Book Goodbye Berlin

Download or read book Goodbye Berlin written by Margaret M. Dunlop and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2016-11-20 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 24th of March, 1939, was a poignant day for twelve-year-old Gerald Wiener. He was on a train pulling out of Berlin and he was on his way to the UK to escape persecution in Nazi Germany. He was one of the thousands of unaccompanied children saved by the Kindertransport. Looked after by two sisters in Oxford, his abilities as a scholar became apparent and from an early age he was set on the road to academic achievement. There followed a distinguished career as a research scientist in Edinburgh, where he made a genetic discovery that received international recognition. His research department was a centre of excellence and members of his team went on to make an astonishing breakthrough in genetics, the cloning of Dolly the sheep. During his career Gerald was also in demand to assist agricultural development in China, India, the secretive North Korea and many other countries, and his trips during these years are full of incident and fascinating human and social insights. It was while he was on a postdoctoral fellowship in the USA that he discovered he had a large family in California. He had known nothing of them as his mother and father had parted when he was only two years old. His aunt and stepmother gave him compelling accounts of their escapes from Hitler, via Shanghai, and life under the Japanese during the War. Their stories, and that of Gerald himself, are amazing tales of resilience and triumph over adversity. This book shows how one man's life and achievements mirror the great events of the second half of the twentieth century and the opening years of the new millennium.

In March 1944 the Jews of Tolcsva were sent to the Satoraljaujhely ghetto; soon after, Gossman and her brother fled and returned to their parents in Presov, only to be resettled the next day in Nitra, western Slovakia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a great lie between members of a middle class family: the Daniels. The direction of their lives changed dramatically as a result of a marriage and the birth of a child. The Danielss alcohol dependency, the Powells unhealthy influence, a priests spiritual failure, erodes the weak structure which apparently sustains the moral principles of our characters, when they fall into a vast web woven into disloyalty, revenge and lust. Overwhelmed by the devastating result of their acts, they realized, but not until much later, that they had been their only victims for wanting to control the lives of others with the sole purpose of satisfying their harmful intentions. Reduced to living in constant turbidity, they did not suspect that inner reconciliation and redemption were hidden from the beginning, behind love. Book excerpt: Berchtesgaden, Germany, is a beautiful place, set among the gentle meadow-clad hills rising to the sheer heights of bare Alpine peaks. It is here where an elderly woman arrives and recollects her past—and her peripheral role in a chapter of world history. She walks along a beaten path, which has come into being because so many tourists have ventured this way . . . to see something that exists only in her memory. In the summer of 1944, twenty-year-old Marlene is thrilled when her older, more glamorous cousin, Eva Braun, Adolph Hitler’s mistress, invites her to come to the Fuhrer’s Bavarian mountain retreat. Against her father’s wishes, Marlene accepts, and immediately sets forth to Berghof. There, while Hitler is away desperately trying to turn the tides of war, Marlene finds herself in a strange paradise, a world of opulence and imminent danger, of freedom and surveillance. The two women sneak off and skinny-dip in a nearby-lake, watch films in the Fuhrer’s private cinema, and flirt with the SS officers at the dinner table—one of whom will become Marlene’s first lover. Initially delighted by Eva’s attentions, Marlene later tries to understand the elusive connection between her cousin and the man she loves. In quiet defiance, she begins to commit her own acts of subversion, which include listening to BBC radio broadcasts, forbidden by the Fuhrer. But a clandestine mission of mercy will force her to question her allegiance to both her cousin and her country—and to face the chilling reality that exists outside her sheltered world. Based on the true experiences of Eva Braun’s cousin, Gertrude Weisker, who has shared her memories with Sibylle Knauss after more than fifty years of silence, Eva’s Cousin is a novel that illuminates the banality of the domestic face of evil. It casts a special light on the profound questions of innocence and complicity that still haunt much of the world today.
