Book The Archeology of the New Testament

Download or read book The Archeology of the New Testament written by Jack Finegan and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Archeology of the New Testament is the authoritative illustrated account of what is presently known about the chief sites and monuments connected with the life of Jesus and the history of the early church. To follow the order of the New Testament, it first investigates sites connected with John the Baptist and then proceeds to Bethlehem and Nazareth, Samaria and Galilee, Jerash, Caesarea, Jericho, the Mount of Olives, Jerusalem, and Emmaus. Each site is illustrated, and the accompanying text, numbered to facilitate cross-reference, contains a bibliography. This edition has been completely revised to reflect the most recent scholarship and excavations, and it contains many new entries. Anyone concerned with the historical, geographical, and cultural background of the New Testament will want to study this classic work as it retraces the steps of Jesus. "The definitive handbook. Finegan's comprehensive treatment of almost every problem in the field of New Testament archeology as well as his judicious evaluation of the evidence makes this book indispensable to every serious student of the Bible."--The New York Times Book Review Originally published in 1993. Download or read book The Passion of Our Lord written by Erich Kiehl and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-01-14 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though commentaries on the Gospels abound, preachers and Bible students have few resources that draw on all four Gospels to tell the story of Christ's final week of ministry. Up-to-date and informative, 'The Passion of Our Lord' lets each Gospel writer speak in his inspired account of Jesus' passion. Substantial background material informs the author's study, and he weaves into his text copious insights from historical and archaeological sources. He also takes into account Jewish messianic expectations, showing how they, as well as Roman and Jewish laws, shaped events that fateful week. Helpful maps, diagrams, and illustrations support the author's perceptive exposition. Research surrounding the final week of Christ's ministry would not be complete without consulting 'The Passion of Our Lord'.

Book Senses Cognition and Ritual Experience in the Roman World

Download or read book Senses Cognition and Ritual Experience in the Roman World written by Blanka Misic and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-25 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do the senses shape the way we perceive, understand, and remember ritual experiences? This book applies cognitive and sensory approaches to Roman rituals, reconnecting readers with religious experiences as members of an embodied audience. These approaches allow us to move beyond the literate elites to examine broader audiences of diverse individuals, who experienced rituals as participants and/or performers. Case studies of ritual experiences from a variety of places, spaces, and contexts across the Roman world, including polytheistic and Christian rituals, state rituals, private rituals, performances, and processions, demonstrate the dynamic and broad-scale application that cognitive approaches offer for ancient religion, paving the way for future interdisciplinary engagement. Book Jerusalem The Holy Sepulchre

Download or read book Jerusalem The Holy Sepulchre written by Grazia Tucci and published by Altralinea Edizioni . This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerusalem is situated in a highly seismic zone, and in the past has been the theatre of disastrous earthquakes. One of these was the 1927 quake, which seriously damaged the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre. A study of the city of Jerusalem has revealed a cyclical pattern of repeated seismic events, every 100 years or so. The desire to avert a danger, foretold in advance, lay behind the project described in this volume. In 2006 the three Major Communities of the Holy Sepulchre invited a research team from Florence University. Architects, surveyors, geologists and structural engineers conducted the investigations, in a highly interdisciplinary collaboration. It was an extraordinary opportunity to draw up a complete survey, using new technology. This resulted in a three-dimensional digital model of the structural situation on that date: a powerful, exhaustive tool for the continuation of further research, and documentation, in the future.
