Book Hammer Film Scores and the Musical Avant Garde

Download or read book Hammer Film Scores and the Musical Avant Garde written by David Huckvale and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music in film is often dismissed as having little cultural significance. While Hammer Film Productions is famous for such classic films as Dracula and The Curse of Frankenstein, few observers have noted the innovative music that Hammer distinctively incorporated into its horror films. This book tells how Hammer commissioned composers at the cutting edge of European musical modernism to write their movie scores, introducing the avant-garde into popular culture via the enormously successful venue of horror film. Each chapter addresses a specific category of the avant-garde musical movement. According to these categories, chapters elaborate upon the visionary composers who made the horror film soundtrack a melting pot of opposing musical cultures.

Book excerpt: An illustrated business fable that gives you the faith, courage and confidence to win in today's tough economic climate Fear and uncertainty are staples of daily life in today's struggling economy. However, you have more control than you think you do and how you handle adversity is your choice-and the only choice that matters. In fact, study history and you'll find that a lot of people and organizations made a name for themselves and grew their businesses during recessions and downturns. These successful people and organizations all shared similar characteristics and took similar actions to thrive while others merely tried to survive. You can do the same. In The Shark and the Goldfish, Jon Gordon shares an inspiring fable about Gordy, a pampered goldfish who gets swept out to sea. Desperate for food, Gordy meets a kind shark who teaches him the ultimate lesson-Goldfish wait to be fed. Sharks go find food. Gordy also learns that the difference between a full and empty stomach is our faith, beliefs and actions. In the face of adversity and lean times, this is a business fable that reinforces a proven truth: You can't control the events in your life. But you can control how you respond and in turn this determines the outcome. A business fable that teaches valuable lessons on the importance of working hard, maintaining a locus of control and focusing on positive choices instead of negative voices, Written by Jon Gordon, bestselling author of The Energy Bus and The No Complaining Rule Reveals how change is inevitable-but that you can make it your friend or foe. Book Stories for Animals

Download or read book Stories for Animals written by I. H. Smythe and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-03-16 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are literally millions of books written about animals, but only two books written specifically for animals and this is one of them.* Originally these stories were published on the wind as an olfactory collection for dogs, but when they soared to #1 on the bestseller lists, other creatures demanded versions for themselves. Thus they were published with vegetable based inks for the edification of rabbits and slugs; converted into a vigorous waggle dance for honeybees; transcribed into whale songs, bird calls, cricket chirps, and elephant trumpets; and, lastly, translated into cow pies for the satisfaction of dung beetles and houseflies. All of these animals enjoyed reading about phobic cats, skeptical basset hounds, heroic honeybees, tree-hugging slugs, and megalomaniacal mollusks but now, at long last, Stories for Animals is available to animals of all species including yours. * The other is Poetry for Animals, available at fine bookstores and from woodland creatures everywhere. Recommended for ages 11+ (77+ in dog years)

Download or read book Notes on Participatory Art written by Gustaf Almenberg and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-12-02 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are living in the Age of Participation. Social media are exploding, customer cooperation is sought in product development, and customer content is even built into media. But where is the art reflecting our times? Where are the artists making this kind of art? Who were their predecessors? In this book the author traces the roots of Participatory Art from Duchamp, Mondrian and Moholy-Nagy via less well known artists like Lygia Clark and Charlotte Posenenske as well as via better known artists like Joseph Beuys and yvind Fahlstrm to contemporary artists showing an interest in participation like Olafur Eliasson and Antony Gormley. Participation is the most important thing that has happened in art Gormley said in 2009. What, then, is Participatory Art? After around 40 years of practice the author tries to distill the essential principles in 10 suggestions for a Manifesto. Most central is its focus on the unfolding creative moment itself and on the creativity of the spectator.

Book Photographic Returns

  • Author : Shawn Michelle Smith
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2020-01-03
  • ISBN : 147800553X
  • Pages : 177 pages

Download or read book Photographic Returns written by Shawn Michelle Smith and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Photographic Returns Shawn Michelle Smith traces how historical moments of racial crisis come to be known photographically and how the past continues to inhabit, punctuate, and transform the present through the photographic medium in contemporary art. Smith engages photographs by Rashid Johnson, Sally Mann, Deborah Luster, Lorna Simpson, Jason Lazarus, Carrie Mae Weems, Taryn Simon, and Dawoud Bey, among others. Each of these artists turns to the past—whether by using nineteenth-century techniques to produce images or by re-creating iconic historic photographs—as a way to use history to negotiate the present and to call attention to the unfinished political project of racial justice in the United States. By interrogating their use of photography to recall, revise, and amplify the relationship between racial politics of the past and present, Smith locates a temporal recursivity that is intrinsic to photography, in which images return to haunt the viewer and prompt reflection on the present and an imagination of a more just future.

Book Marshall Plan Modernism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jaleh Mansoor
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2016-09-02
  • ISBN : 0822373688
  • Pages : 189 pages

Download or read book Marshall Plan Modernism written by Jaleh Mansoor and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on artwork by Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, and Piero Manzoni, Jaleh Mansoor demonstrates and reveals how abstract painting, especially the monochrome, broke with fascist-associated futurism and functioned as an index of social transition in postwar Italy. Mansoor refuses to read the singularly striking formal and procedural violence of Fontana's slit canvasses, Burri's burnt and exploded plastics, and Manzoni's "achromes" as metaphors of traumatic memories of World War II. Rather, she locates the motivation for this violence in the history of the medium of painting and in the economic history of postwar Italy. Reconfiguring the relationship between politics and aesthetics, Mansoor illuminates how the monochrome's reemergence reflected Fontana, Burri, and Manzoni's aesthetic and political critique of the Marshall Plan's economic warfare and growing American hegemony. It also anticipated the struggles in Italy's factories, classrooms, and streets that gave rise to Autonomia in the 1960s. Marshall Plan Modernism refigures our understanding of modernist painting as a project about labor and the geopolitics of postwar reconstruction during the Italian Miracle.
