a set of values regarding the availability and properties of resources, the functioning of products and the impact upon the environment, now and well into the future, in Europe as well as globally. Furthermore, imagination, infor mation and encouragement will be essential. This manual provides ideas, tools, examples and guidance for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that wish to develop products with the environment and the future in mind. It addresses product development and design with consideration for the whole life cycle of the product. This cycle is a process ranging from the identification and formulation of a need at the early stage of product development to the disposal of the product, after repeated usage, at the end of its life. A particular focus has been given to principles and criteria in the design of complex products.

Book The Six Sigma Manual for Small and Medium Businesses

Download or read book The Six Sigma Manual for Small and Medium Businesses written by Craig Baird and published by Atlantic Publishing Company. This book was released on 2009 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six Sigma is a set of practices used to systematically improve processes by eliminating defects, which is any nonconformity of a product or service to its specification. To be Six Sigma compliant, a company must produce no more than 3.4 defects per one million products. If this can be achieved, a company has the potential to save billions of dollars, just as Motorola did. The global communications company reported over $17 billion in savings in a recent yearly report, and over the past decade, companies like Bank of America, Caterpillar, Honeywell International, Raytheon, Merrill Lynch, and General Electric have implemented the practice. However, it is much more difficult to implement Six Sigma in small and medium-sized businesses, but it is becoming increasingly important to do so, as larger companies now require their supply bases to be Six Sigma compliant. In The Six Sigma Manual for Small and Medium Businesses, you will learn about the two main methodologies involved with Six Sigma, DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) and DMADV (Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Verify), as well as various other methodologies advocated by companies around the world, including DCCDI, CDOC, DCDOV, DMADOV, DMEDI, and IDOV. You will also learn about black, green, and yellow belts; the key roles for successful implementation; cost savings; training; responsibilities; and terms specific to Six Sigma. In addition, you will learn how to avoid the common pitfalls and traps found during implementation, how to understand the statistical tools and problem solving techniques, and how to become certified. Also included are detailed examples, diagrams, and practical exercises to help you master the concepts of Six Sigma. Ultimately, you will discover how to improve the quality of your processes and products while increasing customer satisfaction and saving billions of dollars. The Six Sigma Manual for Small and Medium Businesses is for the company that has already implemented the process, an organization who may be considering it, students who want to learn it to make themselves more marketable, and business professionals who need a refresher course. Whatever your reason for reading this book you will find practical advice and tips for successfully learning about and implementing Six Sigma. Book Principles of Sustainable Development Volume I

Download or read book Principles of Sustainable Development Volume I written by Giancarlo Barbiroli and published by EOLSS Publications. This book was released on 2009-10-20 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Sustainable Development is the component of Encyclopedia of Development and Economic Sciences in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Sustainable Development is a term of differing definitions. Standing alone, the term is abstract and ambiguous. The meaning most often cited is that adopted by the World Commission on Environment and Development: meeting today’s true needs and opportunities without jeopardizing the integrity of the planetary life-support base – the environment – and diminishing its ability to provide for needs, opportunities, and quality of life in the future. This definition may serve as a general principle, but for a guide to action its components sustainability and development must be given substance: what is to be sustained and what developed? Is development essentially economic or material growth, and is sustainability mostly a means to keep economic growth growing? Consequently, should development represent means toward ecologically sustainable ends? The concept of ecological sustainability has been advanced as a restriction on economic development. It follows therefore that principles of sustainable development depend upon how the term is understood and how it is put into practice. Even so the definition of the World Commission on Environment and Development, given the adequate definition of variable needs, provides the most reliable principle for testing the qualitative and ecological sustainability of development proposals. The Theme on Principles of Sustainable Development, in three volumes, deals with the diversity of points of view on this complex subject. These three volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs.
