Book Universalism and Particularism at Sodom and Gomorrah

Download or read book Universalism and Particularism at Sodom and Gomorrah written by Diana Lipton and published by Society of Biblical Lit. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reexamines the Sodom and Gomorrah narrative in Genesis 18–19, an ethically charged text that has significantly influenced views about homosexuality, stereotyping the other, the rewards and risks of hospitality, and the justice owed to outsiders. Its twelve essays, reflecting their authors’ considerable geographical, religious, methodological, and academic diversity, explore this troubling text through the lens of universalism and particularism. Biblical Sodom is read as the site of multiple borders—fluid, porous, and bi-directional—between similar and different, men and angels, men and women, fathers and daughters, insiders and outsiders, hosts and guests, residents and aliens, chosen and nonchosen, and people and God. Readers of these exegetically and theologically attentive essays published in memory of Ron Pirson will experience a rare sense of an ancient text being read in and for the modern world. The contributors are Calum Carmichael, Diana Lipton, William John Lyons, Nathan MacDonald, Amira Meir, Yitzhak (Itzik) Peleg, T. A. Perry, Ron Pirson, Jonathan D. Safren, Megan Warner, Harlan J. Wechsler, and Ellen J. van Wolde.

Book Life in Christ

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Robert West
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2015-09-29

  • Pages : 705 pages

Download or read book Life in Christ written by William Robert West and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you believe about souls? There are many very different doctrines taught in the world today concerning souls that are believed to be in all humans. By most a soul is believed to be something that is wholly apart from the person a soul is in; that a soul is something that is that is believed to be complete in its self without the person; it will live after the person it is in is dead; it is believed that a soul will exist forever without the person; it will never be dead; therefore, a soul cannot be resurrected from the dead. It is believed that a soul must live someplace forever, and it will live either in Heaven or Hell even if there is no resurrection. The doctrine of unconditional immortality of a deathless soul being in a person, and that soul leaving that person at the death of the person makes it impossible for Christ to have give His life to save that soul from death; if a soul had immortality it would already have life and could never not have life; all Christ could do is give it a reward or punish it.

Book Christianity and the Problem of Evil

Download or read book Christianity and the Problem of Evil written by Larry Lacy and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the problem of evil that the Christian faith faces. Is the Christian faith (which affirms that there exists a God who is omniscient, omnipotent, and perfectly good) improbable, given the horrendous evils encountered by some in this life; and is the Christian faith improbable, given the evils the Christian faith affirms for some in the age to come--eternal judgment and eternal punishment? Some reflective persons see the problem of these eschatological evils as the most serious challenge to the reasonableness of the Christian faith. I argue that once we become clear about what the New Testament teaches about each of these eschatological evils, a way is opened up to show that it is not improbable for us that each of these teachings of the New Testament is fully consistent with the perfect goodness of God. I then argue that the doctrines of eternal judgment and eternal punishment, properly understood, open up an important resource for dealing with the problem that the grave evils of this life create for the Christian doctrine of the omniscience, omnipotence, and perfect goodness of God.

A groundbreaking, unprecedented bestseller in Italy, Roberto Saviano's insider account traces the decline of the city of Naples under the rule of the Camorra, an organized crime network more powerful and violent than the Mafia. The Camorra is an elaborate, international system dealing in drugs, high fashion, construction, and toxic waste, and its influence has entirely transformed life in Campania, the province surrounding Naples. Since seeing his first murder victim, at thirteen, Roberto Saviano has watched the changes in his home city. For Gomorrah, he disappeared into the Camorra and witnessed up close the drug cartel's audacious, sophisticated, and far-reaching corruption that has paralyzed his home city and introduced the world to a new breed of organized crime.

Book excerpt: Peter’s second letter is about growing in Christ amid false teaching so that Christ’s character will be reflected in our lives. Peter begins by explaining true knowledge of God. It is a saving, growing, fruitful, assured and remembered knowledge. The source of this true knowledge of God is Scripture. Scripture comes from God. Men spoke from God carried along by the Holy Spirit. Peter next contrasts false knowledge of God with true knowledge of God. There are false teachers among the churches Peter addresses, whose precursors are the false prophets of the Old Testament. Arrogance, sensuality, and emptiness characterize these false teachers. They not only deny the truth but also live immoral lives. False knowledge of God leads nowhere but to God’s condemnation and to eternal death. Peter finally writes of practical knowledge of God. He recalls the predictions of the prophets and the commandment of their Lord and Saviour through the apostles. Practical knowledge of God produces godly living, assures that God fulfils all his promises in Scripture, and confirms growth in grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. All of this is possible through Scripture. Let’s together see how Peter explains in detail how to grow in Christ amid false teaching.
